When hiring a handyman, you never really know what you're going to get. They normally aren't specialists in any specific field. Dan on the other hand really seems to know his stuff. He gets right to work and doesn't stop until the job is done. So far I've had him replace a door, put in a dog door, and hang some overhead storage in my garage. Next up is some painting and a few more projects in the future and we will definitely be hiring Dan again.

We had a great experience with Marco and Galactic Construction! He and his crew went above and beyond expectations to paint the trim and two doors on our house at a very fair price. Marco is the type of company leader who aims to please his customers. He decided to paint an extra coat to ensure that everything looked good, sealed areas that needed it, and cleaned up nicely afterwards. Marco and his crew saw some items that needed repair and offered to do it, but Marco never uncomfortably pressed a sale. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Galactic Construction to family, friends and neighbors.

Rene and his crew did a great job! They removed and replaced the attic access door in our garage. The one we had ordered was actually the wrong size and they took care of finding the correct one and helping with the exchange. Rene went above and beyond by sealing up some additional cracks in our garage ceiling as well as repairing the ceiling where it was damaged from the previous door trim. Communication, quality of the work and cleanliness of the work area after they left were all great. I will definitely call Rene and his crew again the next time we need some work done.

Derby built a roof over an existing deck that had to be gabled. He came up with a workable solution at a reasonable price and completed the work on time and at the agreed price. Very satisfied and will hire again.

Chris did a fantastic job and was very reasonable in price. I needed several small things done and he was very accommodating in agreeing to get the materials and arrange comfortable times to do the work. He furnished the labor and material. Repaired a fence post, , installed new dryer vent, caulked sixteen windows, removing and replacing solar screens to do so. He sealed and painted spots on upstairs ceiling and down stairs rooms, painted the front door, garage door jamb and replaced sweeps on storm doors. I highly recommend him and look forward to his doing two rooms of tile for me in October.

Andy responded promptly, communicated well, got here when he said he would, and did a great job. On top of that, he patiently let me bend his ear for advice on buying a truck. Thank you, Andy, for eliminating my concerns about theft.

Nolan did an excellent job of building a custom frame from square steel tubing to support a new granite countertop for our outdoor kitchen. The top required additional support and a slight rise in elevation in order to work for the granite slabs. Nolan was very professional and did the work quickly and within a very reasonable budget. His measurements of what we needed resulted in an excellent fit for the countertop. His metal working skills are very good!

I had a nice/newer home that was not selling due to some functional and cosmetic issues. Don expertly advised me on issues that needed functional fixes/improvements as well as how to enhance the curb-appeal. He did this with my limited budget carefully in mind to ensure that money put in the home would be returned through a quick and higher sales price. His work included adding a garage entry to the home, floor tile, retaining wall, gravel driveway, cement walkway, landscaping, shutters, painting and a few other items. The record rains also impacted the work, but Donald worked through the challenges per the budget and plans. I highly recommend Texas Classic Custom Homes & Remodeling and will not hesitate to use them again for construction and remodeling needs.

Alan has done many jobs for me from little things like changing my furnace filter to adding wood flooring in my attic, building cabinets for storage in my garage and helping with hardscaping my patio and building a fence. He is very reliable, which is a rare thing in Austin these days. It's nice to know you have someone you can rely on to show up when they say they will, and do quality work / give you what you paid for!

Quick response. An estimate was provided from pictures so they didn't have to charge for a service call. Repairmen were out in 2 days and completed the job very quickly. They also checked the rest of the roof to ensure there weren't any other issues. I would definitely call them again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
