Holiday Sit-down dinner for 14. Prime rib, shrimp cocktail, tossed salad, twice baked potatoes, green beans with silvered almonds, rolls and mini strawberry shortcake. Food was delicious, a little slow as to not being accustomed to my kitchen, not knowing where things were and not asking but with this large of dinner party it was hard for caterers to get my attention. Caterers only big problem was not leaving early enough (after we discussed it) to get through the extremely heavy traffic and arrive on time which threw dinner off from scheduled time. Since everyone attending were friends, it just worked out that we had more time to talk but it caused the caterers to cook and reheat dinner items because they had gotten cold waiting in traffic getting here. It ended up working out well, a good time was had by one and all and as I early mentioned, the food was delicious- far above what we had expected. We will highly recommend Lunas catering and also will use them again in any future catering needs.

Laura Eliel made my experience super easy and terrific. I wanted an in-home dining experience. She and her assistant arrived about 5 pm. I asked how can I help. They said, You can't! Guests arrived at 6:30 p.m. and we began a luxurious meal that was delicious and lovely. And, at the end of the evening, the kitchen was clean and I did not lift a hand!

Fantastic communication and reminders from Sugar Shaker Bakery/staff. Response time was less than 1 day. As a bride planning a wedding, this was very helpful. Candy quality great! My guests were very surprised and pleased. Nice that containers and serving utensils were provided.

Dave did a fabulous job catering our daughter's Texas-Style wedding...his base price is very affordable for just about any size group or event and we were able to add a number of additional sides and meats as well....Everything was delicious, there was plenty of it, the meat-eaters were in BBQ nirvana and the vegetarians had plenty of delicious sides to keep them happy....Dave perfectly adhered to the agreed upon timeframe to serve dinner and is a wonderfully outgoing & engaging presence to boot who clearly loves what he does ...the food was great , there was plenty of it and we had 150+ very happy and full guests as a result. He is also very flexible about menu choices and implied that he's got a lot more delicious cajun-inspired entrees up his culinary sleeve as well....very easy to work with...HIGHLY recommend for ANY occasion and just about any size group

Chef Heath made some very delicious food for my recent holiday party. He was very communicative, had great idea about what to serve and showed up on time with exactly the excellent food he promised. He even helped me plate/present the food which was very appreciated. I will definitely use Chef Heath again for my events.

My husband asked Seconds Catering to cook for our 1st anniversary lunchon. The food was freshly prepared with care, due to myslef having multiple allergies. The food was ready to serve, on time, after we returned from a family event. Chef Aaron had set the table beautifully and did an amazing job accommodating our specific request. We will definitely use Seconds Catering for our next big family event!!!!

Freestyle's attention to detail in aesthetics are only matched by the quality of the actual FOOD. Too often custom desserts end up looking far better than they taste. This stuff, on the other hand, is as much fun to eat as it is to look at. Jenny is a true chef as well as an artist, and it shows.

Michelle and Autumn did a wonderful job preparing a 9 course French style meal for my wife and I in our own home. The meal perfectly blended old world and new world French cuisine. We have a party coming up and would happily hire Michelle to cater.

I love her food and her attitude! She takes such joy in her work. She takes great satisfaction in making sure her clients are happy and satisfied. She is creative and thoughtful in her approach to food. She listens closely to her clients to make sure she understands what is needed. She pays attention to every detail. Abby put together a beautiful picnic supper for my daughter and her cheerleading squad. Everything was perfect and everyone enjoyed it. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone who needs to feed a crowd and wants to do it with style and grace!

Amanda is awesome! Whether you're looking for healthy meal prep/delivery or just need someone to cater a dinner with friends at your house -- she can handle it! Amanda prepares all of my meals and delivers them to me weekly, so I always know that I have delicious and healthy meals ready when it is time to eat. I just grab the labeled containers that she leaves in my refrigerator, and I'm ready to go. I have almost no time to prepare food, so this is extremely valuable to me. Amanda discusses my tastes and cravings, and designs a custom meal plan that is delicious and well-balanced. She has opened my eyes to so many healthy alternatives to foods that I love and to all sorts of new things that I never thought I would like. She always answers my questions and is really thoughtful in making sure I enjoy each meal and have something delicious for each day of the week. I can't recommend Amanda enough -- she truly helps me live a healthy lifestyle, and has even taught me how to prepare healthy meals for myself. I also had Amanda cater a dinner with friends, and it was such a great experience. She interacted with everyone and explained what she was doing. It was like a cooking class for all of us. Her gluten-free baked goods are phenomenal, and you definitely have to try her Cashew "Sour Cream" Sauce and vegan enchiladas! Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, paleo, gluten free, raw, etc, Amanda knows her stuff and will work with you to create some of the most delicious (and nutritious) foods you will ever eat.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
