Versatile and Skilled. Will adapt his content to a student's liking, be it classic textbook material, colloquial German, or a freeform discussion over a topic of interest. I find that I learn most when I spend time before each lesson to prepare/go over materials that I would like to discuss with him in class (German articles, videos, etc) .Feb 18, 2017Verified
What a bizarre, unpleasant experience. I would give 0 stars if I could. Wolfgang's profile and quote said two different prices, so I asked him to clarify what each price was for, explicitly saying that I didn't mind paying the higher one. He clarified, not very professionally, and confirmed a date and time for my German lesson (via Skype). Evidently he decided after that that he didn't like to be questioned, because he then no-showed for the lesson. I sent a few messages on Skype asking if we were still on, but gave up after that. A few hours later, he rudely replied to my messages with "Check your email more often." I never gave him an email address, so I have no idea where he thought he was emailing me. He had not messaged me on Thumbtack or Skype to say that he wasn't going to show up. After that he sent a longer message on Skype, essentially telling me that asking questions was not showing respect for his skills and declining to work with me. Pretty strange attitude for a teacher, but fine, he can choose his students if he wants to. He just ought to have told me ahead of time instead of no-showing and then claiming he'd emailed me, even though he didn't have my email address. He seriously needs to work on his professionalism.Apr 7, 2018Verified
Wolfgang is not only a native German speaker, but he also brings a lot of experience teaching English to Germans and German to Americans in schools and universities, which enables him to do an excellent job explaining grammatical concepts and vocabulary clearly and with impact. He has tailored our lessons to work best for me, including combining structured textbook lessons with other, more fun materials to help learn colloquialisms and actual German usage. He is kind and patient and truly cares about his students' progress.Aug 27, 2019Instruction and Translation: German - English's reply

Dr. Soldan has been teaching my 11 years old son German for almost 2 years. Dr. Soldan is an excellent teacher. My son loves the lessons. Dr. Soldan also communicates with me about the progress and the plans. He tailors the lessons to make them interesting to my son. Highly recommended!!May 27, 2018

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?First of all, it depends on the kind of level you request to study. Let us assume, you have no idea of German, meaning you start at point zero and have no difficulties learning new things, then the basic price would be $45 per hour. Should you need special instruction in your field, which would mean additional time for preparation, then the preparation time would count as additional instructional time. In case you take a double hour (two hours at a time), you would qualify for a deduction. This would mean, instead of paying $90, you would only pay $80 for the regular class time as a beginner or intermediate student.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?During a consultation either online (Skype - my Skype name is wolfgang.soldan) or on the phone, the new customer has the opportunity to ask any question of interest about the German classes. This included teaching approaches, compensations procedures, language goals, time frame, study guidance etc.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I graduated from the prestigious Humboldt University in Berlin (Germany) with an M.A. in English and an M.B.A. as well as with a B.A. in Pedagogy and Psychology. The Department of Education of the Federal State of Berlin licensed me to teach in the fields of English and Economy. After moving to the United States, I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with an M.A. in German Language and Cultures. My teaching certification for the subjects German, English, and ESL was issued by the State Board of Education of Texas.
