To any music lover and student of music who's looking to learn how to play guitar the right way, DFW Rock Guitar Academy is your destination! Jon is an enthusiastic guitar professional who can help you achieve all of your goals playing guitar. His passion for playing is contagious and he possesses all the knowledge and skills of a great player and an extraordinary teacher. He knows how to make you feel comfortable and is in no way intimidating. He's got a great personality and can adapt his instruction to suit the needs of a seasoned guitar veteran to someone who is picking up a guitar for the first time. Being a beginner myself, Jon made the process very easy for me to follow and provided me with the encouragement and positive reinforcement that I needed to get past the challenges I had. He sets high expectations and, if you put in the practice, you will surpass any of the goals you have for yourself. I went from not knowing any basic notes to being able to play some of my favorite songs in no time. Seeing the results of your hard work pay off is a great motivator and confidence booster. If your looking to maximize your potential playing guitar, Jon Chorba is the man to see!

I first contacted Mark after seeing an online advertisement for piano lessons in the Addison area. I mentioned to him that I was interested in learning piano and had absolutely no knowledge of piano, although I did have a background in music as a vocalist and trombonist for a band in college. He cheerfully followed up with me and had me come in to the piano gallery for a preview lesson, introducing me to the basics and making recommendations on keyboards and music. After only a few months of lessons I was on my way to a newly discovered passion. Mark has been instrumental in advancing my musical abilities and has been extremely flexible in scheduling lessons, as well as very adaptable to my abilities.

Brandon and Jackie were such an amazing addition to our wedding!! We were very casual and fairly unorganized, but they brought talent and professionalism to make our big day even more special!! There were compliments galore from guests on "our" music choice, which Jackie and Brandon completely picked themselves. If we could get married again we would definitely hire them! Thank you both for being so laid back and flexible!!

We found Greg on Thumbtack and went to see him at Sheps in Weatherford while searching for a band for our wedding! Greg was super nice and he entertained the crowd that was there. The entire time he stayed in contact with us while we were picking songs for our wedding. At the wedding he was prompt and went over the top to make it special. I really liked the special song he learned for us and played at our table! It was definitely a night to remember and everyone had good compliments after! I highly recommend him for any event!

I can’t say enough good things about the band! Their energy was contagious and it got the party going! My family is still talking about them and how great they sounded. No one wanted to leave the party until after they stopped playing. They were open to requests and even let my uncle and brother in law sing a family favorite! We had such a great time and highly recommend them to anyone. We will be booking them again in the future - great work!

Travis worked with me on the recording of two albums as a session guitarist. His work employed technicalities that helped shape the future of my band's work. These albums have secured an 8 week tour, and my playing as an experienced guitarist has been influenced by Travis' input. If I could, I would practice with Travis regularly.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
