Hired on Thumbtack

I cannot recommend Mario enough! I found him on Thumbtack while I was in Georgia preparing to purchase our house in Iowa. He was quick to reply and easy to work with. Through emails and one phone call, we worked out the details and Mario followed through with the projects. We had Mario paint the interior of our house - INCLUDING painting our wood built-in cabinets and shelves white - and painting our 12 foot ceilings. They are beautiful and are not chipping at all on the polyurethaned wooden cabinets (which means he sanded and prepared perfectly!). Mario showed up when he said he would, and he always cleaned up after himself. I have not found any paint on our floors or carpets - he is very thorough and organized. We will call him whenever we need anything done in our home. My husband already has other projects for him! On top of being an amazing worker, I have to mention what an absolutely WONDERFUL man Mario is. He is enthusiastic and determined to please his customers. He is truly NICE and respectful. You will be very pleased! And - lastly - I would be failing miserably in this review if I didn't mention that Mario is an artist. While he was finishing up a job for us this morning, Mario and I discussed art. He ended up bringing in his portfolio. I am an art teacher and artist myself... I was blown away by his talent. His style is gorgeous! Ask to see his personal portfolio if you get a chance! His work is amazing! (thank you, thank you, thank you, Mario, for helping us out so much! Overall I would not recommend Mario for hardwood flooring refinishing. I think this was out of his wheel house. Our flooring turned out below average and took more than double the time to finish as first quoted. We hired Mario on a Wednesday and he started the very next day and thought he would be done by Sunday, which he wasn't "finished" until the following Saturday. As we were having all the wood flooring refinished in out entire second floor, it was a bit of an inconvenience. We were fine with it taking longer, but not ok with Mario not knowing what he was doing. We also don't believe he was honest about when he was there and what he actually did. We noticed a difference in the poly from the master bedroom to the hall and the rest of the rooms, he said there were 2 coats on all of it, but the shine difference was remarkably different. After we told him we would like another coat on the other two bedrooms and hallway, he did it then left. We waited until the next morning to look at it, and then after paying him his remaining sum, noticed he didn't do one of the rooms. Talk about being dishonest. Also, throughout the whole floor, when you looked at the wood after it was stained, you could see all the circular scratches where he used the harsher sanding paper then didn't use a lighter sanding paper to smooth them out. Which we supplied him with all the different grits of paper so we aren't sure why this turned out the way it did. But it didn't look good. Overall, I would say the flooring end result was below average and we could of done a better job ourselves. We found carpet and dust pieces in the varnish and we had to repaint all the our white trim in 3 bedrooms and hallway because he got so much stain and varnish on it. We thought he was a professional painter, but yet didn't wipe up when he hit the trim. I hate to give a bad review but after we discussed it, we couldn't give anything better. If we could afford it, we would probably have it redone again. In the end, we were just glad to be done with him, hopefully others don't have the experience we had with Mario and I hope he can learn from our experience and treat other clients with more respect and honesty than he treated us.
Mario A. Alvarez Fine Painting & Tile Co.'s reply
I tried everything I could to make her happy: different techniques, added days, reduced price. I'm convinced that some customers just can not be satisfied. By the way, her live in boyfriend couldn't thank me enough! He was so happy. ..but, only when she wasn't within earshot! Good luck to the rest of the contractors, she's got more work. Amen.

We hired Mario Alvarez to paint the exterior of our home. The contracted cost to paint our home was the highest bid we received and decided to hire him with the expectation he would fill in all nail and screw holes as well as have 100% paint coverage. His salesmanship is excellent as is his workmanship when he is in a good mood. Shortly after putting the first coat on one of 4 sides of our house, he seemed distressed when he discovered one coat of paint was not going to be sufficient. Shortly thereafter he said he would need more money than originally thought to cover the cost of paint by $300.00, which I agreed to pay him at the end of the job if he provided receipts showing he had paid $700.00 plus in paint, which he never did. He then came to us and said he had spent the deposit money ($2100.00) on outstanding bills he had and wanted more money from us to buy more paint to continue the job. We were not happy about this but paid him an additional $700.00. He also needed to rent equipment to stand over our hot tub that he seemed to think was our responsibility to cover that we did not agree to. He used a couple of our tools, 2 of our ladders, and our extension cord. We are confused as to why he does not possess the tools and equipment he needs to complete a job. I asked him if there was two coats of paint on the trim on the side he completed. He was offended that I asked and later stated that I was micromanaging him and also asked me if I was ever called controlling. Towards the end of the job there was a noticeable difference in the appearance of the thickness or quality of the painted surface and we asked him about this asking if he might have changed the type of paint he used or thickness of the application. He replied no and fixed it. He then seemed to be mad all day, banging ladders into the house and later became agitated because he backed up into a bush we trimmed away from the house that I guess he got poked by. He yelled as if in pain, I went outside to see why he was yelling, asked if he was ok, he made a motion as if to get out of his way and used profanity saying the bush jabbed him in the back. He then packed up all of his ladders and most of his supplies and left. His contract states that if he becomes unable to complete the project due to additional costs or unforeseen obstacles related to the above, he will immediately notify the customer and prepare a new contract specifically stating the reason(s) for any additional charges. He had two occasions to provide a new contract (requesting $300.00 additional monies for paint and rental of equipment used to get above the hot tub) but did not provide a new contract. We paid him the outstanding balance of $1400.00 on the day he said he was finished which he did not agree with verbally. He called me a bully, stated he knew I would do this to him, stated he was warned about me, and stated that I’ll pay. We still have dozens of nail and screw holes in the house and well as places where there is not complete paint coverage. We did not feel comfortable pointed these places out to him at the end of the job as he easily becomes offended and when he is upset does a poor job as well as gets a bit sloppy with his paint. The places we had pointed out he caulked but did not paint. He dripped paint on our rear screen door on the screen in several places. There was paint dripped on our finished concrete, and he left a considerable amount of paint scrapings on the ground on one side of our house. We just wanted him to leave so we did not have to deal with his attitude. It’s really too bad, it seems like he used to do really great work based on past reviews but perhaps something has changed. He did not want to be bothered with feedback or questions and had the attitude that the work he did was perfect and did not need to be improved on.
