Let me say right up front that the fantastic experience I had dealing with Mr. Sosa during the resolution of my long standing plumbing problem could not have been better in any way. Over the past eleven years I've had two plumbing companies come out to repair what I thought was clogged drains. Their solutions (fix) was only temporary. Finally, Mr. Sosa has diagnosed my problem and corrected it by raising the height of a standpipe to meet the building code. When I hired him he quoted me a price. He completed the work in an outstanding manner and charged me 33 percent less than the price quoted. Mr. Sosa is an intelligent, honest, God fearing man who will be my plumber in the future. I highly recommend his services without reservations.

Mr. Jones went out of his way on a Saturday morning to make a repair on a damaged window frame. He made the repair, painted and checked the rest of the wood on the house and repaired any other loose wood he saw.

Amazing, amazing, amazing! I ended up breaking a bedroom window and was so worried about getting it fixed. Glass works responded quickly, was able to just look at the pictures, and he gave the most reasonable price. As for the day of repair, he arrived on time, and was in and out. What more could you ask for?! Would definitely recommend.

After the realtor told us that a spotless house would be critical for the improving our odds for a quick sale of our home, we decided to hire a cleaning service. Living in Cibolo, Tx, I wasn't sure about who did good work. Long ago, I had good experiences with two different cleaning ladies and was charged about $30 an hour for a reasonable cleaning job. But neither of these ladies were available. So I looked at reviews on Thumntack and tried to schedule with one but could not work out a time that worked. Frustrated, I tried the next one on the list, HandySpurs. They returned my call immediately and scheduled for the next day! When Luis and his team arrived, (three altogether), they were right on time. They brought their own supplies and worked for three hours straight. Our house was a two story 4 bedroom with three bathrooms. When they were finished, our house was amazingly clean! They cleaned better than any service I had ever had. Then I was stunned when he wanted to charge me $70! Needless to say, I became a regular customer and loved that I could always schedule appointments by text anytime. I could quickly reschedule a cleaning by text if we had a sudden showing and that flexibility was a pleasure. Well, we sold our house quickly but we kept using HandySpurs. The day after the movers came, Luis and his team came out and cleaned the house so well that all I had to do for the new owners was clean the fridge and oven. All else, walls, windows, base boards, vents, light fixtures, all floors, everything ! was so clean it sparkled. I told Luis that when I got situated in our new home in Kansas I would write about his good work. I'm keeping my promise. I'm not one to write reviews but I sure appreciate reading others so I thought I should contribute both to praise HandySpurs as well as assist future potential consumers. Honestly, I don't know how he makes a profit. He does not overcharge but more than that- he and his team are simply the most hard working cleaning service I have ever used. I hope my glowing but truthful review doesn't cause them too have too many new referrals! Ha! I actually worry about the working TOO hard to please their customers! Hopefully, they will settle down to a group of customers who are happy to pay for excellent work and who appreciate their flexibility, professionalism, as well as friendliness. We gave them a big tip for their final cleaning the day we left but it still wasn't enough. They were simply wonderful.

Door installations, repair: If anyone has any sort of needs regarding doors, Cory is the guy to contact. His knowledge and great professional experience covers doors, windows, and general construction. We contacted Cory to replace two very old exterior doors – he did a beautiful job with both of the new doors. He also remediated a door that had been poorly installed by another company -- Cory fixed everything that was wrong with the door. When we’re ready to replace our front door, Cory will be the one we call. He is very professional, well organized, and wonderful to work with.

We hired Lance to re-frame our patio cover to vault the ceiling and to reduce the number of columns that were there. We did not give him much direction, and Lance came up with a great solution. Lance and his team did a great job and really opened up the space. We are very happy with the quality of work and communication we received. We would definitely recommend UpBuild for residential projects.

I hired Derek to help us with a variety of small projects around the house so that we could get our house on the market. The projects included everything from fixing some patio doors and installing outdoor ceiling fans to recaulking around windows and painting. He was very conscientious about using his time wisely and worked constantly and quickly throughout the two and a half days he was here. I was very satisfied with his work and would absolutely hire him for anything else I need done. Great handyman and a super nice person.

Nick and Zach did our bathroom backsplash, replaced a water damaged bathroom window sill, installed crown moulding in our bath and office, and repaired some damaged attic trusses. They did a great job on everything, especially the crown moulding. In fact I should probably have them come back and re-do all of the crown moulding that I did myself downstairs, since it is not nearly to their level of craftsmanship.

Arthur with Resurrection General Contractors was my point of contact for my roofing project. It's not often I write a review or share my thought but when you have a company that delivers on their promise 100% I would recommend them. Arthur was very professional and went out of his way to ensure my needs were met. My roof and soffits are straighter than they ever have been. In addition Arthur was able to provide competitive bids on replacement windows and I'm looking forward to having them replaced next week. Thanks again for all your help! Best regards, Dena

Bought a rundown house that needed a lot of work. Peace general contracting was able to help do a variety of the jobs. From siding the exterior, installing Windows and doors, patching concrete, or installing a ladder to the attic. No job was too big or small, yet the attention to detail was the same!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
