Nita & Steven are a delight and very dependable & trustworthy. They have done various jobs for me on a regular basis since April, 2014, including home repairs, minor plumbing, & painting; installing a flagstone path, an underground gutter drainage line, and a tree root barrier system; and general yard cleanup. I'm so lucky to find them!

We really enjoyed the work from Perfect Frames. To put it plain, Adam and Micheal exceeded expectations at all facets. Their work was thorough and their attitudes were very pleasant. I would consider that we had a very large job as it consisted of over 40 pieces and several big mirrors hung. We also had a few paintings that required reframing. We needed their help on where and how to hang several pieces. Our collection included everything from large pieces in excess of 8 ft long to small 4" x 6" frames that we wanted in an equally spaced array. All were done professionally and in timely order. All of the work that I had was completed in one day - except for the framing which they took with them to complete. As far as framing, they created as shadow box for some clothing items like uniforms and jackets that we wanted to display. We also had some paintings reframed to better match the home. Perfect Frames also repaired a special frame that I had in with some elements had broken off. They had to dismantle the frame and the sealed backing just make the repair and then assemble everything back. They did great. So if you are in the market for a service that they provide, you should seriously consider them. They do good work, are pleasant to be around and are trustworthy.

Sam came to my house to replace Kitchen Garbage Disposer and performed excellent work. He is also knowledgeable in many other trades. He also fixed Valves for my Sprinkler System which was an unplanned ad hoc request from me. He even went to hardware store to get the needed parts for repair. I also asked him questions related to other issues I had in the house with plumbing and electrical and he provided some suggestions to guide me in the right path for next step. I highly recommend his service.

Joel was awesome! He asked detailed questions about the project before coming out, and was ready to complete everything when he got here. He got it all done quickly and easily. He's nice, well-qualified in several areas of home repair/remodeling, and is reasonably priced. Great experience and now I will be referring him to all of my Real Estate clients for their jobs too.

Showed up on time and quickly got to work on the issue. Although I thought the diagnostic fee went toward the repair, I was still happy with the quick fix and labor rate (+ diagnostic fee). Husband was really happy with the work. I would hire again.

We are extremely pleased with the quality service provided (water main repair for a leak)! We got a response with a reasonable bid within a few minutes of posting the request offering to come out immediately despite the fact that I posted the request in the evening. Ivan and Karina were both very professional, knowledgeable, and kind. They even came out after their regular workday had ended because we were going to be without water over the holiday. It was a great experience, and we couldn't be more pleased. Thank you for making our day! We highly recommend them!

On time, Knowledgeable and Excellent service! I asked Clay to look at my dishwasher to see if it could possibly be repaired. He diagnosed the problem, researched the part that I needed, and when the part arrived, Clay had my dishwasher working in no time!! But he couldn't stop there. Clay was asked to look at another project on my to-do list that very day. I needed someone with the know-how to set up my new Smart Television. The television was set up, functional and the box that it came in was moved from my living room to the dumpster! Clay's follow up days after his assistance was a nice touch to his service of quality which is seldomly done. I'd call on Clay Morris again when there's more to do around my home!

Guillermo was on time, understood what we needed help with. He thoroughly troubleshot the issue and gave a fair estimate to make the repairs. He was on site exactly when he said he would arrive. I would use his services again.

Great value. He took time to repair my sheetrock right. He put plastic on the carpet, did a couple "extra value" things beyond the agreed-on scope, and was polite. You can trust this guy.

We had a short window to repair drywall damage in our bathroom in order for our plumber to but our bathroom back together after finding/fixing a leak. R&T was able to fit our project into the schedule quickly. They were ontime for the work and completed the job in a bit over an hour, including texturing. The repair blends in naturally with the rest of the wall.

The project was precisely quoted and he helped us stay on schedule and we successfully remodeled our entire kitchen in about 2 weeks! Overall we love the work that was done and would highly recommend them to anyone looking to do any home renovation projects!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
