Whole house interior painting including popcorn ceiling removal as well as painting kitchen cabinets. Good and efficient crew with reasonable pricing. Ms. Ross, the owner has design background and excellent advice on what works well in color selections. Very good attention to detail. In addition to painting, she produced a very competitive bid for tiling ~740 sq feet 12x24 of floor tiles. The tiling crew she provided installed the tile first with good preparation then installed tiles with very fine grout lines as requested. Overall, very impressed and would hire again for future work.

I don't know where to start first. Allison is amazing! She has worked with me the past two weekends organizing my 2nd floor after a total remodel. She does it all. She helps you decide what to keep and what to donate or trash, gives interior design help, organizes personal filing systems for your paperwork and she will keep a lookout for furniture for a redesign to meet your budget. I have never had fun doing this dreaded job and have avoided it for years! Allison makes it fun and keeps me on task. Allison is professional and worked fast moving things around and reorganizing my closets, dresser drawers, linen closets and rooms. If you always wanted that high-end look on a budget or you have a larger buget and know what you want, she can help you design your space perfectly. I can't recommend her enough. She is not done at my home. I want all of my house organized including the garage. I plan on having her back to keep me on track! Allison is very talented and has many tips and ideas from her years of experience. Do yourself a favor and make an appointment with her. Just leave some time for me! I am not giving her up.

We hired Murphy to consult on all the details of our home renovation, including picking out materials, flooring, paint colors, lighting, and furniture. She was incredibly helpful in navigating the hundreds of options that are out there for each item, and steered us towards selections that were true to our original vision for the house. Murphy is very easy going, straightforward, and fun to work with. And her design sense is incredible! We would absolutely recommend Murphy for any interior design or decorating job.

I wish there were more stars to give, because 5 does not seem enough for Suzanna. I had never worked with an interior designer before, and honestly, I was a little intimidated by the whole process of finding somebody. I had talked to designers who had outrageous budget minimums in order to just speak to them! Suzanna is extremely easy to work with -- in terms of money AND and especially in terms of design! My husband and I just moved into a new construction home, and once we got our stuff moved in, realized we needed to start from scratch. It was blank slate, and we had no direction. Within days of finding Suzanna on Thumbtack, she came over to check out our house. We were mostly focused on our living/dining area. The minute she walked in the door, I knew I was going to hire her. She is so warm and easy to talk to...i knew she would be able to take my ideas and use her expertise to create the perfect space. She's an artist, and her eye is impeccable! Within 24 hours or so she sent me a "mood board" mock up of her suggested ideas for our room, and it was beyond anything we ever imagined. She took into account our budget, any gift cards we had, and found us items that were affordable and combinations I would have never chosen had I set out to do this on my own. I literally feel like I have the living/dining area of my dreams, and it was within budget! Suzanna will work with you by the hour (and her rate is extremely reasonable compared to other hourly rates...especially considering she is MUCH more talented she is than any other designer I've seen) OR she will give you a flat rate. Simple and easy. She even came in a little under the hourly rate she originally given. She makes you feel as if you are her only client - always sending me links to great deals on craigslist, or links to other sales online. I just can't say enough about Suzanna. If you want your home to be beautiful, stylish, and unique (and done on a reasonable budget) please hire her!!

Hanniel is a ton of fun to work with! She mad what my husband and I thought was going to be a stressful project into a fun one. We really enjoyed working with her to design our bland place. She not only found great furniture pieces, she also made sure it was a good deal and affordable. She was very sensitive to our tight budget. In the end, she did an amazing job and went above and beyond our expectations. Not only does our home look AMAZING, it's also super comfortable and cozy. We now love coming to our beautiful home. Using Hanniel as our interior designer was the best decision! I recommend her without hesitation. Thanks Hanniel!

Bhavani was hired to help refurbish an old home. She drove from Austin to Houston to see the home, take measurements. She then provided drawings for demo work, lighting, kitchen redesign, paint colors. She continued to answer questions throughout the process and provide additional drawings for items that came up. The house is looking great, already have some buyers and renters asking about it and its still not finished.

Toni McWilliams’ insight into property buyers led to the successful sale of my condo. Within a few hours of her arrival, Toni had transformed my condo into exactly what an investor in the Roaring Fork Valley looks for. She started by identifying key living spaces and arranged the existing furniture to best enhance the space’s features. With a few extra touches of her own, my condo went from looking rather small and lived-in to very polished and chic. I was impressed by Toni’s knowledge of the real estate market, her undeniable talent for interior design, and her professional, positive attitude. I sought Toni when I knew I needed every edge I could find to sell my condo during a time when the market was saturated. Shortly thereafter, my condo sold for over 10% higher than comparable units within my building. She provided me with a huge return on investment and I simply can't thank her enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
