Jon was so great to work with. He was extremely professional, fair and responded very fast. His communication was awesome, which I really appreciate. We asked him to help us organize our garage, and he went above and beyond. Everything is put up neatly, and the tools are organized by type and brand. He even blew the garage out and drive way, without being asked. I'm really looking forward working with him on additional projects in the future, we found our new handyman!

I used this company for several projects on the outside of my house and garage. They were fast, efficient, very careful with their carpentry and painting, and eager to do the job correctly. I found Bobby very responsive whenever I shared a concern with him about any facet of the job. I would absolute recommend this company for any work within their capacity!

Austin's Greater Garage Doors were great. My garage door broke and my vehicle was stuck inside. Austin's Greater Garage Doors came out early the next day and repaired the door for a great price.

Needed to get my garage door and the master bedroom & bathroom repainted. Had been years since the last time it was painted and Scott and his team did an outstanding job. They kept me informed from start to finish and I found their estimate to be the best price out of a handful of other estimates. Thanks!

Okay so the job I asked for was admittedly simplified, but when Bill and Tony showed up they immediately sized up the job and began work immediately. They removed the existing cabinets and placed them in my garage for later use. Then they installed the new light fixtures, patched and painted the wall and installed the new cabinets. I was impressed at this point, but when the Master Electrician came to inspect the electrical work, I was amazed! My wife is so happy with the work that I have been given permission to hire Fixed again to install the old cabinets in my garage! Stay tuned, guys! And great touch with the door mat and shoe covers! That was the icing on the cake for my wife! Thank again!

Matt was excellent to work with. I had him paint all of my interior doors, frames, window wills, and baseboards/trim. He responded to my request very quickly and was available almost immediately to start work. He communicated very well and made sure we were on the same page about the project. He is knowledgeable and took the time to explain things to me when I had questions. Matt was very accommodating and arrived very early before I left for work (as I requested) and stayed late (until I got home from work). He would bring food so he could work mostly uninterrupted and so he didn't have to leave my house unlocked during the day. He payed attention to detail, taped off appropriate areas, covered furniture, etc and cleaned up the mess as much as possible. When he finished, he had me go around the whole house and inspect to make sure I was completely happy with his work and he touched up any areas I requested. I still have one more door that needs to be installed before he can paint it and he offered to come back and paint it within a timely fashion. All in all, Matt is very friendly, trustworthy, and hard-working with reasonable prices. He made the process as easy as possible and I would definitely hire him again.

I hired Derek to do some repairs on an older home. From replacing a light fixture, vent fan, repairing and installing screen doors, a small paint job that required some wood repair as well. I was very pleased with his work. Whenever we have done work on this house we have always run into some issue because of it's age. He ran into problems trying to replace the vent fan in the kitchen. It had the original (1940) fan, and because of the plaster walls could not get a new one to fit. Rather than just say it won't work, he managed to repair the original one, which I thought was great! He consulted me on the new things I wanted installed and saved us all time by picking things up at Home Depot himself. He was on time and communicated very well at the end of each day. I would highly recommend him and plan on using him in the future!

Tree limbs damaged shingles on the roof of my house and garage. The estimate for the repairs was very reasonable. Dulce and Manuel did a great job of matching the replacement shingles to the original ones. Manuel discovered some other tree damage which he repaired at no additional cost. I would definitely use Dulce and Manuel again and recommend them to friends.

we had a roof that had been leaking for years on house and detached garage. turned out that the decking as well as shingles had to be replaced. they tackled this with aplomb and got the job done expertly IMHO. having some experience in construction and roofing I am confident this job will outlast me . I was unable to use my insurance ( USAA ) because I let it go way too long, and it did amount to a tidy sum--so take my advice and get your roof updated as soon as possible.. it will never be any cheaper!

Bobby Fiske has been helping me for several years now. He is wonderful and efficient help. He is always prompt and ready to go. He never wastes time and always finishes up my list I give him when he arrives. His charges are reasonable especially for the top quality of work he exhibits. I have found Bobby to be knowledgable in any thing I need him to do. Even before I had a heart attack about a year ago and he made my life so much easier in all the repairs he has done - fixing my sliding glass doors, making a small gate in my garage to keep my dogs from getting out, repairing my linoleum floors and he has fixed my plumbling, built book shelves, helping to organize my garage, yard work, cleaned my swimming pool, installed water faucets, repaired my bathtub water outlets, repaired, patched and painted outside squirrell holes in my house, caulked windows, checked and aired up my car tires, replaced and/or charged car batteries, installed a water pump in my bird bath, carried numerous heavy items for me from room to room, (and also repaired my handywoman mistakes) to name a just a very few of the things he has helped me with over the years. I've found that I can call him for anything at any time. Except for electrical work there is hardly an area he doesn't know about and if he doesn't he know about it he will research it and learn about it. I can't even begin to list everything he has done (and done well) around my house and property over the last four or so years. And I have trusted him enough to ask him for his good and thoughtful advise about many household repairs and similar matters on many occasions. He is always pleasant and cheerful and, best of all, trustworthy in any area of my house. He returns my calls or emails quickly and follows up whenever needed. I was so fortunate the day I found his business card on the bulletin board at True Grits in Jonestown years ago. I will continue to hire Bobby for as long as I have things for him to do around my house and property and will always consider him as a friend. A final note: on top of all his professional help he helped me one day by giving me a ride to the pharmacy when I couldn't drive after an auto accident, and, even after I kept insisting, he wouldn't take any gas money or payment for his time and trouble even though I knew he was losing valuable work time and income. Alliance Overhead Door were equally knowledgeable in garage door services compared to the other companies that gave me quotes, but were the quickest to respond and gave me the best quote. I needed a garage door opener installed and the extension spring converted to a torsion spring. Positives: Fast response, good price, easy scheduling. Chris and Robert are both super nice, helpful guys. Chris has garage door openers on hand that were backwards-compatible to program both garage door openers to. Negatives: Robert forgot to call before arriving for our scheduled service time, but luckily I was already at home so we didn't miss each other. The door cables unraveled after one day, but Robert was able to come immediately and fix it for us.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
