Tammi is amazing with my dogs and cat! I have a 15yo Persian who can be a challenge but Tammi was able to give him a great cut with very little stress on him. The dogs loved her! I will definitely continue to use Tammi for my fur babies going forward!

Wonderful! Very Knowledgeable regarding care of my dog, and very kind as she positioned her extremities in order to clip them fully. Bella was very matted, and she took her time with her. She was punctual, and I have already made another appointment. Best experience I have ever had, plus she came into my home. My ability to get around is compromised and I feel so blessed to have found someone to come into my home that does such a beautiful job.

They were super friendly and lovely with my little pup. It was his first grooming so I was very grateful for her patience. They also bring little homemade dog treats for new customers, which my little guy loved.

Jazzmine is the consummate professional. She was on time, polite, is open to what the customer wants, responds to the needs of each dog, has a strong attention to detail, but most importantly to me, she put my dogs at ease quickly. I have 2 Cotons and Jazzmine not only provided them with a quality groom, but also with a positive experience. One of my dogs is on the anxious side and Jazzmine was very patient with her and put her at ease. She also finished their styles with super cute and high quality accessories. I plan to hire Jazzmine whenever I can.

Christy did a fantastic job grooming our goldendoodle puppy, Ollie! He is our family's first dog and this was his first grooming. He liked her right away and she spent time getting to know him and answering all our questions. He looked great when she was done! We will be using Handsome Hound again soon.

Peace4Paws did an amazing job at a fantastic price! Emily was super friendly and took great care of my dog. She sent several photos and update texts each visit - going as far as hand feeding her when she wouldn't eat. Emily even picked up my mail and offered to cleanup the dog hair. My older dog doesn't do well when I have to be away - this is the first time I have and she hasn't lost weight and seemed her normal self. I'm a fan and will definitely rehire.

Karen has been our go-to pet sitter for years! Our boys, two Australian shepherds, love her and we know that when she is here, we have nothing to worry about. We love that we can leave our dogs at home where they are most comfortable and not worry about leaving them in a kennel away from everyone and everything they know. Karen truly loves animals and has a soft spot for our doggies - it's clear by the way they act when she comes over! Recently, one of our dogs got out and was lost. Karen was so upset by this news that she personally went out looking for him. In the end, she is the one who found him and rushed him to the vet after he was hit by a car. He is doing great now and we are so thankful to have someone like her who cares so deeply for our fur babies.

Karen has been taking care of my three cats and one dog for years. She is better than outstanding - lets my cats out to play in the backyard where they can't escape and then returns to let them back in. She brushes them, feeds them, takes care of the litter box. My sweet dog is a special needs dog; Karen loves Cali and takes extra special care of her. Karen is my neighbor and often just comes over and takes Cali for a walk or just checks on the animals even when I am in town. Does Karen go above and beyond? Absolutely! Karen couldn't do better as she is already the best!

Rachel was the best. She kept me up to date with how the dogs were doing along with a video and pics. Rachel and her boyfriend were very nice and treated my dogs like their own, which is all I could ask for. She was very accommodating with our schedule for pick-up and drop-off. I felt totally relaxed leaving my dogs in her care. I will absolutely be calling her in the future for any dog sitting needs. (on a side note my 4yr daughter liked it there so much when we dropped the dogs off she kept asking to go back)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

  • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
  • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
  • Wash and dry: $60
  • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
