I am so glad we chose Pearl Snap to cater our wedding. Jackson and Alicia are amazing! And our food was just as beautiful as it was delicious. We met with them several months before the wedding for a tasting, and we were blown away. They were very responsive in the months leading up to the wedding, always getting back to us very fast when we had any questions about tweaking the menu. They even accommodated my gluten allergy. Can't recommend them enough!

Food quality was amazing! All my guests were impressed with the food, the varied selection and the flavor. I would highly recommend this caterer to anyone wanting the best quality food for a VERY reasonable price. I don’t regret this selection of caterer since many of the previous companies we contacted never replied to us once they realized it was a same-sex wedding. Due to the delay in finding a caterer, we did not do a tasting prior to the event not have any ideas what to expect with the quality of food (other than the plethora of amazing reviews on thumbtack). Leslie did not disappoint and I will use this company again for any of my catered events. Thanks so much for the amazing memories! My guests can’t stop taking about how good the food was.

Karen catered the sides for our Thanksgiving dinner. We had 30 family members to feed at our home and we needed someone to make all of our sides for us. Karen arranged a tasting for us in advance and made the exact dishes that we had requested. Everything she makes is gluten-free, low calorie and from scratch. It is all absolutely delicious. The food arrived earlier than expected but was still warm by the time we ate two hours later. All of the food was a complete hit. People were going back for seconds and thirds, with plenty of food leftover for us to enjoy in the days since. We will have Karen cater all of our Thanksgivings for years to come!

Roy was incredibly helpful, professional, flexible, and most importantly: made great food! We had a small wedding on Lake Austin in July and wanted "upscale BBQ." We ordered wood-fired brisket from a vendor, but we worked with Roy to create a fresh menu of sides that would appeal to a wide array of appetites, from kids (mac and cheese with a twist), to Vegans, to gluten free. He provided all servingware and utensils, and was there to set up and serve, and help with clean-up. I would highly recommend Roy for any of your needs!

David catered for my wedding and I was extremely impressed with the quality of the food, as were my guests! Everything was delicious, especially the complementary spicy pinto beans he provided. I got rave reviews from people in my family who love spicy. My only wish is that I would have told my wedding coordinator to ask David to pack some food for me to take home! As the bride and groom we hardly had time to eat, and by the end of the night we wished for some more of the delicious food! Especially since you can't get it anywhere else. All the meats were juicy and with great flavor...pulled pork, brisket, and turkey. The mac & Cheese was delicious, as was the spicy coleslaw. We even got vegetarian gluten-free gumbo. I would totally use David again, and hope to have an excuse to use him again in the future. With his prices and his quality of food, he's well worth it!

I attended the Herbs & Harmony Holiday Dinner Party. The food was a beautiful take on the traditional holiday offerings. Each course was rich but light, and had many simple, but decadent ingredients. My favorites were the savory bread pudding (choices of gluten-free or regular) and the baked salmon with an herb mayo (dairy free) and pomegranate seeds. This is elevated cooking that will leave you satisfied, in addition to supplementing your health. I highly recommend Taylor's offerings for a gathering or for your personal health goals.

I found Chef Heath for my small, festive dinner party - 9 people. I chose food drop off, and it was delivered punctually to a home in Barton Hills in spite of gridlocked Trail of Lights traffic. Our appetizer was a delicious hummus with bright, crisp crudités. The rib roast was perfectly cooked and seasoned, succulent and juicy. The tiny roasted potatoes and herbed green beans were al dente and subtle. Dessert was a tart sweet raspberry pie. Everything was gluten and lactose free and was easy to put into our dishes and serve family style at the table. The extremely reasonable price included delivery, and my friends couldn't stop talking about how good everything was!

We had recently catered food from Aarisha Catering and wanted to share my experience. It was a last min and a large order for 20 but the food was delivered on time. Taste was awesome. Our guest really liked chicken curry. They also included some Gulab jamuns for free to go with the order. Thank you Ritu and Ashish for making our guests happy.

Sasha did an incredible job for my recent event. She provided us with lunch on both days and was able to work well within my budget. We had a lot of dietary restrictions, and Sasha was able to accommodate them all with ease. She was extremely responsive and took great care of us. All of our attendees raved about how delicious the food was (including the gluten-free bread)!! I will definitely be hiring Sasha again for my next event!

Catering on-site: set-up, break-down, service and decor provided. Everything from apps to desserts and beverages. They were knowledgeable and professional, and able to adhere to gluten-free menu options but our guests didn't know any different!

Julie did a great job catering our wedding. She brought great, attentive staff and made delicious white fish and lamb skewers. She worked really well with our wedding planner. It felt like we had the dream team on our side. I really can't recommend her enough. She was easy to get along with, provided plenty of tasty food, and listened to our feedback. We also had folks at our wedding (including myself) with special diet requirements (vegan, vegetarian, dairy free, and gluten free) and she was able to accommodate them all. I would hire her again in a heartbeat.

Mark was amazing!! The food was out of this world, and most importantly he and his son were professional, as well as personable. They did an amazing job cleaning up and just helping make our girls weekend the best it could be. I think one of the most important things is he had no problem what so ever catering to the needs of the group. We had a couple of vegetarians, as well as some gluten free diets. He accommodated those dietary needs with no problem. I can't wait to use him again. It was one of the best catering experiences I have ever had.

Jeff created a fantastic menu for our dinner party. The event was stress free and the food was the highlight of the evening. Jeff came prepared to our house with all the cookware and ingredients needed, served all the food, then packed everything up and left us with a clean kitchen. Highly recommended!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
