My husband and I had our first session today with Gary. He is so intuitive down to earth and exceptionally intelligent. He really tuned into to our personalities and needs almost immediately. He's so amazingly perseptive. Sometimes I felt he was reading my mind. Obviously I know it's his experience but, we've been to two other counselors in the past ten years, and we recieved more out of one session with him then in 5 sessions with the last. He truly was a blessing sent from God. I was giving up and really not caring where my finger landed on some Google search last night. God had his hand in this one. I can't wait until our next session, and I don't believe anyone has ever really looked forward to their next marriage counseling session😂😉 Thank you Rev. Gary😘

I truly feel that one of the best decisions my fiance and I made together was to go through premarital counseling with Mr. and Mrs. Alexander. They were a blessing to us. They made us comfortable in each session. We were able to open up and talk about serious issues with the confidence that we were being guided by true experienced professionals. My fiance and I left feeling closer than we have ever felt before. We not only grew on a mental level but we also grew spiritually. I strongly recommend the Alexanders for anyone who is seeking premarital or marital counseling. We look forward to doing our follow up in 6 months after we are married and beyond. The Alexanders have become more than counselors, they are family.

Cressan has been an excellent counselor for my wife and me. We have seen her together and individually and with her help we have made it through some very difficult times that almost destroyed our marriage. We have been able to improve not only our marriage but our personal lives as well. Cressan has always been able to set me at ease and help me feel comfortable about opening up. She is a great listener and is always understanding and empathetic. I would highly recommend her.

My experience working with Jeana has been awesome. My favorite part about, A Safe Place to Heal, is knowing I'm walking into a safe atmosphere and I can be real with my therapist, where healing can take place. If you can't be real or open with your councilor, you won't be able to heal. Jeana is someone I can share anything with and let her in my world. Where I'm normally guarded and shut down, I trust Jeana and let her in with my thoughts, feelings and pain. Her office is an eviroment that is warm, welcoming and a place, I am allowed to express myself freely. I always enjoy and look forward to meeting with Jeana for a number of reasons. Jeana allows me to get real and raw in my appointments. I don't hold anything back when I talk with her mentally or emotionally. I love seating on her couch and knowing whatever I process and share with her, matters to her. Jeana makes it easy to connect with and relate to. Sometimes, when I meet with her, I don't even feel like I'm in a session with her. It feels like I'm talking with a very close trusted friend. Its so important to find a therapist, who is relational. I have been able to develop a great relationship working with Jeana. I appreciate her fresh approach, open mindedness and that she is so down to earth real. Jeana is professional, trustworthy, confident, caring, kind and dedicated to her patients. I highly recommend her and have found, A Safe Place to Heal, to be a great source for me to heal on my journey & help me in my life.

Paul is very knowledgeable and understanding. When my husband and I shared our issues, he listened with patience and could tell us the root of our problems. He was very straight to the point and his strategies worked fine for us. We are glad to have him as our marriage counselor.

Mr. Miller was great! He helped my husband and I in such a way that I could never repay. He was understanding in a way that made us understand each other. He has put hope in our family and has guided us in the direction we needed to be led. And his partner Kandace was also great! I loved speaking with her for the combined session. Such wonderful people and counselors, would recommend to anyone hands down!

I began seeing Todd a few years ago when my young adult daughter and I were trying to regain our formerly-close relationship. My parents had just died within 18 months of each other. I was severely depressed but functioning. Todd is a rare combination of attentive listener, supportive but willing to ask you the hard questions. So many counselors take your money and let you talk without ever challenging you to look at your life. Todd does this and got me through a difficult time. I came out the other side, a healthier and more content single woman. Besides that, he is very real and doesn't care for bull nor for pretentious people. I like him personally and am very, very great full for his help and guidance. I recommend him unreservedly to anyone who wants help and is ready to embrace change in their life. I no longer need him, but would love to see him again. He's a super person.

From the very first session with him, I knew it would be a positive experience, and I was right. Phil has a talent for asking thought provoking questions and had the ability to help me come to my own conclusions about what I truly wanted. He's a wonderful career counselor and helped me more than I could ever put into words.

I've known Penny as a colleague for 18 years and she is the epitome of professionalism combined with warmth, caring and expert guidance. Penny instantly makes every person she comes in contact with feel at ease and as if she's known them for years. I've seen her patients interact with her and it's clear that she has a gift that defies words. God has blessed her with a helping mind and heart that will change your life for the better. The real testimonial is seeing how clients track her down years later when they have a crisis they need help with; they don't reach out to someone new, they reach out to someone they trust. Penny is the counselor other counselors would go see in their time of need. Simply put, she's the best there is.

My husband and I were referred to Steven by our friends. Steven had helped their family during a difficult time and felt that he could help us as well. My husband was hesitant to start couples counseling and see ANY counselor but thankfully agreed to start weekly sessions once he talked with Steven over the phone. Steven is very easy to talk and you can tell he has been doing this for a very long time. He was able to connect with both my husband and I and help us see what areas we needed to work on in our relationship and helped us communicate more effectively. We liked Steven so much that we decided he would also be able to help our 15 year old son with his everyday struggles. My son has a really busy schedule with sports and school and Steven has always been flexible by offering Skype and phone sessions as needed. He has really helped my son overcome his anxieties and given him an outlet so he doesn't keep everything bottled up inside. Steven has been a lifesaver for my family and I highly recommend him!

About

There are three major differences between my approach of marriage counseling and many other qualified professionals. First of all, I am bilingual and bicultural, it allows me to understand a wider range of people and couples who do not consider themselves "the conventional couple". On the other hand, before I meet with the couples, they are requested to first take a 30-minute online questionnaire individually. Many couples found it tremendously helpful to learn about their strengths and growth areas during counseling. It also reduces the chances of misunderstandings of the counselor or making inaccurate assumptions about the marriage. Last but not least, I am theologically and psychologically trained while handling marital difficulties (e.g. conflict resolution, forgiveness and reconciliation, sexual intimacy, etc.) For more information about my biography or credentials, please visit www.KarisWong.com.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
