So far in the project Rick's team has been like a Tornado... in one day they have completely removed two trees down to a short stump, 5 tall ,overgrown bushes from the front of the house, and 4 small trees from the backyard. I can now actually see my house!! I am looking forward to seeing the end result when the job is complete.

I am very hesitant to leave a bad review for anyone, especially when they have majority of good reviews. Zachary said he could do our job (cactus removal) on Sunday. I asked what time, and ge responded with "it will be early". I attempted to contact him last night to get a better estimate of time so that we could be up and made plans to take the kids out for the day since the backyard would be worked on. No response. After waking at 7am and getting the kids up and ready, its now 10:45am and no one has showed. I've attempted contact with Zachary with no response, so I am assuming this was a waste of my time. Now the other projects to follow this cactus removal have to be rescheduled.

Better than I expected. I was late getting out of the house headed to work and I forgot to tidy up my backyard but Richard went beyond my expectations by moving some patio furniture himself in order to complete the job. I'm definitely satisfied with his work. He mowed and edged my front and back yard and his price was the lowest I found on Thumbtack. Can't beat that. I will definitely continue to use Richard his services. Keep up the good work.

My lawn looks awesome! The clippings were picked up(not blown away) from the front and backyard. Also, they took the time to remove the clippings from the flowerbed. Overall, very pleased with this service and will use on a regular basis. Thanks Miguel! You got yourself a new client!

Ruben came out within the hour on a Sunday to give me an estimate. I walked him through the things I wanted, he gave me a very fair price. I was skeptical at first, he didn't write anything down and said he could do it two days later and have everything done in a couple of hours. Especially when one of the things I requested was cutting a very annoying neighbors tree that is right on our fence line. This tree hangs way over into our yard and has very tall branches. Every other company that came out said they could get what they could get..... Which the guy who did it last year, could barely get anything because it is so tall... Well Ruben went above and beyond and did it the right way. He got in the neighbors tree and cut everything I wanted! No one else has been able to do this or wanted to.... I also had Ruben remove two other trees and trim up some very overgrown crepe myrtles. He did a great job! Ruben has a great eye for landscaping and knows what he is doing. I appreciate the work Ruben did and will definitely be using him in the future. Thank you so much Ruben!!

Dean was quick to respond to our inquiry, gave us a reasonable price and came out a few days later to trim our trees. We were at work when Dean came out to trim the 5 trees in the backyard. We were skeptical of leaving a check for someone we had never done business with ,but Dean kept us in the loop on the work progress and when he finished asked us if the trees looked okay. He did superb job trimming the trees and left the backyard and patio in very clean condition that we didn't have to do anything except admire the newly trimmed trees. We are still in awe how beautiful our trees look. We highly recommend Dean and will definitely do business with him again. Wish we could post pictures of his work!

We hired Carlos and his crew to work on our backyard and front after putting in a pool. He showed up provided a quote better than everyone and got started on the work right away after we hired him. He was most reasonable and work hard and fast for 3 days till the project was completed. The owner shows up and works along side his crew. Great service, competitive pricing and quality work. I would highly reccomend this company for anyone looking to get any landscaping needs. Thanks Carlos!

I had a messy backyard overgrown with weeds. Jacob @ JNE got here the same day I posted on Thumbtack, gave me the quote and the next day the job was done. He made my yard look brand new and far exceeded my expectations. He even trimmed my trees. Prices are amazing and he is extremely professional and friendly. I wasn't even home for the project, and he simply said, "don't worry, I'll handle it and just invoice you." I recommend everyone call him for your landscaping/lawn needs. I definitely will work with him again.

Fantastic - best contractor we have ever hired. Mike (Owner) provided a detailed line item quote and was the lowest quote among six other contractors. He communicated with us from start to finish. Work exceeded all expectations. Asked for new quote on another project. His crew finished the job in four days as promised and were very professional, friendly and went beyond the scope of the project. My wife and I are amazed how well the pool demo went, the sodding of the backyard and front and the clean up upon completion. There needs to be more contractors like Agnew Contruction Co. They can gladly use us as a reference for potential customers. Many "Thumbs Up".

Carlos Jimenez removed a large tree in my backyard. The tree had large branches hanging over my wood privacy fence. He assured me there would be no damage to the fence. He was absolutely correct. He safely removed the entire tree down to grade with zero damage. Fantastic cleanup. A true professional. You won't be disappointed.

Towers Contractors LLC did an excellent job in constructing a solid foundation deck for an outdoor patio kitchen I had recently purchased. There team of workers were punctual every day and wee very helpful and educational in assisting me with the design of the deck I desired. They took the time to explain the process of what was required to build a sturdy deck that extended from my pool side edge over an area of my sloped backyard. They completed the project in a short period of time. All members of their team were always courteous and professional. I highly recommend them for your future construction projects.

We absolutely love our new deck! It looks so much better than I was imagining. Chris was great to work with, and was always open and honest. I asked a good amount of questions and asked for suggestions since I wasn't too familiar with what would look best for our backyard and I never once felt I was being taken advantage of, or upsold. We priced out all the materials ourselves and the total price for our deck was completely fair, especially compared to other quotes we received for the same project. I will definitely recommend French's to anyone wanting a good quality deck! Thanks, Alyssa & Garrett Clifton

Would absolutely use them again! Thank you JGR!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
