Manny was great and easy to work with. I hired him to install mirrors and flooring in our garage to convert to a home gym. The mirrors are professional gym quality and the flooring looks great! He even did me a favor and hung a curtain rod at no charge. I would definitely hire him again!

I had them fix two giant holes in my garage ceiling, which had been there for years. I never got around to fixing it because it was far too daunting to handle myself, and too expensive to have someone else do it. I had received a few bids over the years, and they were all well outside of my budget. Finally, the time had come where I couldn't put it off any longer, and I'm so glad that I chose Handyman Walls to handle the project. They were fast, they did phenomenal work, and the price was extremely reasonable. I am beyond impressed, and will think of them first the next time I have a drywall project. I highly recommend them.

Okay so the job I asked for was admittedly simplified, but when Bill and Tony showed up they immediately sized up the job and began work immediately. They removed the existing cabinets and placed them in my garage for later use. Then they installed the new light fixtures, patched and painted the wall and installed the new cabinets. I was impressed at this point, but when the Master Electrician came to inspect the electrical work, I was amazed! My wife is so happy with the work that I have been given permission to hire Fixed again to install the old cabinets in my garage! Stay tuned, guys! And great touch with the door mat and shoe covers! That was the icing on the cake for my wife! Thank again!

Job consisted of repairing cracked drywall in the garage ceiling, removing popcorn from the ceiling in garage , painting ceiling, replace (repaint trim), and replace(repaint) old rotted wood on Breakfast Nook located on the exterior of my rental property. Received a estimate from another gentleman and the estimate was over $2700.00 Mr. Matthews quoted me an estimate far below the $2700.00. Work was very professional and took less than 2 days to complete. Mr. Matthews and his assistant was very knowledgeable on the project. I appreciated his honesty and fairness with me. I strongly recommend this company to anyone. He could have charged me much more but he didn't. That's called caring for your client and he will be my regular repair person for now on. Thank you Thumbtack for the great lead. Very happy with the work. Spot on work.

Absolutely STELLAR service. Liz and Rene treat your home like their own - they are super friendly, patient, flexible, and responsible. They even helped me out on a couple minor things they didn't have to do, like unclogging a shower drain and the installation of my garage keypad. Not to mention their super fair pricing. Started out just for interior paint and cabinet resurfacing, contracted them for move-in cleaning, and will be calling them again when I'm ready to do the exterior of the house. Very detail oriented, in their painting as well as their cleaning. Couldn't be happier, and I can't think of anything to improve upon.

Rene and his crew did a great job! They removed and replaced the attic access door in our garage. The one we had ordered was actually the wrong size and they took care of finding the correct one and helping with the exchange. Rene went above and beyond by sealing up some additional cracks in our garage ceiling as well as repairing the ceiling where it was damaged from the previous door trim. Communication, quality of the work and cleanliness of the work area after they left were all great. I will definitely call Rene and his crew again the next time we need some work done.

We had a great experience with Marco and Galactic Construction! He and his crew went above and beyond expectations to paint the trim and two doors on our house at a very fair price. Marco is the type of company leader who aims to please his customers. He decided to paint an extra coat to ensure that everything looked good, sealed areas that needed it, and cleaned up nicely afterwards. Marco and his crew saw some items that needed repair and offered to do it, but Marco never uncomfortably pressed a sale. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Galactic Construction to family, friends and neighbors.

Chris did a fantastic job and was very reasonable in price. I needed several small things done and he was very accommodating in agreeing to get the materials and arrange comfortable times to do the work. He furnished the labor and material. Repaired a fence post, , installed new dryer vent, caulked sixteen windows, removing and replacing solar screens to do so. He sealed and painted spots on upstairs ceiling and down stairs rooms, painted the front door, garage door jamb and replaced sweeps on storm doors. I highly recommend him and look forward to his doing two rooms of tile for me in October.

Larry came out and offered a bid on installing a ridge vent in the garage roof, installing a weather vane and repairing or replacing several shingles on the second story roof. His bid was fair for the amount of work and time he would have to spend making the repairs. We hired him and he did an excellent job. We also hired him for a future drywall repair job in the house.

Andy responded promptly, communicated well, got here when he said he would, and did a great job. On top of that, he patiently let me bend his ear for advice on buying a truck. Thank you, Andy, for eliminating my concerns about theft.

It is a different approach, but great Project Manager that walk me thru the process and got a 3D of the what I want before actually building it. Now I am almost done with our home renovation, had a few changes along the way but Bamboo did not charge any Change Order just actual labor hours. Which is great because had quite a few and they where easy to talk to. Another thing they strive themselves with there pay as you go policy, which is really great, no lock in.

JAZ has been work diligently to complete the drywall in our new build. The team has shown up everyday as promised, unlike many other contractors on our job. The work quality is excellent, as well as the communication. When Jesus heard that we had fallen way behind on the build schedule, mainly due to Hurricane Harvey and No Show contractors, he offered other services including interior and exterior paint, finish carpentry, and Foam insulation, which we jumped at. He has been proactive through this process and we thank him for getting us back on track. I would recommend JAZ to anyone with and build or a remodel. As a matter of fact, I already have.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
