Gilbert and his team did a great job on cleaning out moss from our trees, cutting back a huge hedge in the back yard up against the fence and cleaning up afterwards. His prices are very good and he shows up on time. We would use this company again.

Mike & his team did an amazing job on my townhouse small backyard project - which involved tree trimming, gravel & sod elements, and general clean up of yard. It only took one day for Lone Star Lawn Care to respond to my initial project request online. All in all, the project spanned ~2 weeks to complete from the beginning of my request on Thumbtack to end. I will definitely use their services again and have already recommended to friends.

The team were polite hard working. Only issue was I had told the young lady that we wanted the lawn cut high and it was cut really short. My husband even explained what he wanted done to one of the team members when they were here. I will use them again and tell them again what we want pertaining to the lawn care

Jonathan trimmed some large branches and fixed my fence that was falling down, including the gate. He's very professional, and the work was excellent! He was on time and communicated clearly before and during the job. I will be hiring him again next month to do some landscaping. I would recommend Jonathan for any type of handyman job. He should be very proud of the work he does. He was also very affordable which is an added bonus!

I hired Ruben to do clean up on an investment property. This included lawn cut, a ton of bushes and trees being trimmed and also landscaping. His prices are very reasonable. Had to come 2 different times so was flexible with scheduling. Ruben is such a nice guy and did a great job! I will definitely use him again for all my future projects. Give this guy a try, you wont regret it!

Lisa and Jeff did a great job trimming the low branches of our tree. It just took a few swipes of Jeff's chainsaw and the job was pretty much done. They also cleaned up and hauled away all the branches. A fair price for a great job, and we will definitely be calling on them again.

I hired Andy to do bi-weekly yard work and also to do a one-time tree trimming job. He and his crew did a great job on both. There were a lot of limbs that needed to be trimmed. They left my yard spotless! Will definitely be using them again and based on the job they did yesterday would recommend them to anyone.

Chico was able to come earlier and called. When he did not get me on my cell phone, he called my landline. He and his team were great and they did a great job. They all worked hard and I really felt like I got value for my money. I appreciated his and his team's professionalism, their hard work and especially how nicely they cleaned up the yard after their work. I needed a number of large shrubs trimmed professionally. Many were 8 ft or more tall. Angel showed up on time, and got the job done quickly, with better pricing. He cleaned the worksite after completing the job, and hauled all the cut shrubs away. He’s friendly, and professional. Highly recommended! 🏆

Earl's Tree Service was hired to trim two trees. They called before they arrived and began working on time. They were efficient but careful to remove only what was necessary and requested. They made sure the job performed was satisfactory and then hauled all trimmings and debris away. The quote for a job this large was very reasonable and will contact Earl's Tree Service for an future tree trimming needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
