Michael did a beautiful job painting the interior of our home and adding rain gutters. He was very responsive and always positive, even to last minute requests. He kept me updated on the status of the project and made helpful suggestions along the way. He worked long hours to get the job done and took care to clean up any materials or mess each day. We love the way the paint job changed the look of our home!

Just organized by taya wowed us. She is amazing and she is an embodiment of ideas. We built our home and we engaged taya and her team we intend to finish our plans with the architect. Taya and her team were very efficient, working with us to make it work. They helped us in developing the layout, in selecting the right furniture, window coverings, lamps, rugs and a whole lot of thing. I really enjoyed the colors which were used for our home and all the credits go to taya and her team. What we taught was going to give us a big problem, was simplified just like when we were placing orders for our couch from France. Also, taya and her team helped us in selecting the perfect wood which we used for all our furniture. They also did suggest the color themes which we should use for our interiors and also the living room plans was designed by them. Compared to other home stagers and interior designers, just organized by taya is simply fantastic because as well as delivering top class service, their cost also comes at a well affordable rate. One thing I can assure them is that I will definitely work with them very soon.

Teresa helped me sell a home in just weeks... it was hard for buyers to visualize its floor plan strengths without furniture. She chose the appropriate furniture and accessories for the style of this contemporary loft which accented all of its positive features! She was on budget and on time and a pleasure to work with.

I've found Lauren via Thumbtack for her Wedding Planning Services. I have noted that Lauren is very determined, hardworking, and puts in the extra time for her business. During our meeting she told me she has her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts in Interior Design from the Art Institute in Houston. Perfect, I thought! I recently bought a new home and needed some design work. I told her what I was looking for, what I needed, and I gave her a deadline due to a party I would be hosting soon and she executed! When an issued occurred she followed-up and ensured it was corrected. I'm very pleased with her Interior Design service and will recommend her services.

Lee'Or helped me redo my living room and get window coverings for the front windows of my house. I definitely had thoughts on what I wanted in my living room and Lee'Or helped it all come together. She has a great eye and I'm in love with my new rug, curtains and pillows. I was also very picky and she was very patient with me. Sometimes pulling fabric three or four times for us to look at. When I found dining chairs that needed new stain and fabric she had someone that could do it, when I needed someone to shorten a table she had it done in days. I would highly recommend Lee' Or to anyone needing an interior decorator.

Jann & Elizabeth of Wisdom + Frost Interiors are an exceptionally smart, hard working and professional Interior Design firm. I had a small bathroom remodel project which they helped with the design. They were very patient and insightful on what elements needed to be incorporated in the design. Moreover, Jann & Elizabeth were very cost conscious and helped me stay on budget regarding the fixtures and materials used in the project. They are constantly on the forefront of trends in the industry and provide excellent customer service. Their attention to detail, brilliant design ideas, and understanding of client needs helped bring my bathroom project to fruition. I highly recommend Wisdom + Frost Interiors for your interior design and special project needs.

Alex is amazing! She came to help organize my daughter’s playroom. She understood the issues parents have with kids toys in small spaces. Alex helped me go through each toy and decide on what needed to stay. The toys that made the cut, she created a specific place that way clean up is way easier. She also labeled everything and took toys to charity. Alex has great ideas on how to maximize space and is also very good a interior design! If you’re looking for someone to declutter, and develop more systems in your home so that your space make more sense. Alex is your girl! 2 thumbs up! Thank you Alex!

As with any big job we obtained three bids from separate remodeling contracting companies in the Houston area to remodel our outdated 80’s style kitchen and dining room. We wanted to combine both spaces to make one large "family friendly’ kitchen. We knew we were looking at a fair estimate when each of the bids came within $1000 of one another for what turned out to be over a $50,000 job, but it left us with a the harder task on how to decide what company to go with. What made our decision to go with Kitchen and Bath To Go, was Libby, their in house interior designer. What impressed us the most was how she easily made us imagine and see greater possibilities for our space and her willingness to give us free design advice before we had even decided to hire them. We could really see she has a passion for transformation and thinking outside the box. All of the decorative and atheistic descions that needed to be made, such as cabinetry style, paint finishes, flooring, granite, etc...it was all just so overwhelming, but with her guidance and vision. Everything just came together for us. The project administrator, Reagan, provided us with a detailed weekly schedule of who would be out on what day and what they would be doing. Their workers are skilled artisans that transformed our kitchen into a true designer space that’s liveable and one we are that proud of. Marlon, the project manager, was always stopping by to make sure everything was on point and on schedule. Of course with any job there are unexpected issues that come up, but the he was always accessible and saw to it that the corrections were quickly and properly addressed. We could not be happier with the decision we made to hire this company and have recommended them to many of our friends and family. Our next project, to remodel the our master bathroom and powder room. We have already put a bug in Libby’s ear to put our project down for the spring!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
