Rosalio was a pleasure to have work in my home. He was both professional and courteous. He contacted me immediately after I submitted the request for work (around 8:30am). I needed the job finished the same day and Rosalio said that was no problem. I came to my house (around 9:30am), worked for several hours (finished around noon), and was extremely polite. My 10-month-old baby was even able to sleep in the next room while he worked. My house was as clean after the job as when it had been before. If you need drywall repair, ask Rosalio.

if you are looking for a granite person you needn't look any further than Frank with Good Brothers...everyone has had experiences where things don't go right and everyone knows that it is about how you are treated and how you are taken care of once something doesn't go as planned...folks I'm here to tell you that when things were not going right on my project Frank made sure he took care of all of my problems and made it right with me.yes things happen(and the way Frank runs his business I'm sure things don't go wrong very often with these guys as they are very professional ) but if they do you will be glad you you have good brothers and not some joe you found on Craigslist because they were cheaper...you will be very thankful that Frank with good brothers is your granite rep and installers I know I am. Thanks Jim R.

Mitchell did an excellent job on our kitchen remodel. He was on time, courteous, and professional. He arrived on time and got to work immediately. We had him install a glass tile backsplash, hang cabinets, and install an over-the-range microwave. He went above and beyond by also trimming our blinds once he tiled the window box. I will be calling him again for our future remodeling projects!

I am a real estate investor and Five-Star Renovations built a 3-car garage in Keller for me from scratch and completed the whole project, passed city and HOA inspection timely, without me having to go check the site even once during the project.

I called Gary since he was reasonably priced per hour and I just needed a quick professionals opinion since I thought I knew what was wrong. Gary confirmed my suspicions of a slab leak. Gave me a fair estimate and told me he could even do the work on a weekend at the same price. (Not common for most plumbers or contractors) He showed up promptly and punctually both days. Photo documented everything incase there was a dispute from my insurance company and kept me in the loop on all repairs and even took care of some minor plumbing issues he found while doing the repair at no extra cost. Once I had a hole in my kitchen and the pipe repaired I conveyed my dismay of having to find a tile guy next to repair the floor. Gary told me he does floors also. He added that into a new estimate and guess what it was even better priced than I could have hoped. His work by the way is nothing short of stellar. I've had tile done several times and he does it the right way. No short cuts and not rushed. He even met his deadline of having to be done over the weekend. I can honestly say I can't be any happier with the service I received from Gary. He was so easy to work with and did everything as I hoped. I will definitely be using him again for any home repairs I need.

“The Industry Leader”. A bold statement for which Opus One Design Build deserves every letter. After a home accident my family and I were displaced in a hotel until repairs were completed. I posted a job request on Thumbtack and was contacted by 4 different contractors. RJ from Opus One Design Build was not only the first individual to contact me, he made contact within 15 minutes after my posting. Other contractors made contact hours or even a day later. Not only did RJ beat the pack in communication response, he was also the only one demonstrate a professional composure. This composure was also demonstrated by Russell, our Project Manager, also by Stacie and Wendy at the home office. This well engineered team ensured that all communications were promptly returned by the necessary staff member. Thanks to this finely crafted team we were able to have repairs, upgrades, and an addition completed in an astonishing time frame. All work completed matches the existing structure and the quality has exceeded expectations. A number of neighbors were so impressed the work flow and finished project they have requested referrals for home improvement projects. I do not often review businesses, and when I do it’s because they either struck out or hit one out of the park. Opus One Design Build unarguably falls in the category of the latter. My family and I are back in our home, and it feels like home. I cannot recommend another contractor for any project, large or small. They have certainly earned a customer for life.

Carlos was awesome. We wanted a wood panel accent wall built in the study. High quality work at a reasonable price. Not only was the work excellent, but Carlos was very courteous, respectful, and professional. He kept in contact with me, and let me know the status of the work being performed to prep the wood (with pictures), and let me know when he was on his way for the install the next day. As some of you may have experienced with some contractors, they aren't always the best communicators. Not a problem with Carlos. We are going to be having more work done to the house soon, and will be hiring Carlos to do it. He takes pride in his work, and sadly, that's becoming harder and harder to find these days.

Great work in a tight timeline. Manny stayed on budget and his team did excellent work with various types of work - indoor/outdoor painting, flooring, drywall repair, etc. My only feedback is that he takes a while to communicate, sometimes up to a day later. Hire Manny!

I would really recommend this remodeling company to any body needing any kind of work around their home. I called to get a quote to convert my garage into a bedroom with bathroom and also needed renovations in my kitchen. I called for a quote and they came out that same day. Very helpful and even gave me some advice to save a quick buck in the process. It didn't take long before they were starting to remodel. They kept me updated every step of the way and I really appreciate it. I loved the communication. Really happy with the final result. Nice family owned business. Will use them again.

We had some remodeling work requirement for an older property we had purchased and they did an outstanding job! Kept us well informed through out the process and completed in our timelines. They were also very flexible with some of the changes we wanted and were able to accommodate at a very reasonable price! I would highly recommend them!

I was renovating an old 70s house that was almost a complete gut job. Lots of drywall ripped out, holes to be patched, and resurfacing needed. Robert and his team were extremely communicative, which I appreciated. Lots of contractors can leave you in the dark as to their status, and next steps. They showed up every day when they said they would, and were extremely detailed. You could tell that they took pride in their work, and wanted it to be perfect. The project took a bit longer then they expected, but they were sincerely apologetic, and at the end of the day I would much rather have it done right and take longer by people that care, rather than slapped up hastily and gone tomorrow.

The designer Decra shake that GreyHammer installed looks stunning. Matthew and Farhan went above and beyond in helping me pick what is going to look best as far as product and color. Truly are the only "exterior decorators" I will ever use.

Brian and his crew did a wonderful job for us and really went the extra mile to ensure quality workmanship. There were several times where a lesser tradesman would’ve said “good enough”, but he was relentless. It’s hard to find such in the industry and we recommend him highly.

We used JC Construction for a bathroom remodel and flooring install in three rooms of our home. Other than a few delays which tend to occur no matter who you use, JC Construction worked very quickly and precisely. JC always made sure that we were happy with the work throughout the project and if we wanted something tweaked, his guys fixed it immediately. He also provided great insight on things we couldn't make a decision on which turned out better than we could have expected.

I had completely lost faith in hiring out any help when it comes to remodeling this condo I just bought a couple months ago. Learning as I go along I started stumbling when I tried tiling my shower. Found out about thumbtack from a friend and it linked me up with Jose and his crew. Nice group of guys, that showed up at 7 am for 3 days straight until the my shower was tiled and complete. I had 2 nightmare remodeling experiences prior to this and Jose saved the day and made my week. Shower looks great. Will hire again without hesitation on my next bathroom in a couple months. Thanks for showing me there are dependable and reasonably priced contractors out there. Do yourself and hire them! They work hard and do things right. No cutting corners.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
