Billy Belknap and his crew did a fantastic job adding slate to my front walkway, back patio and installed porcelain tile on the wall under the bar in the kitchen. They also did some additional work for me. They add chair railing and board paneling to the foyer and home office areas. These guys turned my imagination into reality, and I will definitely recommend and hire Billy Belknap and his crew again. Great Job!

I am writing to thank you for the wonderful job you and your crew did to restore my mother's home after Hurricane Harvey. Circumstances have been rough for my mother for some time, and the devastation of the hurricane was the last in a series of very difficult events for her. As you can imagine, having her home rebuilt at such an affordable cost and in such a timely manner was a great blessing to our family, and to my mother especially. We were pleased with the high quality of workmanship and your attentiveness. Your communication throughout the process was outstanding, and you were quick to address any question or concern we presented. In addition, we appreciated you offering your professional recommendations where there was a need such as electrical, plumbing, and air duct cleaning. Thank you again for all the hard work, and we look forward to utilizing your company's skills in the future.

I hired QuickenBuild Construction to remodel my home and could not be happier. They were professional from beginning to end and did the job for a very good price compared to other contractors I got quotes from. The remodel was finished in time just like they had estimated.

Xclusive Residential Construction is amazing! I posted my request for a concrete job on thumbtack and within 10 minutes i had an email from the owner Jeffery. Within a day he came out to speak with my husband and I and provided us with a quote. Out of 7 different companies he was the only person to mention placing rebar into our existing patio slab so that the concrete would last longer and not separate. Once we were ready to have this project completed Jeffery and his crew were at our house ready to go in two days! The entire crew was very professional and timely. Within Two days they had dug out all of the dirt, placed rebar down and poured concrete! We are beyond excited to be able to use our new patio space this summer and wouldn't have been able to do it without Exclusive Residential Construction and Remodeling. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who is needing concrete or any other type of home renovation.

They did a great job building my restaurant in Katy. Even with the run around that Fort Bend County caused us, they were still able to cut through the red tape to get our certificate of occupancy and our health permits issued. They provided a great value for the level of work they put into this place compared to other bids I got.

About a year ago, while searching online for a general contractor to renovate a home of mine, I came across Brivenca Builders and decided to take a chance and hire them to do the job. It was a 2600 sq.ft. home in a high rise building and we completely gutted it and rebuilt it. Fast forward one year, and we have now completed three projects together. Edwin and his team are professional, timely, meticulous, and very easy to work with. I have always been able to rely on them to manage, and get the job done, and done right. I have worked with other General Contractors over the years who are a little less expensive, but, I have learned that you get what you pay for, and in many instances, I end up paying more in the long run trying to fix their mistakes. I highly recommend Brivenca to anyone looking for a full service, professional company for their renovation needs.

Artitectural Homes went above and beyond to design and build a unique wine cellar for our new home. I gave them overall requirements of capacity (400 bottles, refrigerated) and location (adjacent to the dining room). They came back with a unique design incorporating glass windows. On time and on budget, and solid suggestions along the way to improve the final result. Our guests are continually amazed at our unique, fine-dining quality wine cellar that has significantly enhanced our home.

I cannot recommend AMA RENOVATION Construction highly enough. After working with a couple of other companies to do some other renovations in my home, I have officially found a company I trust and will continue my business with. I met with John to go over the renovation of my kitchen and from the first meet-up to the final walk through; JC and his team made the entire process smooth and adaptable. Quick and painless. The teams professionalism, attention to detail and thorough communication through the entire process brought quality work and great representation of their company. Such a pleasure to do business with that I'm about ready for them to renovate my next room!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
