We hired Mike initially to install several ceiling fans but ended up having him hang 3 of those, 1 chandelier, 2 sets of bay window curtains and mount our new 70 inch TV. He got it all done in one day, pricing was very reasonable and he is coming back in two weeks to remodel two of our walk in closets. Thanks Mike, we are glad to have found you!

Wonderful work experience. Mustafa worked tirelessly for two days to build a play structure for my children. I never looked out the window and didn't see him working; not even for a drink or a snack. I was extremely impressed by his work ethic. He is methodical and logical and completed the work far quicker than I believe others would have done so. He actually argued me down on the number of hours he had worked and was extremely honest and forthcoming. I hope others are lucky enough to have him work on their projects because he is a huge asset

I have hired Ashcroft Home Services 3 times now and more to come! It is a family run business and everyone I have met is nice, hardworking, and courteous. First for cleaning, Mario showed up on time and was very meticulous. I provided a list of things to be cleaned and he was very thorough. When I returned after work he was even scraping the paint spots the painters had left on my floor before mopping (this was not on the list). He dusted the whole doors not just the edges, etc. I was very pleasantly surprised. Next, I hired them for packing and moving. Once again, they were very meticulous. 3 people came and packed. I had a large bar with many bottles of liquor and bitters. And all types of wine/cocktail glasses as a true connoisseur would. They carefully wrapped every bottle and glass taking extra care with the thinner more fragile glasses. I have almost completely unpacked the kitchen and nothing was broken. Lastly, I hired Mario to help with painting back my apartment. The walls look great. He took great care around the edges and ceiling. He also offered to help install a light fixture I couldn’t install because of giant holes where the screws should go. I’m so glad I found this business! They have been a huge help in this process of moving into my first home!

I hired Angel to fix the roof on a section of my house, replace 2 outside doors, add room in the kitchen for a dish washer, fix wood rot on a window frame, and fix a broken window. Angel had amazing quality for his work, and every task I had turned out great. The only issue I had is that Angel was unable to account for the full scope of the project, which caused an increase in our original agreed cost as well as delay in final completion.

Had MAJOR dog scratches on our front mahogany glass door. Timothy not only sanded it down but even stained it the exactly the same color. Tim saved us almost 1000 by not needing to replace our front door. He was thoughtful and knowledgable and most importantly a person you can trust ! I have NO PROBLEM in recommending him to anyone and a great contact to have. Thanks again Timothy !!

Jon did a great job! I had him install curtain rods for 6 different sizes of windows. He was very thorough and precise in his work. I also had him put up a wall hanging that required a two story ladder to do it. Everything turned out perfect. I will definitely use Jon again.

I live in Georgia but my house needed repairs in Texas. I hired M and Y because I had hail damage to my windows and I need to sell my (rental) house ASAP. They ended up painting the exterior of my house (3200 square feet), replacing rotted wood trim, and glazing my windows. It looks great!! Once I hired him online, they began working right away. They pressure washed the first day and let it dry. Within 2 days, the complete job was finished. They finished before I made it to Texas! I would definitely use this company again.

