Not all photographers are created equal! The photography market is flooded with many people of various degree's of experience. Sometimes it's difficult for the average consumer to know what to look for when hiring a professional photographer. The most important is the quality of the person's work. Are the images they present on their website in focus? Do they have beautiful natural poses? Is the lighting on the subjects face flattering? Are the black and white portraits on the site "grey" or is the skin tone of the subject nice and bright? Are the photos all of the same subjects? (Lack of variety usually means lack of clients). A true professional photographer will always be willing to do a consultation. These consultations are a very important tool when hiring someone to take your family portraits. These memories are precious times in your life and indeed an investment in your family history. Don't trust them to just anyone. When in a consultation you should ask to see entire portrait sessions of other families. Anyone can take one or two good photos but a true professional can show you many many awesome images from every session they do. Clothing selections, locations, and children's "best" times should be discussed. The photographer should also have a display of printed products so you can judge the quality of the final product! You should leave the consultation excited and with total confidence that this is the right photographer for your family! Don't forget to check with family and friends for referrerals! When looking at the portraits on a perspective photographers website or during a consultation and ask yourself this, "Was this something I could have done myself at home?" If the answer is, "yes" then you may not be working with someone that can consistently provide amazing top notch work. You should also consider the price. Like most things in life, "if it costs more it's almost always better" and "you always get what you pay for". Custom photography costs more because it's a better quality product, the experience should be wonderful and the portraits should be absolutely beautiful and amazing.
