Ed was the consumant professional in our preparation and delivery of the food for a party if 30. Every entree, appetizer and side item was way above our expectations. Highlights: honey chicken, tenderloin, spanakopita and strangely enough the shrimp was the best I've ever had in Dallas. No clue where it came from but it was lights out. For anybody wanting and needing a top notch caterer for your event, this is the only way to go.

Marc catered entrees for banquet for a student organization at UT Dallas. I changed the menu a couple of times and he was very patient and had no problems with it. It was my first time organizing an event like this, but Marc made it an easy, streamlined process. He gives the best deals per person I've seen yet! Not only was the food delicious and more than plentiful, but it was a pleasure working with Marc, and I look forward to working with him for future events. The entrees we ordered, the chicken parmesan and lemon chicken, were well-received by all guests. Highly recommend this caterer!

Luke did a great job catering a sit-down dinner for my daughter's bachelorette weekend. He responded to my initial inquiry promptly and was easy to communicate with via e-mail and text as we planned the menu. The girls wanted to float around the pool and enjoy a few adult beverages during the day, but wanted a restaurant-quality meal that evening without having to worry about dressing up or driving. Luke arrived promptly and served a great meal with a choice of lamb chops or filet mignon as the primary proteins. The meal included a sushi appetizer, salads & sides, and a yummy dessert of creme brulee. He cooked, cleaned, and rolled with the punches with this rowdy group of 8 ladies and they all had a great time and enjoyed the meal. We will definitely hire Luke again for other dinner parties at the house.

We ordered the smoked chicken quarters and bacon wrapped sirloin, mac n cheese, and cream of corn. The meal came with salad, dinner rolls, sweet/unsweetend tea, and plastic ware. The meal was amazing. Everyone raved about the food. The food was delivered on time even with the venue change due to bad weather. Very professional and excellent service. Highly recommend!!

Chef cassy served my engagement party for 15 people. We had her amazing bacon roll ups for appetizers. The ribeyes were served as each of my guest requested them and without any issues. The mango salsa on the salmon was delicious. She brought a server to help her, and he exceeded my expectations; he was super friendly and courteous. The meal was cooked at my house and she left everything just like she found it in the kitchen, very organized and clean. Overall I was very pleased with her service, and will definetly refer her to all my family and friends. I want her at my wedding!!

Chef Jared was awesome! We had a small dinner party for my husband's 40th, and the incredible surf & turf meal he served, including a scrumptious crab cake appetizer, was perfect! It was so good my husband said, "This is how we should celebrate birthdays from now on!" Also, noteworthy, our schedule the day of our dinner got all wonky, and he was super-flexible even with our last minute schedule changes. I really appreciated that. Thanks, Chef Jared, for making my husband's special day even more special.

Tiffany, John, Andrea and Sandra all arrived at appointed time ready to do the set up. They got right to work and began preparing the delicious food on site. The presentation of the menu items was amazing. The risers for the different appetizers was so professionally presented. Our guests were so impressed with the presentation and commented numerous times about how delicious the selections were. We had various options of heavy appetizers and had little to no leftovers. I cannot say enough good things about this company. I would use them again and again and highly recommend them to anyone. The menu selection was amazing. We had a varied selection of finger foods that were easy to eat. Overall this was a great experience and I would use them again.

Our experience with Chefs Like It Hot was extremely positive. Chef Tony went above and beyond to ensure our special wedding day met our every expectation. Our guests were very impressed with every aspect of the meal...from the appetizers to every dish of the main course. Chef Tony was also able to provide servers when we had to make changes from our original plan to serve buffet style, this was something that was unexpected and he made sure things went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend Chef Tony to provide your catering needs for your next event!

I've known Carolyn for many years, and in the past two years, have been lucky to taste her delicious and skilled cuisine. Among my favorites were the pistachio encrusted salmon and the tapenade appetizer. But I've also enjoyed her fabulous Caesar salad and flourless chocolate cake. Carolyn knows how to build a well rounded and coordinated menu that is both delicious and inviting. Carolyn is knowledgeable of health conscious food choices, has a broad repertoire of vegetarian specialities, and is very accommodating to picky palates. She's also quite sensitive to those who wish to avoid starchy white foods and knows appropriate alternatives. I hope to continue to enjoy Carolyn's mouth watering creations and would recommend her chef skills to anyone who loves to eat.

Their staff showed up at the agreed time to make sure everything was set up before my guests were to arrive. The food was soooooo delicious we were afraid we would run out. But we never did!!!! Overall, Spiced Lavender was very professional, punctual, and customer service oriented with delicious food that made my event go smooth and kept my guests happy.

Islanders was a fantastic addition to the wedding my team and I worked on last weekend. Carrie, the owner, worked collaboratively with both our team and the bride and groom to get great food at a great price. The meals were fresh and delicious - the guests really enjoyed them & the customer service they offered was great. If you're planning to have food trucks at your wedding they are a must!

Cari and the food were great. We hosted a special-occasion dinner party for 14. Cari brought 2 helpers, both of whom were professional and fun. We did 3 appetizers, salad, a pasta and meat main course, and cake. Cari was proactive in setting the menu, everything came off on time, guests loved the food and they cleaned up while we ate. I recommend Cari without reservation!

I used The Bite's catering services 2 weekends ago for my father in laws 70s birthday party. We were all so impressed with their food and quality of service. We chose their American Affairs Menu buffet style and it did not disappoint! We loved that Chef Evan through in our menu his mini spinach and cheese tarts. It was a wonderful little detail that made the party even more special. Him and his wife are a young vibrant team. Def will be using them again!

Roger was very professional and extremely easy to work with. I explained to him over the phone my expectations, and he had great recommendations. I am allergic to gluten and I was so impressed with his knowledge about gluten and great menu ideas. We ended up having the entire menu gluten free and not one guest complained. The food was amazing!! Every single person raved about the food. From the appetizer to main dish, it was ALL delicious! I highly recommend Soirée Chef Group.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
