Linda is incredible! I am usually hesitant about letting anyone do my make up, but after seeing Linda's portfolio, I decided to giver her a try, After our trial run, I KNEW I had made the right choice. Linda did makeup for my entire bridal party, all three moms and myself (the Bride). The makeup was glamorous, yet subtle and photographed beautifully. I would recommend Linda's services to anyone; she's incredibly talented and a real pro!

Dawn, Dawn, Dawn!!! Amazing and very talented. You can tell she loves what she does. She is very patient, attentive and honest. Dawn was a gift from my girlfriend Betty who I can't thank enough. I was very stressed and I was over trying to find a makeup artist to can work with darker skin complexions. Well, Betty worked her magic and gave me Dawn last minute. Day of my trial, first thing I noticed was that Dawn washed her hands prior to touching my face. At that very moment I knew she was going to be my makeup artist. She gave me skin care advice and products to use on my skin up until the wedding. Where they do that at????!! To top it off Dawn drove to Galveston Texas for light light light bridal makeup, whereas any other makeup artist would have told me I'm wasting their time. She worked with me to perfect the look I wanted day of. It turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I can't boost enough about her quality of work! If you are looking for a makeup artist I truly and definitely recommend Dawn. She is the truth!!!! My pictures prove the type of work she can do!

Andrea did bridal makeup for me and my party. Everything was done well. Communication was always prompt and professional. From the trial to bridals and day of---makeup was flawless. Andreas expertise was obvious. Despite a few snags in logistics on the wedding day, Andrea remained calm and continued to work. She listened to what everyone wanted and have them exactly that! I don't wear makeup often and not a huge fan but her applications came out beautifully in the photos and I received so many compliments! Would use again and recommend at highest level!

Olga is the makeup artist to hire! I hired her to do my bridal makeup. She is so friendly and really listens to what you want. The makeup she uses feels so light and it didn't look like I had a bunch of stuff caked on my face. The best part is that I still looked like me, just a more enhanced and flawless looking me! So if you're getting married or going to a fancy event, Olga Reza is your girl :)

Jessica did my makeup and hair for my bridal and boudoir portraits, and my wedding. Each time, I was incredibly happy with the outcome and pleasantly surprised with the product. She was easy to get a hold of, professional, and flexible. She will either come to you or you can meet her at her home studio, I did both options, I both worked perfectly. Overall I was very pleased with my choice in make up artist/hair stylist for our wedding and the events leading up to it and am so happy I found Jessica on thumbtack.

Leslie was my makeup artist for my bridal portraits as well as wedding day. She is very professional, timely, organized and detail oriented. During the trial run she was honest and gave me great suggestions after listening to my requests. She was very calm and responded so understandingly as a few chaotic events unfolded the morning of my wedding day (including a change in venue where the makeup application was to be held after she already arrived and set up). She did a phenomenal job and I loved my makeup for both the bridal portraits and on the wedding day. I was extra happy that my makeup stayed on all day long with minimal touchup. Without hesitation, I would recommend Leslie to anyone who is looking for a makeup artist. I look forward to booking her for future events...may be I can convince hubby dearest for a vow renewal!?!

Qiana is awesome! She was the make up artist and hair stylist for my bridal party which included makeup and hair for me and my mom and makeup for two of my bridesmaids. I had a consultation with Qiana before the big day to work out the look I wanted and she nailed it! Airbrush is the only way to go for a flawless look that lasts all day and Qiana did a great job matching my complexion. She is very professional and a great makeup artist.

Pravda Designs did a great job on me and my Bridal Parties hair and make up! I just showed a picture of what I wanted for my wedding day and Kasey made it happen! She did a great job on my make up too! I usually wear the bare minimum for make up, and she made me look amazing and look like myself, which was great. My sister loves to wear make up and experiment with things. She was very happy with the way her make-up was done as well. I would definitely recommend Pravda to anyone! They also have great pricing!

Ronnee not only booked me with short notice (my fault), but she was punctual and professional upon arrival. She did my makeup for my bridal portraits and then came in to do my face for my wedding day. My portraits came out perfect- classic and beautiful, and I received tons of compliments at my wedding for the added "drama" (glittery eye shadow). Overall, Ronnee's work was excellent. Looking forward to working her in the future!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.
