I paid Ricardo to trim trees in my front and back yard. He and I negotiated a price I was comfortable with, and he had the work done as scheduled and on-time. His staff were particularly courteous and considerate; something I really appreciate. I wouldn't hesitate to use Ricardo again for tree trimming.

Just finished trimming my trees and had a large pile of branches that I needed hauled off. I gave Eddie a call and he was there the next morning to pick them up. Fast, courteous, fairly priced and professional experience. He was even sure to rake the leaves that fell from the trimmings before he left. I would definitely hire him again.

Ruben came out within the hour on a Sunday to give me an estimate. I walked him through the things I wanted, he gave me a very fair price. I was skeptical at first, he didn't write anything down and said he could do it two days later and have everything done in a couple of hours. Especially when one of the things I requested was cutting a very annoying neighbors tree that is right on our fence line. This tree hangs way over into our yard and has very tall branches. Every other company that came out said they could get what they could get..... Which the guy who did it last year, could barely get anything because it is so tall... Well Ruben went above and beyond and did it the right way. He got in the neighbors tree and cut everything I wanted! No one else has been able to do this or wanted to.... I also had Ruben remove two other trees and trim up some very overgrown crepe myrtles. He did a great job! Ruben has a great eye for landscaping and knows what he is doing. I appreciate the work Ruben did and will definitely be using him in the future. Thank you so much Ruben!!

Adrian responded quickly to my tree-trim request. He came that same day, gave me a quote and was able to do the job the next day. They did an OUTSTANDING job trimming my tree. Of all the many times I've had it trimmed, it's never looked this good! I was EXTREMELY impressed with Southwest Tree Care. They were quick, efficient, well priced, and professional. I will definitely use them again in the future and refer them to all of my friends & neighbors.

Sergio and his crew were phenomenal, they were courteous, on time, and went above and beyond my expectations for "trimming" my trees. I've given them a recommendation at work for anyone looking for tree trimming services and would hire them again in a heartbeat if I needed that again.

We had two palm trees removed. Girl with a Thumb is one of the best businesses we have hired in six years of owning our home. They were professional, punctual, and keep us informed throughout the process. We received pictures of the progress they made throughout the two day removal. They also saw a stump from a previous removal that needed additional grinding and took care of it without asking for additional compensation. However, we gave additional compensation to show our appreciation. The work site was also cleaned daily.

I hired Andy to do bi-weekly yard work and also to do a one-time tree trimming job. He and his crew did a great job on both. There were a lot of limbs that needed to be trimmed. They left my yard spotless! Will definitely be using them again and based on the job they did yesterday would recommend them to anyone.

David was hired to operate a Bobcat for clearing silt from my dry creek bed. He accomplished the work in half the time compared to another bidder. The work included the lifting, movement, then repositioning of a foot bridge. Very pleased with the end result. Because of the results, David continued the next day downing dead trees, clearing cedar trees and saplings, moving to a central location for chipping the following day. Operation of the Bobcat grappler made this job much more efficient. Final result was large pile of salvaged cedar posts and cedar mulch. Good results, pleasant to work with, cost effective.

Rose Services did an AMAZING job on a last minute, big yard I needed mowed and weedeated. I had never been a customer, and they were kind enough to work me in on short notice. Communication was thorough and personable, they kept me up to date on arrival times and the payment process. I had an unusual situation with a rental home and they worked with me to get everything taken care of. Even sent me pictures of the finished work. They went above and beyond to do a great job! Despite being shorthanded the morning of my job, they still arrived punctually and stayed in communication. There were a couple of lower small branches that had sprouted on a few trees, and they took care of those without me even mentioning it. They were wonderful to work with, seem like genuinely good, family oriented people, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing a lawn service performed. Thanks again!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
