Juan did an awesome job and was very professional. I would definitely hire him again. He put down drop cloths and was very careful in how he worked in my home. He looked at other areas that I needed repairs in my home and we are most likely going to use him for other repairs.

Cody was able to come out to my home the very next day after first talking to him to fix a large hole in my wall. He communicated very well about when he would be able to make it to my home for the repair the day of. The repair needed to dry for the weekend so he came back Monday to finish the work in a quick amount of time. Price was very reasonable. Very pleased with the result and will use him for future work in my home. Would definitely recommend.

Called Sweetwater for a clogged drain in the backyard in our new house. We quickly found out it was much more serious when he showed me what he had dug up in the backyard. Unfortunately it needed replaced but was prompt on an estimate and time to come back and repair. Has also helped point out other small things that have been helpful to replace.

What a nice, helpful guy. What I thought was a problem turned out to be such an easy fix that no replacement or repair was needed. If he wanted to, he could have really gouged me and told me I needed repairs or replacement and I wouldn't have been any wiser. Glad there are still good, honest people out there. Will definitely use again!

The guys responded immediately on thumbtack and when I opened up communication I had a appointment set for the following morning. The guys were running a little behind this morning which was not a problem for us because I have family/employees at home. The repair was going to cost more than the washer was worth so we decided to pay the fair price of $40 for the trip visit. Honest business men. I will definitely use them again.

The technician Michael who mounted my televisions was extremely professional and knowledgeable. I moved across town from the Medical Center area to the Woodlands and he saw fit that my televisions were taken down properly with care and remounted at my new home. This company did not initially mount my televisions and I saw a difference between the first and second time I had them mounted. The position of the televisions mounted the second time around were much more comfortable in angle while at a sitting position. The barriers placed in the walls during installation were a much better quality. Great timing and pacing also. He insured no wires were visible, including my cable box, and I didn't even have a shelf. I get questions and compliments every time someone sees my tvs. I'd definitely recommend this company. I'll be using them for now on.

I had to have both my water heaters replaced in the attic of a 2 story home. Ibrahim Flores responded first and asked when I needed this done.....my response was “now...LOL.” Well little did I know he did get on it right then! He was in and out that day....I was impressed and the quote was extremely reasonable. I have his number already saved in my phone and I told a friend of mine that needs some sheet rock repair done, gave her his number. Thank you Ibrahim, I got to take a long HOT shower this morning.

Jay and connnectech are great to work with! They were very willing to work with my schedule and did a great job installing cable and Ethernet in our house we are remodeling. Even after the job I had another need come up and he was able to do the job with less than 24hrs notice. I would highly recommend connnectech for any home wiring needs!

I had a recumbent exercise bike that needed some difficult repairs. Kelvin gave me a fair quote through Thumbtack and made it really easy for me to schedule the work. He arrived exactly when he said he would, was very thorough and friendly, and got the job done faster than I thought was possible. I will definitely call him again for any fitness equipment repairs or installations. Highly recommended. Thank you Kelvin!

The short version: these guys are GREAT! Hire them! The extended version: -The bidding process: they were the quickest, lowest, AND most transparent bidders for this project (I had five contractors bid on sheetrock repair, flooring install, cabinet replacement, painting, and a few other items because we had a pipe release in our attic). -The people: great service personnel, and August is a frequent and clear communicator. -The work: Dennis, the technician who completed our project was conscientious, considerate, and did excellent finish work. We were especially concerned with matching textured ceilings because of where the leak had happened (the kitchen, which is a focal point of our home). The repairs looked seamless and we are very happy with the results! -Invoicing: rapid and transparent (all materials had receipts shown in the invoice document) ... paid online through his secure online application! DEFINITELY will be hiring these guys for future renovations on our home!!! Jason

Walid was extremely professional and detailed oriented. He helped to fix multiple holes in the drywall of the home and painted those areas. Even though initially the paint I got was not a perfect match, he came by the next day to repaint those areas when I finally got the right paint. He is extremely friendly and was a pleasure to work with. If you need any jobs done at your home or business send him a message or give him a call.

I hired Orozco dry wall services to repair a hole in the ceiling caused by me installing floor boards in the attic, I fell right through to my master bedroom. A friend recommended Rodrigo, they showed up, fixed the damage, re-textured the ceiling and painted the whole ceiling. I could not find the repair after it was done! They were ultra clean, organized, and professional from beginning to end. I would recommend them on the spot!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
