We had a two-day event in Austin. Johnny's team arrived on time with setup and food that our attendees really enjoyed. Johnny worked with me to address some late allergy and diet restrictions. Price was well below the bids I received from Austin caterers. Extremely happy with the job they did.

Service and food were fantastic. Joyce was on time and great to work with. She also allowed to take left over food home, unlike some caterers. The Brocolli Alfredo was awesome! Would definately recommend using her for any occasion.

Bon is my go-to caterer, period. She has catered an annual party for 60+ people for the last 3 years. She also did a more intimate gathering for a sit-down dinner for 20. I have also sampled her personal chef work through a friend. Regardless of the size of the event, Bon creates delicious, beautiful food, and she and her team are the height of professionalism. To top it all off, they do an amazing clean-up job! Working with Bon is easy and so enjoyable. You will be thrilled with her work!

After several weeks of praying and searching for the perfect caterer for our daughter's wedding, we were led to Sam through Thumbtack.com. I had spoken with a handful of other caterers, all of whom I am sure are good enough. However, they did not get my vision. When I spoke with Sam I was amazed at how quickly he was able to translate what we envisioned, and then some. He is a true professional, incredibly skilled, and wonderful to work with. We were blown away by what he gave us. He exceeded all of our expectations and the food was phenomenal! We have some foodies in our family and people are still commenting about how fantastic they found the food....2 weeks later! Not only was the food delicious, but Sam also went above and beyond the realm of his role as caterer. He offered great suggestions for decorations, shared his linens with us, and was accommodating and flexible. He is highly recommended by us and I'm sure if you asked, by any of our guests. We will continue to use Sam's services for all of our future events.

Shalamar took care of just about everything for my wedding, planned it all a month before my wedding date and everything within my budget!!! We had many quotes from other caterers, planners etc.. None of which compared to Elegant Events. We were very pleased with her professionalism while also being personal. Overall a great experience and glad we went with Elegant Events to take care of it all.

V and her team are incredible! Catering is one of the most expensive parts of a wedding, but she gave us a great deal for the value of food and quantity of people. I was so worried about not having enough food, V assured me that this would not be one of those weddings! She was right. We had so much food leftover that my family is probably still eating off of, lol. The crab-stuffed mushroom caps (that I unfortunately didn’t get to try) were a hit! As well as the macaroni 😍 Choose V! She won’t disappoint.

Troy catered our wedding with brisket, ribs, chicken, and sides. People come up to me a year and a half later asking who did the catering and complimenting the quality. My memory of that day is a blur, but the juiciness and flavor of that meal is clear. We could not have asked for better service, better food, or a better price.

This was our first time having our Super Bowl party catered and my husband was skeptical. We had about 30 guests. Chef Vida was the hit of the party. She was very professional. She interacted with the guest as well as preparing the food onsite. I can’t tell you what entree the guests enjoyed most—gumbo, chicken, or fried fish. She is known for her fried fish tower. The fish was so good our guests would eat it before she could complete the tower. My husband and I were impressed with her professionalism, interaction with the guests, and how she cleaned the kitchen after the party. He pressed me to get on her calendar for next year before anyone else took that date. We are on the schedule.

I hired the Ninjachef (Martino) for a gallery opening and event I was having in my art gallery. I had reconnected with him at another catered event they were catering and I had to meet the chef! I knew then I needed this team for my event. I have been completely pleased at the creative menu's and how custom and inviting everything was displayed. The food was absolutely spot on and many clients still talk about the food catered by Ninjachef and his wonderful team. You can not go wrong with hiring Ninjachef (Martino) for any size event you have! I promise. One truly satisfied client!

Kris as a person is one of the most lovely, kind, courteous, flexible, helpful compassionate that my husband & I have ever had the joy of meeting. Kris as a chef is THE most delicious experience to the stomach as well as the eyes! She crafts her meals (of all sorts & variety) with so much care in mind as to ensure every scrumptious bite contains the best & freshest ingredients. She is a joy to work with. She listened to as much direction as I wanted to give & then did what she’s does to perfection...Kris fed our souls as well as our stomachs!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
