I've known Brandi for about five and a half years. She has worked on a number of projects with my husband and me, and I love working with her because she listens to my ideas yet doesn't hesitate to add some of her own. She understands that our family will be the people who live with the end product, and she excels at making "my dream" happen. She is not intimidated by strong opinions as she enjoys having solid direction. However, if I needed guidance, she was full of ideas and worked with me until I was comfortable and on board with the direction we were going without being pushy. Brandi is the only designer that I've ever worked with who has a program on her computer where she will take your room size and place the furniture in your room before you purchase it to make sure everything fits. On one job, it was extremely helpful or I would have had one chair too many and it would not have fit into the total design. Brandi worked with me on a job in Grapevine, Texas, Jaco, Costa Rica, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. In fact, I am getting ready to work with her on another job in Colleyville, Texas. Each job was completed in a timely manner and on target with budget. Another area that was very helpful in working with Brandi is that she doesn't intimidate anyone with a high-end budget. In fact, she has bargain fabrics in her work room and passes the savings along. If you can't find what you are looking for, no problem. She has many sources to find exactly what you want. She specializes in "fabulous". Brandi will always work with you until you are satisfied. In fact, she goes above and beyond what her profession might dictate. She wants you to enjoy your experience and love your completed project. In fact, when you are finished, you will realize that you have a new friend. I've tried to work with many designers, but it never worked out because they had their own agenda for a completed project and did not listen to what we expected for the end result. I don't want people coming into my home and recognize the work of a specific designer I worked with. I want our home to reflect our tastes, and Brandi is a master at making that happen. Working with Brandi was refreshing and, if you are in the market for a designer, quit looking and call her. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy the journey, June

I have been a customer of Wynter Interiors for at least 15 years. I have the utmost confidence and trust in her. I have used her services on 3 of my houses, and enlisted her to assist my two children on their first houses which also cements her versatility & skill. Charmaine is a perfectionist, she listens to your requests/vision, double checks to make sure the requirements/solutions are inline her customer's expectation. Ultimately, Charmaine is a visionary who also guides you so that you have the facts on why or why not you should or should not choose this or that! Very inspirational and forward thinking. Thank you again for all of your help in making the various houses into homes which were/are reflective of the various stages of our lives

David has been delightful to work with. We hired him six months ago to design our entire house in Trophy Club. As a busy professional, I don't have the time or the talent to decorate a house of our size. David was tremendously quick to understand our budget and style. He knows what we can afford and what would look best in our home. When it's time to make a decorating or design decision, David only provides us with one or two items to make a choice from. David's choices are always extraordinary and it's nothing I would have ever found myself. He is so brilliant; he could certainly finish our house to our taste without any additional assistance from us. David has also helped us finish all of our projects under budget. This has allowed us to allocate more finances to different projects we weren't going to execute until later in the year. David is extremely charming and is always there to respond to our inquiries. I'm very glad he is our designer. It's been an enjoyable experience. He is a hard worker; he doesn't waste your time, and will get the project completed on time and under budget.

We found Megan on Thumbtack to assist with the interior design of our first house purchase. Her background and experience is what sold us. She came in and listened to our needs and vision for each room. We were wanting the wow factor upon walking into the main living area because we have high ceilings and Megan hit a homerun with it. When family and friends visit, their mouths drop! It was a great experience and we look forward to working with Megan again in the future on other projects!

I hired Terri for a complete renovation of my condo. It turned out beautiful. Terri took great care in every detail. She was spectacular at selecting paint, furniture, flooring, appliances, area rugs, cabinets, countertops, window treatments, tiles, doorknobs, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, and the list goes on. Everything selected is better than I could have envisioned. Terri is always thinking about creative ways to solve problems and come up with the best solutions, to fit within your budget and personality. Terri came up with solutions I would never have thought of. For example, she found a beautiful coffee table on casters, so that I could move it easily in order to use the pull out bed under the couch when needed. She is smart with her design layout and is careful to ensure the space has a logical flow without everything matching or monotone. The fact that she is also one of the sweetest people on the planet is an added bonus. I am so impressed. So very lucky to have met her. I could not have found a better designer!

Kelly's very sweet, professional, and easy to work with. She works efficiently and provides honest feedback to our selections. She pays attention to the vision that we are trying to achieve and listens to our concerns. She lifts the stress of decorating the house and self-doubt from us and makes us enjoyed the building process again. She's also very flexible and responsive to our requests. I appreciate that Kelly pays attention to details and provides us with tips and tricks during the construction process. I would highly recommend her.

I am in the new home construction business myself. I came across Priscilla and absolutely fell in love. Not only was she professional but she was very prompt and responsive. She set incredible expectations and always followed through on her word. The finished product for my little girl's nursery was out of this world. I knew exactly what I wanted and she turned my vision into a reality. I will definitely be using her again for future design projects. I HIGHLY recommend Valentine Interior Design!

From the time we began to build our house, Jill was there to help with decisions that made everything much easier for me. From the architecture to colors, custom curtains & all decorating. She pulled everything together to create exactly what I envisioned. She is a master at knowing what look you are going for just by asking the right questions & that helps save both time & money. She is very professional & went above and beyond to help me. I am so pleased with Jill, and the outcome that has resulted from working with her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
