Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Jorge and his team were very professional from the beginning. The contract was broken down into an itemized statement of work and cost. The project (exterior house painting) was completed on time with all expectations met and exceeded. All J&L employees were courteous and friendly. I will be using J&L painting for future projects.

Mr. Bishop was very professional both before and during the project. I needed my living room painted from a very dark color to a very light one and I have very tall vaulted ceilings & walls. Before the paint project, I had a lot of questions and he answered all of them very promptly via email. He had all the necessary supplies and my living room looks AMAZING! The best part was that it only took ONE COAT - purchasing the higher price paint was very worth the money and I would not have known that without his recommendation. I will definitely be hiring him again and rest assured you will not be disappointed with his work.

I hired Restoration Painting to paint kitchen cabinets and remove and update kitchen backsplash. I chose this company based on the owners positive personality, willingness to do the exact work I was requesting without hesitation, and very reasonable prices. I leave a 2 star review based on an average of my experience; a 1 for the work, a 3 for the companies continued willingness to finish the tasks assigned and the owners attitude. To summarize the work, we had our backsplash replaced 3 separate times due to lack of and miscommunications of which tile should be going up, which left our sheet rock in a mess. There was no effort to try and repair Sheetrock until it was pinpointed and requested. I don’t use pinpointed lightly, any major or minor area that needed attention had to be pointed out by me. There was a huge lack of regard for any work that was subpar. The work took double the amount of time we were told it would take, not unusual, but mostly due to corrections. The cabinets were painted the backsplash was replaced (after I had to purchase the correct tile myself, should have done this on the front end) but this is what I am left with; cracks in 45% of the grout a day after the work was completed, broken tiles grouted to the wall, deck screws placed directly into the tile because of lost outlet covers that were not going to be replaced, one drawer completely broken, 4 cabinets put back on upside down, the baseboards not painted at all, putty all over the base of the cabinets walls and kitchen appliances, scratched paint, bubbled spray sheetrock, a broken disposal due to Sheetrock and grout particles being pushed into the sink, floors throughout the home smeared with paint, globs of paint dried that will have to be sanded and repainted on cabinets, a huge mess of Sheetrock and putty all over the counters and floors throughout the home, and to top it all off fast food trash in the kitchen and garage. Final summary of work, 5 days worth of 2 days of basic work and I’m going to now have to hire someone to come in and correct some (not all) of the work done. The total cost was reasonable and included materials, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Issac came out and painted our living room and dining room, the previous owners of our house painted the walls a very bright blue and we wanted a very light tan color. Our walls also have rounded edges, making the job even more tedious. Issac came out Friday night at 6:30 and gave us an extremely reasonable quote to do the work and began promptly at 9 am Saturday morning. He worked until he had the job complete. He did an incredible job! He has a eye for perfection and we could not be anymore satisfied. When company came over to see our house, we had nothing but extremely positive comments as well as many requests for his business card. We already received a quote from him to do the rest of our house and will be using him again in the future. Very professional man and extremely pleased with the work he did for us.
