I mistakenly went with another contractor to build my fence. It was a mess, but Antonio came to the rescue. He and his crew corrected the spacing of the planks, straightened out areas where corners were cut, repaired gates, and returned to bring some of his crew's repair work up to his high standards. He was easy to reach and very responsive. I've already hired him to do some additional work in the yard (laying sod, etc). He's my go-to guy for landscaping projects from here on out--highly recommended.

Perfect experience with Tell Projects. Worst experience with one of their contractors. 1st let me say that I give 5 stars to Tell Projects for my sunroom renovation. Everything went perfect from the estimate to the final project. I also wanted my bathroom renovated and decided to use Tell Project's contractor Luis Moreno. He told me he could do the renovation for cheaper than the estimate I was given by Tell Projects (HE LIED), after he started the bathroom renovation EVERYTHING was considered "extra" and this is where the DISASTER started. I had to not only purchase the glass shower door, vanity, and the closet door on my own, but he also asked for more money because he claimed he spent alot of money on the tile "he insisted on picking the tile for the shower". He used kitchen plumbing under my vanity sink (leaked after 1st day), his "father in law" installed my shower faucet backwards ( I now get burned when I turn the water off), AND all of my tools are missing because they kept using my tools and never returned them. I knew this was a disaster when I walked in and saw the person installing the shower door watching a YOUTUBE video on how to install it. In the end, I had to hire a plumber to install the plumbing under my sink, a shower door specialist to re-install the shower door so that it closes properly, and apply silicon for the leaks around the shower door. DO NOT use LUIS MORENO for any projects! He never finished my bathroom and took my money without finishing the job. I have nothing but good words for Tell Projects. But don't use their contractor Luis Moreno. You will be sorry!

David and his team did an outstanding job installing my sprinkler system earlier this year. I would highly recommend him to anybody that is looking for a sprinkler contractor. David knows his stuff and worked with me on the different drainage and sprinkler projects I asked him to complete. It took them two days to install the entire system and they left minimal damage to my yard. David also followed back up with me a few days later to show me how the system worked. Great job!

I received three quotes. Mr. Garcia's quote was much less than the other two quotes due to the amount of shingles that were necessary to reroof my house. I told him the other roofing contractors quoted more shingles than he was and asked what if it takes more? He said the difference would be on him due to a wrong estimate. When he came to sign contract, he remeasured my roof and said he was correct in his estimate. Mr. Garcia saved me some serious $$$$. I was so happy with the one day roofing job, I am hiring him to do more work for me as well as my neighbor is hiring Mr. Garcia to do work for him as well. Thank you Robert Garcia for you honesty, integrity and one day service...!

John Guillot, the owner of Atlas Construction and Remodeling, is a very friendly guy who is courteous, kind and professional. All attributes consumers like me look for when hiring professional help around the house. It is also a huge plus that Mr. Guillot is very knowledgeable and does amazing work too. I hired Mr. Guillot to do a welding job to my favorite chair. My chair is like new again! Without reservation, I highly recommend the services of Atlas Construction and Remodeling. We are using Atlas Construction and Remodeling for our 'bucket list' of work starting with painting. Thank you, -Tim Tim Kightlinger BSN, RN League City, Texas 77573

I couldn't have asked for a better experience than the one I had with Modern Aztec Construction LLC. I hired them to repair my driveway, and through every step of the process they provided nothing but exceptional, professional, and outstanding service. Esaul & Hippolito were two of the nicest, most dependable, punctual contractors I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I called a couple different companies to get a quote for adding sprinklers to my yard, as well as add some landscaping and possibly turf. SafeWater Services was by far the most knowledgeable, reasonably priced and just nice people in general. I will be calling them again when I do my outdoor kitchen and pretty much for any outdoor construction.

Corey & Lestourgeon Home Improvement did great work renovating our master bathroom. Corey was very responsive and timely with the project, which was rare for us to find when looking at contractors. Corey would always be forthcoming about pricing and would notify us of any changes. From the research we did, his prices were very fair. Corey was respectful of our space at home, and always left the work site clean. The work was beautifully done. We recommend Corey, and would use him again for future projects!

Welton was punctual, displayed great professionalism, wonderful to deal with, very amicable and honest. He did tile replacement, grouting, and caulking on my masters bathroom. It only took him a few hours, his price was fair, and the work came out looking like new and clean. I am very happy with the quality of his work and strongly recommend him.

Hired Canteira Stone to repair some cracking on my townhouse. Once the stucco was removed, extensive water damage was discovered. Ruben with Canteira jumped on the project, becoming a general contractor and keeping the repairs moving, even through Christmas. I always felt I was receiving good communication from them and received good work for a fair price.

About

Since the 1960s, Jeffrey Harrington Homes has been building Houston area's custom homes. The company was originally founded by a Harvard graduate, William J. Harrington, who served as the 1970 president of the Greater Houston Builders' Association. As Harrington Homes, we were one of the original builders in Greatwood, Sugar Creek and Sweetwater, among southwest Houston's other communities. Since our inception, we have finished numerous homes, specializing in custom homes in the 2,500 to 12,000-square-foot range. Our typical projects range in cost from $300,000 to $2,000,000 and above. In 2005, Mark Jeffrey, a former professional Texas engineer, became majority owner, renaming the company Jeffrey Harrington Homes. As president, Mark focuses on establishing Jeffrey Harrington Homes as a premier builder of technically-advanced, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly custom homes. Mark is also a partner in Palladian Residential Construction, which has been building homes in San Antonio and Houston for the past six years. Since 2003, Palladian has completed close to 100 homes. Mark received in 2009 his certified green professional designation from the National Association of Home Builders. Jeffrey Harrington Homes commits to building individual custom homes with a high degree of participation from the customer in the construction and design process. We believe that today's custom homes must meet a higher standard compared to those of the recent past. Each home is a reflection of our design team's creativity and our client's vision. We are always evaluating new technologies to build superior homes. More and more, a major consideration is to build a home that will withstand easily hurricane-strength rain and wind. As an additional benefit, we find these technologies can also lead to much more energy-efficient homes and can lower insurance costs because of superior fire, mold and termite resistance. We also believe that our homes should be state of the art in the usage of technology for home automation, security, entertainment, internet connectivity, lighting, etc. We fully support the growing trend of environmentally friendly green building. In every project we do, various attributes of green building appear. However, we firmly believe that our customer's money is best spent in building the most structurally-sound, energy-efficient frame and envelope. Then, this design philosophy will better support technologies such as heat pumps, solar heating and power generation, wind generation, etc.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
