After having granite installed in my kitchen, I needed the plumbing installed in my new sink, the disposal hooked up and the new faucet installed. Mike did a great job, cleaned up after himself and arrived on time! I will definitely be calling him again.

Dan is a very nice man who is attentive and easy to work with. I was well pleased with his work (flooring my attic) which was carefully done and reasonably priced. I would definitely hire him for future jobs.

Excellent work! Juan & Alex were professional and knowledgeable the items I needed repaired & installed (shower rods, train rack, door hing adjustments). They had all the tools - especially to install into tile, were on time, worked quickly, & cleaned up well. I am very happy with the work & I will definitely hire Juan & his crew again!

I can't say enough good things about Clint Smiley and his crew. We interviewed a few flooring contractors/installers and Clint was very personable, responsive, and knowledgeable. He was the only one who had experience with a non-toxic flooring product we were interested in using called Rubio Monocoat and his price was very competitive. Additionally, approximately a month after installation we had water damage that required floor replacement and he got right on it. Based on my experience I would recommend him to family and friends. Due to this experience I have no problem acting as a reference for him and his company. Sincerely, Justin 619-851-9975

I’m a perfectionist and this crew exceeded my expectations. Jay knew what I wanted, we communicated over the phone only and pictures were sent to me of the samples. They finished the work fast. Ramon, the floor installer and his crew are super nice guys. They installed carpet on the second floor and a beautiful laminate on the first floor. The house looks amazing!!! Thank you!!!

I've been through so many bad contractor experiences- it was really hard for me to start this project, with what I consider a lot of money at stake, and what it costs when you get a bad contractor. The cost in dollars, materials, aggravation, time, mess and stupid stuff you just learn to live with is usually the inevitable when you decide to hire out. I'm so pleased to say Mike set a new bar for exceptional! From the emails we shared before the in-person estimate to the final dust pan of clean up in the garbage, Mike exceeded all expectations. He knows installation from the perspective of a craftsman. It's not about just slapping it in there and covering the details with quarter round, extra grout, glue or shortcuts. Every detail is attended to and addressed. It is given the exact consideration as if it were to be installed in his house. He gave me the freedom of picking the materials, but gauged it against his resources. He gave me the confidence that I got a good material at a good price. It allowed me to flex my budget and spend the money where it counted- in the install. Anyone can put laminate and tile in, but very few can do it right. Right as in pay for it one time- not the second and third do-overs. When it came to the hidden costs of projects (not knowing WHAT is under that floor you have), he was fair and gave options. He does respect your budget. He's not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but he is the best outcome for your money. Everything is in writing and upfront. You will not have different people in and out of the project. The other big positive is that your project is the most important project. You are not postponed to finish up or start another project. This means the timeline- is the timeline. He (and his family) has been doing this long enough to accurately gauge how long things take, even with little stuff that comes up. I had some dips in my concrete that needed to be fixed, but they were fixed and still completed given the extra work. He will communicate before, during and after the project, stick to timelines and respect your house. He is cognizant that you are still there during the day or after work. You will be part of the process, but not responsible for reminding him of the little things. I waited almost 15 years to remove and replace the flooring in my house, to not only get the most of what was in there, but the dread of knowing this was not something I could do myself and I would need to bring someone in. It was worth the wait to have an entire house of new floors, laminate and tile. I just can't say enough about Mike's professionalism and craftsmanship. Although I've gotten all my flooring needs fixed, I'm really excited to be able to pass his name out to friends and family. I'm pleased to post a review for him and will be enjoying my new floors for many years to come.

I am so thankful we were able to have Wilfredo come paint during spring break! Our house is an open concept and they painted from the entry all the way into the living room along with a small hallway. They arrived on time and were professional. All tile was covered with paper and furniture covered with plastic to ensure cleanliness. Baseboards were checked all away around of any possible paint and touch ups were completed prior to leaving. Planning to have them come back this summer to paint remaining rooms.

We were selling our house in McKinney and the carpet needed to be changed, so got quotes from a handful of carpet installers. Of all of them we really liked Michael's price and also the quality of the samples. The installation was scheduled and the crew showed up on time. They did an excellent job and cleaned up afterwards. Because of the thickness of the carpet, later we found it was really hard to close the doors, so called Michael and raised the concern. He immediately send a guy to fix the issue and waited patiently for the payment until the issue was corrected. I will hire Michael in a heartbeat for any future needs.

The crew did a great job, and went above and beyond! In fact, they were able to install engineered wood flooring on a particle board sub-flooring (pier & beam house)...something installers for a home improvement store said they would NOT tackle. I would highly recommend MP for wood floor installation in your home!

Jose and his helper installed red oak floors in our kitchen from the subfloor up-big job. They made it happen quickly and in my opinion professionally. The detailed trim work on the stairs is amazing. We plan to have his team back to refinish our entire house. I trust him and his work. Not to mention he did all this work at a very reasonable rate. Great job Jose!

Alfonzo installed a shower to my tub.... He tiled above, and around the tub along with all the tile on the bathroom floor. I was very pleased with the work he did. Alfonso was also willing and did do other tile repair work for me in other areas of my house which was not in the initial estimate. I would use his service again and would recommend him to others.....

After attempting to contact 4 different contractors, all were referred by word of mouth, and none of them responding I was about over it. A friend told me about Thumbtack so I opened the app and entered my info. I immediately had 4 responses one of which was from Carlos. In his initial response he stated that he was eager to work. After reading his reviews I set up a time to meet. He was on time and we talked about the job of putting in laminate floors. Throughout the installation Carlos gave me updates on the progress. I was so pleased with his work that I’m going to have him back to do some additional work.

Ever tackled a big remodel job for us and did an excellent job. He installed laminate floors throughout our home and remodeled our kitchen (painted cabinets, installed granite, and new backsplash). He also completed several painting projects (trim & bedrooms). He was easy to communicate with and finished the job within a reasonable amount of time.

Great work in a tight timeline. Manny stayed on budget and his team did excellent work with various types of work - indoor/outdoor painting, flooring, drywall repair, etc. My only feedback is that he takes a while to communicate, sometimes up to a day later. Hire Manny!

Roberto did all the flooring in my house. 95% laminate, 5% tile. Everything came out great! We had an amazing experience working with Roberto, he was very professional, available at all times, and willing to help us with every question we had. He completed the work on time, and he delivered everything we had originally agreed on and more! I definately recommend working with him. I also bought the laminate from him, and everyone that comes to my place loves it. He did a great job.

Rick and his crew did an amazing job on our floors. We went from vinyl to ceramic tile on a pier and beam house which requires some additional work to be done prior to installing tile. The guys did an amazing job and really impressed us with their workmanship and quality of their knowledge. I would recommend them to anyone I know. If you are looking for a quality job at a fair price, look no further than this company.

I had an excellent experience with Sami and his crew from The Flooring Shop. Having been through another home improvement that was disastrous, I was very skeptical but they delivered with flying colors. Sami was the only person I got an estimate from that actually followed up with me and was responsive to my emails/texts. Before, during, and after the process, he would always be available to help even after hours and on weekends. They remodeled 2 baths for me installing tile for floor and walls on shower/tub plus a frameless shower. I was very impressed how fast they got the job done and sometimes were working until late. They did quality work at a fair price and I would definitely recommend. Thanks guys!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
