They completed the job @ the agreed price. Very friendly professional & courteous. They did forget to put a blank cover over a vent that's duct was removed. But it was a big job in pouring rain. Overall I would use them again & would recommend them to my family or friends.

David has worked with us here at Ken's Vapor Shop three times on our air conditioning issues. For the first problem, he came out and troubleshot the lack of cold air flowing, discovered quickly the parts that were malfunctioning, purchased the parts and repaired the issue. For the second and third issues, his initial questions over the phone were enough for me to be able to confirm (in the second instance of outage) that my thermostat batteries were malfunctioning and (in the third instance of outage) my landlord's delay in changing filters had caused a blockage to airflow and freezing within the unit. While advanced repair work was not required the last two times, David was courteous and quick to help us with elementary advice, particularly since I'm not mechanically inclined. I would recommend his work to ANYONE!!!

Outstanding service, affordable (lowest cost), honest, reliable, and available. The AC drain was leaking water through my ceiling. Through Thumbtack, I promptly received 3 quotes. $65, $85, and $95. I chose David Lyon from 8:22 Heat & Air who had the best combination of cost, review, availability and experience. Within 1 hour of my request, I had an appointment. Three hours later, he came over and fixed the problem: blew the main drain with nitrogen and ensured it was draining again. He also made recommendations for a new drain pain and movement of one the ducts so water would no longer flow inappropriately. I would hire him again for my future AC repairs.

Robbin and his team did a fantastic job cleaning our ducts and vents. Our house was built in 1939 and I think this was the first time it had been cleaned. It is 5500 square feet so it took them a day and a half to complete this huge job. They also went to Home Depot and got new vent covers for the ones that were too dirty or damaged to reuse. The pricing was more than fair, in fact I think they should have charged me more for the wonderful job they did. All members of the team are pleasant and professional. They cleaned up after themselves which was no small task. I highly recommend Aero Duct Cleaning and will use them again in the future. Wendy Skulman 5 Star Rating

We have an older house and our dryer was vented into our crawl space, just a few feet from the furnace. Not an ideal set up, so we asked for quotes to have the vent run outside. Joshua was very responsive and detailed during the quote process. He was also very specific re: what would be included in the job. We had a minor change in specs vs what we'd originally told him re: the length of the vent we needed and he was flexible and willing to work around that. We needed the work done quickly. He was able to schedule the job within 2 days of us requesting a quote. He showed up on time, completed the work in a timely manner, the vent looked professional and clean, and he did not leave a mess in our house. His price was higher than the other quote I got, but his reviews were much better. I'd say that the reviews are spot on and I would hire him again.

I had asked for duct cleaning but Gerardo suggested an inspection before I went to that expense. He showed up when he said he would and checked my entire house trying to locate the smell that I was getting. In the end he located the source and it had nothing to do with anything in the ducts. He saved me a lot of grief and he did it with a very pleasant personality. I would highly recommend him for any kind of mechanical work.

I was very impressed with Rainbow International. I hired them to clean the dryer vent and rearrange the washer and dryer so that the doors would open the way that they should. They arrived on time and were very pleasant and professional. The job was a little more complex and took more time than anyone expected. They were here until the job and cleanup was done. I will contact them again next year when I need the vent cleaned and recommend them to anyone who needs this type of work done. Thank you for making my life easier.

Hired them originally to fix roof leak, which they did, and just had them doo a roof “tuneup” which resealed all the pipes and vents that protrude thru the roof. Professional work at good prices, will use again when I need roof work.

There are a lot of people who say they offer this service. But I was flabbergasted when I found out how ripped off we'd been by the previous "dryer vent cleaner". The other guys blew some air through the tube and ended up leaving it 90% clogged. When Jacob from HomeSafe showed me how dirty our vents were, especially on the roof where the other service didn't even bother to go, I just couldn't believe it. When HomeSafe left, the duct was 100% clean (and shiny!) from the roof to the inlet in our laundry room. This service does the WHOLE job. Thanks, Jacob! I called Economy Systems to come give a second opinion of the ac vent inside my apartment. The issue I was having at the time was that I kept sneezing and was getting headaches nonstop and it seemed like it would get extra dusty in my apartment. I called the apartment maintenance crew to come see if the ac unit was broken but they said it was fine and showed me a clean air filter to prove that it was working fine. They even did this little trick with toilet paper after they switched on the air; they placed the toilet paper on the vent where the air filter was and it stayed there. I told Jose from Economy Systems what the maintenance crew told me so he went straight to the air filter. He asked if I changed the filter and I said never and I moved in almost a year ago. The look on his face was complete shock! He explained to me that the return on the apartment wasn’t even pulling any air and that is why the air filter looked brand new. He said that an air filter should at least be changed every 3 months and there is no way that the return on my apartment was working as it should if the air filter looked brand new. He said that’s why it was so dusty in the apartment and could also be the reason why I was getting headaches. He did the same thing with the toilet paper. But Jose explained that if the return was pulling like it should be then he wouldn’t have to place the toilet paper on the vent, it would just be sucked up to the vent. Then I remembered the maintenance man even had to catch it from falling the first few times he tried to do this trick. I moved from those apartments since then my headaches are gone and if it weren’t for Jose I would’ve renewed my lease at those horrible apartments. I haven’t had any troubles with my new apartments but if I ever need more help with air conditioning or heating advice or services I will give Economy Systems another call! Cesalee C.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

  • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
    • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
    • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
    • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
  • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
  • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.
