These former US Marines are amazing! It was virtually magic. In three days these fantastic craftsmen excavated & leveled the areas, formed and poured 3700 square feet of Garage Pad, Parking area and Driveway, in concrete. They made suggestions that made our project even better than we envisioned. The price was more than fair and the quality of the finished job is fabulous. If you want to see pictures, I'll send them to you. They are truly the greatest. They made a dream come true! J Aaron & Rhonda Cundall, Denton Texas, elmo@mt.net

Manny and Rene have the the exceptional combination of multiple skills, talents, and good communication. Each day they had a goal to accomplish and a plan to achieve that goal. They kept us informed about what they were going to do as well as how and when they were going to do it. The main project was removing and replacing an unsafe garage ceiling and repairing a water damaged kitchen ceiling. Manny is phenomenal with matching existing textures on repairs and creating new textures on ceilings and walls. That is the stuff you can see, and of course you want that to look great, and this team will see that it does look great. But they also concentrate on getting important things done right with great concern for everyone's safety in the places you can't see such as installing some insulation in an odd place in the attic, replacing an attic access, reinforcing the base of a wall to the concrete foundation, and replacing a noisy antique bath vent fan that had become disconnected from the vent duct with a modern quiet high tech vent fan with light, nightlight, and buetooth for music. They had awesome equipment and tools to get all the different jobs done. They are very accommodating to your wants and needs and worked only my project from start to finish--no juggling multiple jobs. I highly recommend Flawless Construction.

Billy’s Services took on the job of replacing all of the water lines leading from the city meter to and throughout my house. As part of that job, his men also replaced the bathroom floor and all of the bathroom fixtures. Additionally, the drain from the kitchen sink was rerouted to allow the water to flow more directly to the sewer line. Because my hot water heater is powered by natural gas, the tank had to be replaced in order to comply with my city’s building code. Once everything was in place, the bathroom floor and walls around the bathtub were tiled and the rest of the walls painted. All of this work was scheduled for completion within a two-week period. Heavy rains, however, caused the job to last a few days longer. Overall I am extremely pleased with the work done by Billy Blankenship. His workers were very friendly, courteous, and helpful. I was given a projected cost before the work ever commenced and the job did not exceed that amount. In my opinion, Billy Blankenship is very honest and is more than willing to work with his potential customers to ensure their complete satisfaction. I would definitely recommend his service to anyone whose home is in need of plumbing and/or remodeling. The only thing I could suggest as an improvement to his company might be better communication with and among those who work for him.

Andre and his team removed an old metal fence in our backyard and driveway, and installed an 8' and 6' wood fence. The job was made difficult because of numerous large rocks and buried cement. The Ascot crew worked incredibly hard and put up a great fence. The job was completed in only 2 days and very reasonably priced. I highly recommend Ascot Fence.

Mike with HomeRun Fencing and his staff did an Excellent Job. Mike was quick to respond to my request for an estimate, came out the next day, gave a very reasonable price, started the job on time and finished a day early. He used 10' metal poles and sunk them an extra two feet in concrete. The cross beams on the fence were stronger than the usual ones used by everyone else. He also repaired my deck with first rate workmanship. I recommend Mike and HomeRun Fencing without any reservation, they are 5 star in everyway.

Mitchell Lowery has completed multiple jobs for us over the years from replacing carpeting with wood floors, to outside decking to painting, to building us a laundry room, tile work, etc. There just doesn't seem to be anything he can't do and his work is outstanding. We trust him completely with everything concerning our house. We would not hire anyone else. We refer him as often as we can especially after friends come over and see his work. You want good, quality work from someone who knows what they're doing, hire Mitchell Lowery.

Pote and his crew did a great job installing a stamped concrete walkway and replacing and fixing some mortar cracks from ground shifting. They showed up as scheduled, and despite a few rain delays, they were able to complete the job. I plan to use him again in the future and definitely recommend them!

How lucky are my wife and I to have found Cesar. We have many good things to say about Cesar beginning with he is an expert craftsman and a perfectionist. We were looking for a contractor to remodel our master bathroom, which included extensive demolition, moving the shower, installing a larger bathtub, rerouting the plumbing under the concrete slab, all new marble tile (floor and walls), new marble counter tops, a new bath cabinet, texturing walls, installing a frame less glass shower enclosure, painting (he had to paint the bathroom twice because of a poor color choice). During the process of doing the above remodel, we decided that 2 upstairs bathrooms needed new floor tile which Cesar also did for us. Additionally, we had new granite installed in our kitchen and we asked Cesar to install the limestone backsplash for us. Cesar contracted for us to have a spice cabinet built to enclose the exposed side of the refrigerator, which turned out spectacular. I cannot say enough good about Cesar and his work ethic. He is extremely honest, very thorough, extremely respectful of you and your property. Cesar knows what he is doing and he does not take shortcuts to get the job done, you can be sure that he will do the job the right way. During the time he spent in our home, Cesar and his great colleague Ozzie (Oswaldo) became part of the family. When the job was done we felt like he was moving out. Sort of sad to see them go. Cesar and Ozzie will do well because they make a great team, they are very honest, and they have a superior work ethic, and a talent for remodeling. Above it all, we found Cesar to price his labor very reasonably. For our job, he presented us with the actual invoices for all materials without markup. Rest assured that should we need work done around our new home, we will be calling Cesar and Ozzie back again. Good luck to you Cesar and Ozzie. You deserve all the best!

I hired Ever to do 3 jobs for me. Paint and texture my entire garage, epoxy the garage floor, and paint my concrete patio in the back all one color. He showed up with his team on friday ready to work and knocked out all the garage prep work, taping off and texture. On Saturday he painted the entire garage, did the epoxy, and painted the patio. I came home from work at night and just stood at my open garage grinning and shaking my head with complete satisfaction. He did an amazing job and went above and beyond to guarantee my wife and I were very happy! He even painted and mounted our shelves and flag brackets, and cut and made a better attic lid cover for us which I really appreciated. We will be calling Ever back for any future plans we have in the future. My wife and I will be hiring again for more work!!!

Juan was the only installer that addressed my main concern which was to ensure the slab was level before installing the floor. He took the time to check every room and then pour self leveling concrete to ensure floor was level. The finished floor is solid unlike the one that we replaced which was installed back in 2011 that creaked when we stepped on it. His price was fair and upfront. He was punctual. He and his partner were efficient and precise. I definitely recommend this company, they know what they are doing and are true professionals.

Joel and his team were absolutely fantastic. He is very knowledgeable and has great recommendations. We had them install new drywall and ceiling in our “kitchen”. They were able to repair some damage to our ceiling and it turned out great. They also installed all of the tile floors: main bathroom, master bathroom and in our kitchen. Absolutely amazing! Their work was great and we’ll be using them again for later on to install our baseboards. I’ve added some before and after images.

I first contacted New Direction Structure Care when the original people who were to install our floors didn't show up. We were in a bit of a rush as we were hoping to move into the house the following weekend. The fellows from New Direction met me the same day for an estimate and began work the very next day. It was a huge load off of my mind to know that we wouldn't be moving into a house with bare concrete floors. The work was done more quickly than I had hoped for and it looks amazing. The even fixed a water leak that they noticed while installing the floors. I couldn't be more pleased with New Direction and I will definitely be contacting them the next time the house needs work that is beyond the scope of my limited abilities.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
