Terry was able to fix the problem and suggest improvements to my sprinkler system. He has a lot of experience with older installations and that was very useful. His pricing is fair and more affordable than the bigger sprinkler and irrigation companies. I am glad I hired him, and I will contact him for any future sprinkler issues.

My experience with Santamaria Irrigation Landscapes was excellent! And although, it has only been a few weeks since he worked on my front lawn, so far, I'm quite happy with the outcome; he has a fantastic crew -- both Rafael and his crew are quite knowledgeable, it gave/gives me tremendous comfort knowing I had people that knew what they were doing.

Allied Services provided excellent work. They arrived on time and replaced three (non-working) irrigation solenoid valves and diaphragms. I highly recommend Allied Services. Cost was substantially below what a landscape firm charged me last year.

Mosaia and his crew did a large backyard renovation for me. This job was done in a couple phases over about a month. They did a great job. Communication was excellent throughout the entire project. His prices are very fair. Here is a list of the things they did. Built a boulder retaining wall about 4ft tall by 80ft long. It turned out great. They also tore down the old wall of railroad ties. They took care of the permit and dealing with the city. It went pretty smooth Installed a new fence and gate on top of the wall. Looks great. They dug in drainage lines to stop the erosion in my back yard. Cut out a strip of the patio and installed some new drains to stop flooding. Installed OK milsap stone around all the back yard patio Installed a stone staircase thru the wall. It looks really good They moved the irrigation lines and fixed the broken ones Installed a flagstone path leading to the stairs Installed a new concrete pad for our pool pump and filter Built two flower gardens and filed them with potting soil. Laid new sod in the whole back yard. Mosaia handled all the procurement of the needed items. Everything from stones, concrete, wood, you name it, they took care of it. I will be having him do some more work on our yard soon. Their stone work is great.

Daniel went above and beyond the repairs that I asked for, finding buried heads that I didn't even know were installed when I moved in. He capped unnecessary heads, raised and leveled others, and relocated one. He had a full set of nozzles ready to replace others of mine that were not a fit for the yard. I would recommend him to anyone, and would go back to him for future irrigation or masonry help I need.

Adan prepped our irrigation system, made minor repairs and got our system operational for this year. He also installed some low voltage/high intensity lighting in the front flowerbeds that included tunneling under the sidewalk. He was prompt and very cordial. He completed the job quickly, competently and the bill was extremely reasonable. I would suggest him to all my friends and family. I will definitely use him again. Jerry Joyner

He's very honest, we had some issues that were found when putting in a built in book case and he was very upfront about what he thought it was he even met the inspector to make sure we got a fair evaluation. He has been able to be flexible with our request and even when we change our minds about a decision we made he is willing to make the changes and does a great job with a great attitude. We have had him work on our deck to built in shelving to interior painting... We ask and he delivers! He is also honest about what he is good at and what he is not good at and will bring in the right professionals for the job of and when needed. He is our go to home improvement contractor!

Developed and implemented a plan, installing a new flowerbed in the backyard SW corner and along the back property line. Extensive planting, mulching and replacing all metal borders in front and back with cut stone and placing ornamental rock around 3 big trees and 2 shrubs. Adjusting irrigation to ensure total coverage of the new plants. Larry and Curtis were very helpful and cooperative and the crew did a good job. The price was reasonable and within my budget. The job was completed on time. At this point I am not sure that some of the plants will make it, but with a 1 year warranty I am confident that this will be dealt with if need be. Bottomline: I would use them again and recommend them to others.

We had a unique design idea for our custom flower beds. We interviewed multiple contractors over a six month period. When we finally met Gabriel we were confident that he understood the concept. Now could he execute? Absolutely, Gabriel and his team at Clean Green did an incredible job. They maintained a clean and safe work site and finished in a timely manner. They did a great job at fair price. I highly recommend Gabriel / Clean, Inc. every chance i get.

South Pacific Contractors repaired a retaining wall for me. Our home is almost 100 years old, and it’s not clear how old the retaining wall is exactly. We had to but through some areas to help with drainage, and we hired SPC for repair work. They did a wonderful job. They were quick to respond to the request, quick to bid (very reasonable) and went above and beyond. The wall looks great and they even repaired areas that needed some extra patching. Highly recommend these masons!

JC provided a competitive bid and was responsive to all of our questions up front as we reworked scope of the irrigation project to what we needed. We had him add a new drip zone for raised beds. JC and his crew were flexible with our scheduling and came when they said they would. The installation was completed to what we requested and JC said he will come back to test everything two days after to make sure it is functioning properly once the pvc connections are dry. Will update the review if needed then.

Jose was great, I had called 5 other irrigation specialists and had no responses, the one I did get hold of was not accepting new clients. Jose got back to me immediately and was at my house within 2 hours to evaluate the problem. He was then back the next morning to fix it with little mess. We will keep

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
