Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a massage therapist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask your massage therapist if they offer consultations over a video chat or phone call. If they do, ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. For example, ask what precautions they're taking to keep both parties safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might also want to ask if they offer gift cards that can be used at a later time, remote services or even virtual lessons for you or members in your household.

Also, ask how they plan to handle payments, and whether you can pay through an online or digital method instead of with physical cash or credit cards.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a massage therapist when social distancing?

Because massage therapy requires person-to-person contact, social distancing is not possible. However, you can ask massage therapists near you if they can offer remote services instead, such as lessons for you and your partner.

If you don’t want to book an appointment with a massage therapist right now, but you will in the future when the pandemic subsides, consider paying your massage therapist in advance or tipping them anyway. You can also ask about buying a gift card for future work.

Do massage therapists offer remote or virtual services?

Ask massage therapists near you about the possibility of remote services. You might come across profiles that state the therapist is offering remote services such as lessons and techniques you can do on your own, with a friend or with a partner.

Does a massage therapist need to enter my home?

Many massage therapists operate their businesses out of their own homes, though some offer mobile massages and come to your home. You should ask the massage therapist where they typically operate and if they are making any special accommodations to better observe the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing

If you must cancel or delay your massage therapy appointment due to COVID-19, consider asking the therapist if they can offer massage techniques or lessons via video chat, email or some other digital format. You can also ask if it's possible to buy gift cards that can be used at a later time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a massage?

Many massage therapists accept digital payments through Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. Even businesses that do not typically accept digital payments may be changing their methods to practice social distancing. Just check with your massage therapist before the appointment to see how they handle payments.

How can I find out if a massage therapist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential COVID-19 service provider varies from state to state and city to city. To see which businesses are considered essential in your area, visit the official government website of your state or city.

You can also read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How long is a Swedish massage?

A Swedish massage can range from 45 minutes to 120 minutes or more. A longer massage allows the massage therapist to give you an all-over massage and then circle back to focus on areas in need of extra bodywork. Some massage therapists recommend that your first massage be longer to give the therapist time to learn more about your health and any injuries or pain before providing you with a healing massage. The longer your massage, the more it will cost. Swedish massage is made up of five body strokes designed to relax, heal, improve circulation and maintain health. The techniques are called effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. During Swedish massage, all parts of the body are addressed, and the client is often unclothed and draped with a cloth. Swedish massage is proven to be beneficial to mental and physical health, and has been shown by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine to boost the immune system.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

Deep tissue massages are a necessary evil in my life secondary to joint and muscle pain from the gulf war in 1990. I routinely see a chiropractor, get trigger point injections, run, yoga, and road and trail bike. Since this quarantine, Appointments are touch and go. I am a healthcare professional and was a bit skeptical about going in this direction. This was the first of many fantastic experiences. I was able to not only feel less stress and pain after the massage but the no driving home afterwards was a bonus! This massage therapist is a young and extremely professional man. I am always sore the next day, but this morning, I was able to move my neck and just might hit up some trail running this evening! I slept better than I have in weeks, and I rebooked for next week, without hesitation. Best 2 hour massage I’ve had in years. Punctual, honest, and polite, I found this experience to be one if great value and knowledge and was extremely impressed by this young man. He even tolerated my possessive mini schnauzer who was being extra protective in his own home. I am thankful he’s coming back! :) - Holly Jamison Waber MSN, BSN, RN, -AOCNS, US Army— An Easy 5 star review!

Lori is a Miracle worker! I have worked from home for the last 2 years and found I have a pinched nerve affecting my right side of my neck, shoulder and arm. It is incredibly painful and takes time to heal. My doc advised getting a massage therapist to help ease the tension and work things out. I found Lori, and saw how many great reviews she had. Professional. Punctual. Informative. Super helpful in guiding me through the painful parts and encouraging me all throughout. She’s kind, patient, honest, and after my 90 minute deep tissue, I can already feel SO much relief I could cry. I immediately booked for another session and am so thankful for her expertise and quick response times. If you’re in pain and need some help getting back to being healthy and upright- Lori is your person! 13/10 recommend!!

Our first appointment in home therapeutic massage was detailed around pain management and involved a step by step communication between us and our therapist Jesse. Jesse brought to us new techniques that neither my husband nor myself had ever experienced or felt. The methods and attention to detail was remarkable. He was able to quickly assess the areas of focus for each of us and really help us with our pain. My husband had been experiencing lower back pain so much that it was impacting him walking with a limp. Jesse was able to help ease the pain and find the trigger areas that helped him feel so much better. He talks with you and explains the areas in detail and provides additional solutions for you to do in the coming days. Jesse utilizes techniques that we had not experienced and definitely want to continue sessions weekly. You’ll find that your first session was an absolute blessing; and you’ll be ready to get on his schedule for the next week. Jesse is very thorough, professional, punctual and most importantly for us we felt so much better after the first session. We understand that we’ll need more than one session; we manage and operate a small business, teacher to 3 little ones with distance learning, and have a blended family of 9. Literally, after our first session 2 weeks ago today; we signed up with Jesse to provide us weekly therapeutic massages. He truly is a blessing to us and we recommend him to our family, friends and colleagues. There are so many people that we thought of that would love and need this and actually have considered giving the gift of healing to our family. His quality of work is remarkable and will help you with any pain you are feeling; trust us, he is healing our body and he will heal you too!
