Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a massage therapist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask your massage therapist if they offer consultations over a video chat or phone call. If they do, ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. For example, ask what precautions they're taking to keep both parties safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might also want to ask if they offer gift cards that can be used at a later time, remote services or even virtual lessons for you or members in your household.

Also, ask how they plan to handle payments, and whether you can pay through an online or digital method instead of with physical cash or credit cards.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a massage therapist when social distancing?

Because massage therapy requires person-to-person contact, social distancing is not possible. However, you can ask massage therapists near you if they can offer remote services instead, such as lessons for you and your partner.

If you don’t want to book an appointment with a massage therapist right now, but you will in the future when the pandemic subsides, consider paying your massage therapist in advance or tipping them anyway. You can also ask about buying a gift card for future work.

Do massage therapists offer remote or virtual services?

Ask massage therapists near you about the possibility of remote services. You might come across profiles that state the therapist is offering remote services such as lessons and techniques you can do on your own, with a friend or with a partner.

Does a massage therapist need to enter my home?

Many massage therapists operate their businesses out of their own homes, though some offer mobile massages and come to your home. You should ask the massage therapist where they typically operate and if they are making any special accommodations to better observe the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing

If you must cancel or delay your massage therapy appointment due to COVID-19, consider asking the therapist if they can offer massage techniques or lessons via video chat, email or some other digital format. You can also ask if it's possible to buy gift cards that can be used at a later time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a massage?

Many massage therapists accept digital payments through Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. Even businesses that do not typically accept digital payments may be changing their methods to practice social distancing. Just check with your massage therapist before the appointment to see how they handle payments.

How can I find out if a massage therapist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential COVID-19 service provider varies from state to state and city to city. To see which businesses are considered essential in your area, visit the official government website of your state or city.

You can also read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How long is a Swedish massage?

A Swedish massage can range from 45 minutes to 120 minutes or more. A longer massage allows the massage therapist to give you an all-over massage and then circle back to focus on areas in need of extra bodywork. Some massage therapists recommend that your first massage be longer to give the therapist time to learn more about your health and any injuries or pain before providing you with a healing massage. The longer your massage, the more it will cost. Swedish massage is made up of five body strokes designed to relax, heal, improve circulation and maintain health. The techniques are called effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. During Swedish massage, all parts of the body are addressed, and the client is often unclothed and draped with a cloth. Swedish massage is proven to be beneficial to mental and physical health, and has been shown by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine to boost the immune system.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

James was so awesome! He came to our home and provided a massage table and fresh sheets! He gave us privacy when undressing for our massages and was extremely well-versed in technique. Our romantic couple’s massage was awesome and we can’t wait to book again!

If chronic pain and stress describe you, you'll want to hire James. Quick background on me - I've been working in the health and fitness industry for 15 years and hold five different accredited credentials as a personal trainer. I have battled arthritis since 2009 and suffer from constant pain, inflammation, and emotional distress. I also have bulging discs in my lower back. By the grace of God, I am still able to exercise! To date, I've seen five different massage therapists, six chiropractors, three physical therapists, and an acupuncturist. I’d give each therapist six months to a year … when a therapy treatment stopped helping, I would try another therapist or treatment (that’s why I’ve seen so many). Of all the therapies, I've found massage therapy to help me the most. After two years of consistent messages, my lower back started to progressively get worse, so I knew it was time to find someone with more of a medical/therapeutic background. I spent a lot of time researching and found ten different top-rated massage therapists. Here is a list of the top five reasons why I ended up hiring James to come to my house every week of the year: 1.) He loves people. James spent a lot of time getting to know me, assessing, and understanding my needs on our first session (he didn't charge for this). For James, he would tell you this is a ministry for him, not a job. 2.) He wears many hats. James is a chiropractor, certified personal trainer, AND a massage therapist. Not only am I getting a therapeutic massage ... I'm getting professional adjustments and knowledge about fitness and nutrition (and he actually lives the lifestyle!) Since seeing James, I’ve been able to stop seeing my normal chiropractor which has saved me money and time. Additionally, adjustments are so much more effective after doing a massage! My back pain has already been reduced by over 50% to date from seeing him. 3.) He is educated. James holds several advanced credentials as a massage therapist, including cupping. He has his own advanced deep tissue massage therapy techniques that he teaches to other massage therapists. As a massage therapist, he actually graduated sum cum lade in his class! As a result, he understands biomechanics and anatomy at a very advanced level and is able to work with very complex cases. 4.) He doesn’t overcharge. From a business standpoint, James is in a position of strength because if he wanted to, he could charge a hefty fee. Think about it: he travels to you, he holds several credentials as a chiropractor/massage therapist/personal trainer, and he offers so many different services. If you think about how much a chiropractor alone would charge, he could easily charge $250/hour for everything he does! Instead, he understands not everyone is a millionaire and charges below the industry standard. Like I said in #1, this is a ministry for him. 5.) He is a man of character. He values God, family, and people. Since I have been working with James, this has become very clear to me in his communication style and the types of conversations we engage in. He always gives glory to God when he talks about his story. BONUS: He was in the NFL. I would have hired him either way, but it makes me feel even more privileged to work with a former athlete If you want to personally call me or reach out to me for reference reasons, I would be happy to do that (just visit my website and contact me). I hope that you’ll give James a shot and experience what I get to! – Daniel Stein, CEO of

Melissa was great. She spent a great deal of precision on getting the relaxation setting right. She is courteous and gracious with things like water or sodas and warm towels. The location is in a nicely appointed building in Plano. Melissa is also a very skilled therapist. I was completely relaxed after the massage and would highly recommend her service to anyone. I intend to visit again soon.

John made my husband feel comfortable and at ease from the very beginning, with completely relaxed not too far after. My husband deals with chronic back & neck issues due to his job and John's different massage strategies helped to work out so much of his pain. And apparently this was just with medium pressure :-) Paul said this is the best he's felt in a LONG time so thank you John!

Parkinson's has made my husband's muscles very rigid. This causes his posture to bend, his shoulders and arms to curl, and his head to be angled downward. After months of intense PT, the rigidity was unchanged. Within the first week of Rodney's focused massages, my husband's affected muscles were noticeably lengthened, and he was able to improve his posture (and outlook) remarkably. Rodney continues to target affected muscle groups; he is integrated in an overall plan which includes me, the caregiver, doctor, and physical therapist. We can't believe how much difference Rodney has made.
