Tim and his assistant did a tremendous job staining a pergola on my back patio. Couldn't have been happier with his service and the final result. Thanks!

I first met Jose when I hired him as a furniture assembler. He came to my office assembled 2 office furnitures which was very difficult. Took him about 6hrs. Did a great job with a great price. I then hired Jose again with his partner Alberto to assemble a pergola from Sams Club, very huge project which they completed in a day, they also had time to assemble my basketball court. Again great job. I will have another review for Jose and his partner Alberto because they did renovations with my living room. I must have hire Jose over 10 times in a 6 month period

I am very pleased with my experience with Earth Concepts. Chase was attentive to what I wanted for my porch and what my budget was and helped me come up with a pergola that would work for my needs. He and his crew arrived when they said they would and completed the work in a very timely fashion. I also loved all the extra work he did for me( power washing my porch) to ensure my new pergola looked fantastic when it was in place.

Jake designed our back garden, which was an unusable space, and turned it into an outdoor room which we practically live in. He decked the garden, fenced it and built a water feature, a barbecue area and a pergola. It is fabulous and all our friends rave about it. As a result he was asked to do other work for friends. In addition, he project managed our new upstairs bathroom. he did all the base carpentry work such as new walls and skirting boards and project managed the plumbing, tiling and electricals. We absolutely love it. The quality of the work is outstanding. It was also much more cost effective than getting a bathroom specialist to do it. I would not hesitate to get Jake again to do some work for us but unfortunately he has left the country....but fortunate for the USA.

Fantastic deck and pergola. Very professional and prompt... We should've put in the artificial turf like William recommend because it would've looked amazing... Calling them back in 6 months for that.

Bill is incredible. He was able to do exactly what I wanted. Always on time and kept me in the loop during the project. I’m very happy with the finished product and hope to add a photo when I finish painting the wood on the pergola....

Our experience with Allscapes was wonderful. We are delighted with our Pergola. Wade was very thorough with all aspects of the project and we feel we got a good product for a very fair price. I will recommend Allscapes to anyone looking for decks, pergola or outdoor structures.

Martin has worked on several projects in my house including building an entire, custom designed pergola, sturdy garage shelves, and he turned my game room into a recording studio. He puts a lot of care into his work and he takes pride in his work. He's a hard worker and he's meticulous in his work. I can't recommend him enough.

I had John & his team remove an old 16'x16' wooden deck, install a concrete patio in the same footprint (with rebar), build a 13'x13' pergola with built-in bench seating, and build an enclosure for my gas grill. It came out beautifully and I am now able to comfortably use my backyard. I really could not be happier with the result. John did a great job helping me turn my ideas into reality. By the time I was able to get HOA approval I was running out of time to get the work done before my dad's big 90th birthday party, thinking we wouldn't have the backyard to use for it ... John made sure it was completed prior to the party & everyone loves the new patio/pergola. I appreciated the team expediting the work. I got 4 quotes for this work, and while John was not the least expensive, I could tell he has attention to detail and my gut feeling when I met him was that he is honest and would get the job done to my satisfaction. That was indeed the case. I will be using John's company for further work I have in mind for my home. I highly recommend Capital Construction Services.

Jim replaced a patio door, removed and replaced old and crumbling logs around a raised plant bed, and built a large, very attractive patio deck for me. This is the only job he has done for me, but I would definitely call him again for any work I would need. He worked with me on choosing materials and on getting the deck just right. He is a man of integrity who does excellent work for a fair price. He works quickly, keeps to a time schedule, and cleans up everything at the end. You can't go wrong working with Jim! I have not worked with anyone else who was as concerned as Jim about me being completely satisfied with the job.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