What can I say about Bud? Not only is he an outstanding handyman, he's a man of his word and has become a friend after all the work I had him do at my house I bought about six months ago. First off, I was just looking for someone to install a custom fence in my front yard. I wanted mid-century breeze blocks to make columns for the fence and he helped with the design with the number that we had to work with and figured out what kind of paint we needed to get the color correct, as the brick was just absorbing the color and it wasn't turning out at all what it was supposed to be, but he figured it out, using a different type of paint, to achieve the correct color! It is a very nice, high-end-looking fence now. I am extremely pleased and get tons of compliments on it! He knew exactly what he was doing and the fence not only looks fantastic, but it is sturdy and excellent quality! He also did all the painting of the rooms I wanted painted in my house and did a beautiful job of painting my kitchen cabinets a gorgeous mint green color! He also installed my beautiful chrome mid-century hardware on the cabinets, too. He painted my fireplace and installed beautiful, funky mod-looking tiles in front of the fireplace, which when the people flipped the house before I moved in, they put the hardwood floors all the way to the edge of the fireplace, which was a fire hazard. So, I found these tiles at Ikea and he and I lined them up in the design and pattern that we wanted and I got to pick out the grout color I thought looked best, too. Once again, quality work from Bud!! We also did some accent paint colors on the exterior of my home, some of which were his idea, and that turned out beautifully, too. I purchased a very cool mid-century door with 3 diamond-shaped reeded windows going down the center and starburst doorknob and he installed the door perfectly and painted it also. I'm very pleased with it. He installed a few rain gutters in the front and back of house and custom painted those to match trim. I'm also very pleased with those. He also shared with me that he made a cage in another person's garage and a kitty door for the cats to have their litter boxes in the garage. I thought that was a brilliant idea and had him build one for me. It turned out really pretty, too, as we used turquoise for the wood color for the sides and the wood lid. He used galvanized steel for the pin and it is very sturdy. Bud worked quickly and efficiently and always showed up when he said he was going to. He even developed a relationship with my dog, two kittens, and cat! He was always talking to them while he was working and sometimes they would get in his way, but that didn't bother him, as he is an animal lover! I highly recommend him to anyone needing any kind of handyman work. I'll use him again and again and am so happy I found someone like Bud. It's just amazing that I was looking for someone to build a custom fence and I got someone who could do everything I needed! Don't hesitate to use Bud!

We hired Henson Home Solutions, LLC to do an extensive remodel of our home including new windows and trim, painting the entire interior, changing square room openings to beautiful archways, replacing all interior doors, adding ceiling lights to our dark living room and kitchen, installing beautiful barn doors between two bedrooms, and a total redo of our small outdated bathroom to make it look exactly like a picture I had fallen in love with. That included a beautiful tiled walk in shower that we just love. Henson Home Solutions is a great company to work with and we couldn't be happier with their work or give them a higher recommendation.

What good fortune to have found KGK Home Improvements! I'm doing an extensive remodel on an older house and was dreading working with a dozen different contractors when I met Kyle and his crew. There has literally been no project they haven't been able to do from the flooring (magnificent mahogany), a custom stone wall in my bathroom, painting perfection, and beautiful custom built-in bookcases. They're also the best window and door installers in town and Kyle performs wizardry with trim. Most importantly to me as a homeowner, this is an HONEST crew (rare, right?) and they have NEVER charged me a dollar over their estimate....unheard of! 5 STARS ALL THE WAY FOR THIS COMPANY!!!

We recently downsized homes to a zero lot line neighborhood and the immediate drawback for us was the amount of outside noise we heard all throughout the day (dogs, trucks, neighbors, etc). The home is only 8 years old but all the windows were builder-grade and the sound control was horrible. Upon researching options I came across Graceland and spoke with the owner, Jacob Boone, and he recommended I go with a specialty glass they offered called "Hero Glass", which is a laminated dual-pane glass package. The results have been dramatic. With our old windows we could hear every little nuance outside, we now have to look out the window to see if it's even raining!! Jacob was the consummate professional through it all, the windows delivered as promised, and the installers did an excellent job. We definitely recommend Graceland for any sort of window replacement project.

We are thrilled with our new windows. Everyone who worked on the project were pleasant, efficient, and accommodating. We could not have asked for more. Rowland was outstanding in his management of the job. He anticipated our needs and responded positively and in a timely manner to every request we had. He delivered more than was expected and agreed to. His honesty and concern for our interests exceeded all our expectations.

Sky-Lan did a very professional job of painting the exterior of our two-story home. Several neighbors have seen the quality of work and requested bids for their homes. The owner, Skylar Landry, was on the job site every day which allowed me to make some changes in how I wanted the window trim to be painted. Overall, I found Sky-Lan to be an excellent company to work with.

I got a few quotes for the complete exterior facelift we did for a very old house. These guys were competitive in their pricing and did great work. They were able to anticipate (and prepare me) for likely scenarios for the home. We had the existing siding and windows removed, new windows and doors, added insulation, new siding and paint on the whole house and a little room in back. They started when they said they were going to start and finished pretty much on time and on budget. (Thank goodness b/c the rain from Harvey started the next day). I enjoyed working with Mike, the siding and window leads (both Steve's) - all communicate well and were responsive to questions I had during the process. I'd use them again and I can recommend them without reservation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
