Exceeded my expectations! These guys moved me from The Woodlands to the Austin area. I was nervoud because most of their reviews were local to Houston and when the guys showed up to quote us, he didn't come with the fancy iPad app that the others showed up with. He wasn't a broker, but actually one of the guys that would be labor that day. My husband liked it, though, and trusted him. Well our move came in under budget, they were on time, and did a fantastic job with my furniture. They even had to move my stuff into storage and into a small apartment. I highly recommend them!

First choice movers are awesome, hands down I strongly recommend! I had terrible previous experience with hiring cheap labor for moving and ended up paying high hourly money. But first choice movers teams high energy fast moving and organized system gave me hassle free moving and saved me bucks! They lived upto their commitment ! Thumbs up!

Took great care in moving fragiles even though it added more time than expected. Originally quoted rate was upheld and we appreciated the extra effort and care to ensure not just the safety of our belongings but also to not scratch our walls and floors. Overall excellent service

The movers showed up on time, assessed what needed to be moved and got right to work. They were very friendly and professional. Loading took a little longer than I expected, especially considering I don't have a lot of furniture and I had moved 15-20 boxes the night before. Additionally, my one biggest complaint, and it's not really a "complaint", per se, but I thought they should've wrapped some of the furniture better, ie, the dresser and wooden bed frame were only wrapped in plastic, not with a blanket to prevent scratching. Same with the TV stand, which has glass on it, to protect against breaking. The dresser did get dinged, but honestly, it's an Ikea dresser and it was pretty minor in the grand scheme, so no worries. All of that said, as I mentioned, loading took a little longer than I expected, so wrapping the furniture better would've made the process even longer. Next was the 12 mile drive to the new location. I asked if they were able to take toll roads, because that is the fastest route by far, but they said no, which was not a big deal, except it took them almost 45 minutes to go on the surface streets. I took the same route they did and it took me 25 minutes (I understand my car goes a little faster than a truck, but 20 minutes extra is 2x as slow). Is this a big deal? Not really, because it was a short move. Had I been moving a farther distance, this might be a big deal in the time vs. money column. Lastly, the unloading went pretty smooth. The one negative was that they were not putting boxes in the rooms for which they were marked, but again, not a big deal. Overall, I was pleased with the work. Like I said, the guys were prompt, worked hard, and were very friendly, so it was a good experience and I'd recommend them.

The men did a great job, but were over two hours late arriving at the original scheduled time. They were scheduled at 12:30 and did not arrive until about 2:45 and began work at 2:50. They did call to say they were running late, but we had already arrived onsite to wait for them before we got the call. Since they worked on Labor Day, we still appreciated them and would recommend them.

This was my first experience hiring movers and after reading numerous reviews from several different companies, I was really apprehensive about hiring a moving service altogether. I must say though, that using Galactic Movers was a truly great experience from beginning to end. They were responsive to all of my questions prior to me scheduling my move and reassured me that they would do a great job and they did. My moving team was Felipe, George and Alex and they have to be some of the best movers in the city. They worked fast, they were accommodating, and were professional. They had to move all of my things down 3 flights of stairs to load into the truck and then up a staircase into the new place and they did so quickly without damaging anything. There were even a few pieces of furniture that had to be taken apart to fit through a narrow doorway of one of the bedrooms. And again they did so quickly and without damaging anything. I have already referred them to a friend moving soon and will definitely refer them every chance I get.

Did a fantastic job moving me from Houston to Dallas. Showed up first thing in the morning and had my entire apartment loaded up in about 1.5 hrs. They arrived in Dallas without a half hour of me arriving and were equally quick unloading everything. Very friendly, definitely will recommend them to friends and family.

I was looking for a handyman to help me move a 1 BR apt on Jul 28, 2018. Brady responded to my request with his quote. Then, I sent him pics of the furniture to moved, and a week before the move day, we talked over telephone. At that time, given his amazing reviews, he was first choice as a handyman to help me move. As the move day drew closer, for a couple of days, Brady stopped responding. This seemed to be strange as he had been very fast in responding to my text messages beforehand. So, I thought he was no longer interested and started looking for someone else. Then, a day before the move, he responded that he had been out of town. Given his amazing past reviews, as I needed a second handyman to help me move, I hired him as well. On the move day, he arrived on time and moved things cautiously yet efficiently. Regrettably, in our conversation, while he had indicated he had a moving Dolley and moving blankets, on the move day, he did not bring them. All the same, throughout the move, our interactions were pleasant and very friendly. Overall, I appreciated his work ethic and punctuality. Had Brady not have stopped responding to the texts while traveling and brought the moving Dolley and moving blankets, I would have totally given him 5 stars. All the same, moving is always a stressful experience but I was glad to have Brady by my side.

Received a prompt response on service. It was a small job, moving dining table in a house, but we were still treated with professionalism of a larger job. They arrived within the stated arranged time and gave text message updates. They treated the home with respect to not damaging anything and were very courteous with other family members. I'll highly recommend and will be using them again in the future.

I'm so glad that I chose Bellhops for my move. I used the labor option w/o moving truck because I was moving less than 50 ft. from my old apartment to an adjacent unit. The two movers arrived as scheduled and went above & beyond their work duty! One mover helped repair a broken bookshelf that I had planned on throwing away. Alongside the amazing repair, the movers both worked very quickly and efficiently. I cannot praise them enough! Thank you Myles and Eric for making my move so easy!

Mr Betton moved my baby grand piano on Saturday. It was a last minute call and made availability to ensure we could get the piano moved before our deadline. His crew was polite and courteous and moved the baby grand cautiously. I would highly recommend Betton Moving to anyone looking for piano moving services. Thanks for a great job!

I have tried moving on my own and hiring professional moving companies. None seemed any better than the other. Then a friend suggested that we should hire Pick Up Movers. I called them for a quote and the number blew my mind. I didn’t quite know what to expect but what they delivered was amazing. Everything was professional about the movers I got. They arrived on time, worked efficiently around the house and delivered everything in pristine condition. I strongly recommend this company to everyone

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Great Nation Moving and its stellar crew did an absolutely incredible job packing and transporting the contents of our home. The estimate was right on target - down to the dollar and the time of arrival. The crews arrived and moved efficiently and carefully to pack and load the truck under less-than-ideal circumstances (pouring rain). They were very professional and meticulous throughout the move. We really appreciated working with them and will definitely use them in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
