We received 3 estimates for our roof replacement job. Peter Whitman's was the only one that calculated the square footage correctly the first time out. The work was completed quickly within 3.5 days, including removal of two layers of old roofing - composite over wood shingles. He and his crew were friendly and professional at all times. Our property was always protected from falling debris. The cleanup was quick and thorough. We are very happy with the new roof and with Whitman's Contracting and Roofing company!

Stan and his crew are awesome!! They removed my old fence and built a new fence with two gates. They did a beautiful job. My fence looks fantastic. They also did some wood repairs on my house and some landscaping. They did an excellent job. I am really pleased with the way everything turned out. Stan is very punctual, honest and his prices are reasonable. I highly recommend him.

Mr. Rios and his crew were very professional, the job started and ended as stated it would be. the clean up was perfect , not one piece of old roofing or tar paper were left. I've even asked my Rios to quote more jobs for me. he wasn't the cheapest quote but was the most professional.

Les worked for me on three occasions, each time for fairly extensive periods, averaging 2 - 3 months each time. Originally, I wanted to fix up our old place before selling it. The bathrooms were the main area of interest, and he suggested using tile for the lavatories which had originally been done in cultured marble that had yellowed and stained over time. The finished results looked outstanding. When he had completed the majority of the original work, a roof leak following a storm damaged my wooden floors and the ceiling and wall sheetrock upstairs. A few months later, Les returned and re-floored partial sections of two upstairs rooms. The original flooring had been applied with glue, so it was extremely difficult to get the floor level again so that new wood could be laid, but he managed to do so, and the net result was that the new flooring blended in seamlessly. Damage to the ceiling was also repaired expertly. Finally, when we moved into our new place, Les 1) made a number of sheetrock repairs throughout the house, 2) repainted most of the house (2400 sq. feet with several flights of stairs), 3) removed the carpeting and refloored the downstairs bedroom/office using hardwood, and 4) built a custom wall-to-wall (8' wide by 8' high) bookcase in one of the upstairs rooms, and 4) applied an epoxy coating to the garage. I was extremely satisfied with the quality of all of the work and feel confident in saying that Les can take on any challenge given to him. He is also dependable and trustworthy.

The short version: these guys are GREAT! Hire them! The extended version: -The bidding process: they were the quickest, lowest, AND most transparent bidders for this project (I had five contractors bid on sheetrock repair, flooring install, cabinet replacement, painting, and a few other items because we had a pipe release in our attic). -The people: great service personnel, and August is a frequent and clear communicator. -The work: Dennis, the technician who completed our project was conscientious, considerate, and did excellent finish work. We were especially concerned with matching textured ceilings because of where the leak had happened (the kitchen, which is a focal point of our home). The repairs looked seamless and we are very happy with the results! -Invoicing: rapid and transparent (all materials had receipts shown in the invoice document) ... paid online through his secure online application! DEFINITELY will be hiring these guys for future renovations on our home!!! Jason

Excellent service throughout. Very professional and efficient team. The roof installation, siding and porch was schedule for 3 weeks and if was done in two. The roof was completed in only one day, and I was very satisfied with the quality, also I was really happy that they offer a 5-year warranty on the roof. Since the beginning the contract specify the procedures of the work to do, the payment plans, etc. I paid the 3rd part at the beginning, then half when the project was done, and the rest at the end. I would recommend them to friends and neighbors. I'm very please with their work.

Our water heater flooded the house, ruined the wood flooring and most of the sheet rock in the master bedroom. Not only can you not tell anything ever happened (and the wall treatments were venetian plaster) but now we have beautiful stained diamond cut floors. After that we've used Brennan to renovate the master bath and build a 1000 ft patio addition onto our property. Professional, responsive, and fairly priced. Will use him again in the future.

I contracted Mr. Gonzalez to install wood floor at home, as well as painting our living room, dinning room and game room. He was very professional and paid attention to detail. He understood exactly what me and my husband wanted and was very patient in showing us samples. I was impress at the time it took to finish and not to mention the quality of material was amazing. I referred him to all my friends and family.

My 90 hp outboard motor threw a piston ring and I was quoted $5000 by two different marine mechanics. Jim Smith tore down it down, replaced the piston and rings and had her running again in less than two days. Parts cost me less than $300. If you hold the flashlight and keep him in ice cold coca cola, he can replace the starter on a late model Cadillac in under two hours. He rebuilt the electric boat lift motor for my next-door neighbor. Another neighbor's old 1960's home was in need of major updates, In less than three weeks Jim transformed it into a beautiful cedar cabin on the lake. He installed and hard-wired a new hot tub for one of our neighbors, complete with a beautiful wood deck, He custom builds aluminum trailers and has designed and patented a bed mounted lift for his 3/4 ton truck that handles 1500 lbs effortlessly. He's one of those fellas that just doesn't sit still for long,

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
