Steven was very professional and easy to work with. When I called, he sent someone within an hour to address what was wrong with my garage door. Unfortunately, it was a costly fix. As it turns out, I had to replace both the door springs ($300.00 for both) and as it turned out, I had to have an entirely new garage door opener installed as well. After 11 years, mine was shot (so I paid $150 for the installation after I bought a new one that cost me $220). Costs aside, I appreciated the fact that Steve was open with me from the start as to what I could expect as I went shopping for the new opener. He explained what he was offering for sale and what I could expect at the big box stores. He did not hard sell me at all. He gave me a lot of information about the varying products out there, and he let me choose at my leisure. Finally, he told me that he would come back the next day (on a Sunday) and install it when I made my choice, and that's exactly what he did. He and another member of his team (unfortunately, I don't remember his name, but he was also very professional and kind) scheduled me immediately after I called the next day. They showed up on time, worked very efficiently, and cleaned up after themselves. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who is looking for honest people, who do good work, at a fair price. Thank you so much for your service!

Great job on installing my garage door opener. Pointed out that I needed a better brace for the unit before installing. Great follow up on how to operate the opener and using any addons. Would definitely have them install garage door when needed.

June 28, 2012 “Had used Hollywood Crawford Door Co. previously and received excellent service, so called them after door would not open. Spoke with Lisa and described the problem which she quickly identified as a possible broken torsion spring. She was able to schedule a repair visit the next morning indicating the technician would call prior to give an estimate time of arrival. Emmett called first thing in the morning and arrived at the time promised. He was friendly and very professional and quickly determined the problem…a broken torsion spring as Lisa had said. I asked him to add a second spring, (increase safety and prolong the life of the garage door opener), which he did with no problem. He finished the work in about 1 hour which included replacing the broken spring, adding a second spring, checking the electric garage door opener to ensure that it worked properly, and lubricating all moving parts on the door.”

My project was installing double doors in an opening that had to be reconfigured in size and required installation of a header, drywall work, texture, painting, installation of the prehung double doors and door hardware. Sonny was responsive to messages via Thumbtack and also while doing the work, checking in with me throughout the project to make sure it was to my satisfaction at various points. His rate was reasonable and he was able to complete the work in a timely manner. He was respectful and courteous. I'm very pleased with the result and would recommend him on this type of project without reservation.

Rene and his crew did a great job! They removed and replaced the attic access door in our garage. The one we had ordered was actually the wrong size and they took care of finding the correct one and helping with the exchange. Rene went above and beyond by sealing up some additional cracks in our garage ceiling as well as repairing the ceiling where it was damaged from the previous door trim. Communication, quality of the work and cleanliness of the work area after they left were all great. I will definitely call Rene and his crew again the next time we need some work done.

Alliance Overhead Door were equally knowledgeable in garage door services compared to the other companies that gave me quotes, but were the quickest to respond and gave me the best quote. I needed a garage door opener installed and the extension spring converted to a torsion spring. Positives: Fast response, good price, easy scheduling. Chris and Robert are both super nice, helpful guys. Chris has garage door openers on hand that were backwards-compatible to program both garage door openers to. Negatives: Robert forgot to call before arriving for our scheduled service time, but luckily I was already at home so we didn't miss each other. The door cables unraveled after one day, but Robert was able to come immediately and fix it for us.

I just wanted to tell you how pleased I am with the repair and service work your technician recently completed on my garage door. The door was installed new about 3-4 years ago. I can’t remember the exact date. But I can state for certain the door never worked so smooth and quiet. The comparison is unbelievable. Your technician did a great job. I’ll certainly not hesitate to recommend your company to friends, relatives and residents of San Antonio, TX . Thanks Again for the great job.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

    Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

    • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
    • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
    • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
    • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
      • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
