Mike did a terrific job of communicating his availability. The price quoted was exactly what he charged me, even though it took longer than originally anticipated. The two new chair height toilets are a dramatic improvement over the low seat height models previously installed. The new kitchen faucet looks great and works very well. All of the work was done with minimal mess and disruption. The cleanup after the work was completed was also appropriate. I would recommend Mike for this type of handyman work and will certainly consider using him in the future for other types of projects.

This man is the master of the small jobs. He is honest, very fair in costs, definitely the most polite soul I have ever met, and an extremely hard worker. I started out with one project and had him do 3 before it was over. He will be my go to man for the jobs I have around my home, especially as I get older. I recommend him for your projects around your home. Don Knebel

Dale was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. He installed a ceiling fan which was at a 45° angle. Installation was no problem for him and he even went out of his way to go to Lowes and Home Depot to purchase additional parts. He even painted the screws to ensure they did not show up as silver on our black fan. AAA service. Thanks a bunch!! Highly recommend for numerous repairs you may have.

Medina Construction & Roofing did an excellent job replacing our roof when it was wrecked by hail. They repainted the ceiling inside, completely matched texture of the ceiling and paint color — they really did a beautiful job on the repairs and were fantastic to work with. Marcial was patient and professional throughout and his crew cleaned up like they had never been there and did solid work pretty quickly. I highly recommend Medina for home improvement projects.

Ezequiel is the man! I recently had the foundation fixed on a 1920s home and the bricks on the house were in shambles after the repair of the foundation. Ezequiel came out and made me feel better about my house - he repaired almost every single side of the house and he did a wonderful job. He even did small things around the house that I did not ask him to do, which is a sign of a gentleman who cares about his work. Thanks you very much Ezequiel, I'll be referring you!

I had a fairly simple light fixture installation request. Josh and team were the first to respond to my project and requested a call so he could properly understand the job. We talked on the phone for a few minutes and then set up a time for him to come over same day. He and his team were very polite, answered all of my questions, and did the job very well. I would highly recommend Josh and team for any home work - small or large! He is new to the area (not new to industry) as well so very happy to support his early stage business in CO.

Wilfredo and his team painted my entire house, remodeled my kitchen, added crown molding and refaced my fireplace mantel. We are very happy with how everything turned out and will be calling him back when we are ready to remodel our bathroom. Wilfredo was always very professional and he always went above and beyond to make sure he found me the colors, back splash and sink that I was specifically wanting. I would highly recommend him for any home improvement project.

From day one through the conclusion of the project, Ross was easy to get in touch with, answered all questions promptly and in a detailed manner and was a pleasure to work with. I have very high expectations for all work performed at my home, and Ross and his team exceeded them across the board. My covered patio looks amazing and I could not have asked for a better experience. Everything was completed in the timeframe Ross laid out in our initial meeting, and he was even able to add additional services not initially discussed as soon as I brought them up. I would absolutely recommend Dynamo Construction to anyone needing work done inside or outside their home, and they will be the first call I make for any projects moving forward. After two years of searching for a quality crew, I have finally found one that delivers exactly what they promise. Thanks for the excellent work, Ross! You've earned a lifetime customer.

“The Industry Leader”. A bold statement for which Opus One Design Build deserves every letter. After a home accident my family and I were displaced in a hotel until repairs were completed. I posted a job request on Thumbtack and was contacted by 4 different contractors. RJ from Opus One Design Build was not only the first individual to contact me, he made contact within 15 minutes after my posting. Other contractors made contact hours or even a day later. Not only did RJ beat the pack in communication response, he was also the only one demonstrate a professional composure. This composure was also demonstrated by Russell, our Project Manager, also by Stacie and Wendy at the home office. This well engineered team ensured that all communications were promptly returned by the necessary staff member. Thanks to this finely crafted team we were able to have repairs, upgrades, and an addition completed in an astonishing time frame. All work completed matches the existing structure and the quality has exceeded expectations. A number of neighbors were so impressed the work flow and finished project they have requested referrals for home improvement projects. I do not often review businesses, and when I do it’s because they either struck out or hit one out of the park. Opus One Design Build unarguably falls in the category of the latter. My family and I are back in our home, and it feels like home. I cannot recommend another contractor for any project, large or small. They have certainly earned a customer for life.

Dan is a swell guy. Interesting person to chat about and I enjoyed his thoughts on the projects I was doing to my home. I actually changed a plan of mine that I never had thought about (the placement of a door I'm building) and....well, that brought a lot of value to the work he did. Fun guy and I suggest picking his brain...he'll give honest feedback. Cheers

I hired Aleks Omega to install my house and install the foundation and driveway to a new home I was working on. I am a General Contractor and I have dealt with many subcontractors over the years. Albert Perez was very easy to work with and was very knowledgeable about what was going on. He was very responsive to my requests and was able to work with my schedule. I will continue using Aleks Omega as a key Subcontractor for my operations. I recommend them to anyone who wants a quality product done right.

I was very pleased that an appointment with a service man was scheduled for the next day after I called about my Microwave. The Service man was knowledgeable and efficiently corrected the problem. My only suggestion is that times for services/repairs should be made with a 2 hour window instead of a four hour window for time of arrival.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
