I needed a wall tiled, and contacted 4 contractors. I received prices from 3 of them and S&G Home Services was the most competitively priced. Sometimes, the best price is not always the best choice, but in this case I was very lucky. Not only was I extremely happy with the quality of the work, I was also happy with the final cost. Eddie the owner, worked with me on the design and explained the entire process to me, and when I needed to make changes to the design, Eddie was patient and very helpful in explaining what needed to be done. I would recommend Eddie and his company to anyone who asked and would absolutely use his services again.

Quality: The finish they did was great! Matched other rooms very well. Getting a good texture match was important to me. Professionalism: Team was polite and courteous. Responsiveness: Joel always responded via Thumbtack quickly. I always knew the status of the work and when he thought they would be finished. Value: His bid was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. I find you get what you pay for -- and for the quality of work, what he bid was very reasonable. Punctuality: In general, very punctual. Our first day the team was a little late (got hung up at the supply store), but they hustled over as fast as they could. Otherwise, they finished when I expected they would. Other remarks: Popcorn removal is a messy process -- this case was no exception. While they did an admirable job covering the floors, and trying to minimize the impact, dust still got everywhere - even in parts of the house where they weren't working. There was also texture splatter here and there, but they cleaned it up without complaint. Expect that this process will require you paint your walls in the rooms where it is done. The ceiling will look so much nicer it will make your walls look awful. If you plan to paint your walls, wait and do popcorn removal first. :D They also were game to take on a little extra item here and there (we negotiated $$ as we went). Saved me from having to hire separate contractors later -- so that was a bonus. Having worked with a lot of sub-contractors and home improvement projects, the work was done very well. The dust / mess I can clean-up (and frankly, it was expected). Solid A overall.

If you want to hire professionals who do an expert job, treat you with respect, and give you a reasonable price look no further. Brothers Drywall and Painting is the company you are looking for. Recently I have had to deal with numerous contractors to do repairs on my home. Absolutely by far the best of them all has been Santos, his brother and their crew. They did what they said they would do and more! They are easy to work with and have given me something very few contractors have. RESPECT for me, my home, my time and my concerns. They did a spectacular job on my drywall repairs. You will never regret hiring this company, they do what they say they will do and are one of the few companies out there that remember customer satisfaction is why they continue to thrive in their business. Thank you so much guys for being the type of company I will happily hire again and recommend to anyone who ask if I know someone who does drywall and painting repairs. You guys are awesome!!!! You are keeping the legacy of your dad proud!

Diamond in the rough as far as contractors go! If you need it done, this couple is the one to do it! They're the only company that gave me an estimate and constantly checked up with me and in the end, they stuck to the price estimated even though I asked for a few more things in addition to what was originally quoted. I know the job was more of a pain than they took into account before checking out what needed to be done but the price never changed. This is a true, genuine, honest, (pretty awesome if I must say myself) couple that work together to make their customers happy! I inquired about a few doors and ended up with 4 beautiful doors with new knobs, a hung mirror and a fixed chair and I couldn't be happier! We also found out we know some of the same people!! So glad we found them! Thanks Maury and Melissa!!

JJ was very professional throughout the entire experience with excellent communication and keeping me informed of how long the job would take. It is so rare these days to find a honest contractor who does good work and you feel like you can trust them in your home. He is not only professional but he is very personable and a genuinely good person. He works fast and doesn't drag out the job to make more money. I am so glad I met JJ and will definitely tell my friends and family about him and use him again in the future. I love how versatile he is and can work on so many different things. Everyone needs a good handyman, and JJ is your man.

The job was to paint one room and lay down carpet in two rooms. He picked the perfect color that goes with our tile. Was a total gentleman and very professional. He even went out of his way to fix some problems our previous contractors messed up. He is excellent at his trade and very efficient. We recommend Mr. Martinez to anyone. He is in and out as quick as possible. And very friendly and personable. Thank you for a job well done. Mr. & Mrs. Roberson

Fantastic - best contractor we have ever hired. Mike (Owner) provided a detailed line item quote and was the lowest quote among six other contractors. He communicated with us from start to finish. Work exceeded all expectations. Asked for new quote on another project. His crew finished the job in four days as promised and were very professional, friendly and went beyond the scope of the project. My wife and I are amazed how well the pool demo went, the sodding of the backyard and front and the clean up upon completion. There needs to be more contractors like Agnew Contruction Co. They can gladly use us as a reference for potential customers. Many "Thumbs Up".

DV responded quickly to my quote inquiry. He was able to schedule within the time frame that we requested and at a very affordable price. Refinishing/painting cabinetry throughout our whole house was a huge job with a huge mess . His team cleaned very well after the job was done.

Javier provided superb customer service from start to finish. After receiving an estimate from the insurance company, we hired Javier as our contractor. He made sure to do another thorough inspection of the hail damage to make sure there wasn't anything missed by the insurance adjuster. After the inspection, Javier submitted an estimate for damages and was able to get us more money from the insurance company to cover all repairs, including our deductible. Everything was repaired in a timely manner and looks outstanding. He even included some upgrades free of charge. If you are looking for a reliable contractor, hire Javier Soriano. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Javier for the great service!

The range hood install was more complicated than expected. While I was prepared for the possibility of more time needed (more $$), the 2 helpers that came with the lead contractor were young and inexperienced, and this definitely impacted the time needed to complete the work. Lead contractor was very knowledgeable, professional and clearly patient with his new guys. I would use the company again but would do a better job of articulating my requirement that the "on the job training" for new hires must not impact my cost. I probably paid $50 more than I should have.

Frank was awesome. He helped remove some old mid century tile I had in my bathroom. He reconstucted walls, prepped surfaces, applied tile and installed fixtures. My bathroom was completely transformed.

My kitchen was a nightmare. I had salmon pink industrial cabinets and pale pink/beige countertops. Ugly does not describe it. I interviewed five contractors. I chose Lionel because it was very clear that he knew exactly what he was talking about. His bid was not the lowest, but was within our budget. From the minute that the crew stepped into our home, they were friendly but focused on work. Every day toward the end of the work they cleaned up after themselves. We are private people and usually not comfortable with others in our home. Very quickly, Lionel & his crew felt like family. Any remodel will encounter obstacles and require problem solving. Lionel is very adept with design ideas and aided us enormously. The end result was the kitchen of our dreams and in budget. I can unhesitatingly recommend Lionel as an honest, thorough, design savvy and good man who will attend to every detail. Perfection is his aim and he delivers it.

I hired them to help me take down an old closet pantry in my kitchen. Daniel is very responsive and quoted me a great price. He communicated very well on everything and did an awesome job. I started the project thinking I could do it myself but realized quickly I needed a professional. They came in and torn down the pantry. Then I hired them again to help me patch the drywall. I did op to paint the walls myself after. Attached are the before and after pictures of their awesome work.

I was very impressed from the start. Chris answered my call right away and came late the same day. Reliable, Responsible, Reasonable. My only expectation was that my house was painted. They corrected issues createduring by AGS THE original contractor. The work started as early as I wanted and the completion was as late as I needed. Great family of painters ,they cleaned up after every work day. Everything that was quoted remained the same cost, date of completion...I so happy with the final product. Thanks JD Painting!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
