I mistakenly went with another contractor to build my fence. It was a mess, but Antonio came to the rescue. He and his crew corrected the spacing of the planks, straightened out areas where corners were cut, repaired gates, and returned to bring some of his crew's repair work up to his high standards. He was easy to reach and very responsive. I've already hired him to do some additional work in the yard (laying sod, etc). He's my go-to guy for landscaping projects from here on out--highly recommended.

Isaac is one of the most professional contractors I've ever worked with and his drywall job was awesome! He was always on time and worked hard, as well as great communication and a fair price. I would definitely recommend him! Great job, Isaac!

Perfect experience with Tell Projects. Worst experience with one of their contractors. 1st let me say that I give 5 stars to Tell Projects for my sunroom renovation. Everything went perfect from the estimate to the final project. I also wanted my bathroom renovated and decided to use Tell Project's contractor Luis Moreno. He told me he could do the renovation for cheaper than the estimate I was given by Tell Projects (HE LIED), after he started the bathroom renovation EVERYTHING was considered "extra" and this is where the DISASTER started. I had to not only purchase the glass shower door, vanity, and the closet door on my own, but he also asked for more money because he claimed he spent alot of money on the tile "he insisted on picking the tile for the shower". He used kitchen plumbing under my vanity sink (leaked after 1st day), his "father in law" installed my shower faucet backwards ( I now get burned when I turn the water off), AND all of my tools are missing because they kept using my tools and never returned them. I knew this was a disaster when I walked in and saw the person installing the shower door watching a YOUTUBE video on how to install it. In the end, I had to hire a plumber to install the plumbing under my sink, a shower door specialist to re-install the shower door so that it closes properly, and apply silicon for the leaks around the shower door. DO NOT use LUIS MORENO for any projects! He never finished my bathroom and took my money without finishing the job. I have nothing but good words for Tell Projects. But don't use their contractor Luis Moreno. You will be sorry!

Stan messaged me on Thumbtack within just a few hours of my post. He had a detailed description of what he was going to do and a reasonable price to do a relatively routine ceiling drywall patch. Stan and Craig showed up on time for the job and set up a large area of plastic tarp to shield my guest bedroom from debris. They were very thorough in the repair and meticulous to match the texture of the replacement with the surrounding ceiling. I didn’t expect them to paint the celling after they were done but he did! I didn’t think I had any matching paint on hand and Stan was willing to run to get some. That’s how dedicated to a great job these guys are. We ended up finding some paint but the fact that he was willing to go out of his way shows his integrity. I WILL use them again if ever needed (God willing I wont need too but...) because they offer a high quality service and superior customer service. In the day and age of contractors hosing their clients out of money, Galveston Contractors is a welcoming exception!

David and his team did an outstanding job installing my sprinkler system earlier this year. I would highly recommend him to anybody that is looking for a sprinkler contractor. David knows his stuff and worked with me on the different drainage and sprinkler projects I asked him to complete. It took them two days to install the entire system and they left minimal damage to my yard. David also followed back up with me a few days later to show me how the system worked. Great job!

Derek promptly came to our home to provide us with an estimate to widen our driveway and discussed some possible solutions for us. I feel the pricing he provided was very reasonable, however; we ultimately decided not to proceed with the project. Had we have moved forward, we likely would have selected DS Asphalt for the job due to Derek's responsiveness, professionalism, and the fair pricing. I'd also like to mention that in addition to getting pricing on the spot, Derek followed up with a written quote via email that same day. I've come to find that many other contractors in the area can take several days to provide written estimates, so I think this is worth noting.

I received three quotes. Mr. Garcia's quote was much less than the other two quotes due to the amount of shingles that were necessary to reroof my house. I told him the other roofing contractors quoted more shingles than he was and asked what if it takes more? He said the difference would be on him due to a wrong estimate. When he came to sign contract, he remeasured my roof and said he was correct in his estimate. Mr. Garcia saved me some serious $$$$. I was so happy with the one day roofing job, I am hiring him to do more work for me as well as my neighbor is hiring Mr. Garcia to do work for him as well. Thank you Robert Garcia for you honesty, integrity and one day service...!

John Guillot, the owner of Atlas Construction and Remodeling, is a very friendly guy who is courteous, kind and professional. All attributes consumers like me look for when hiring professional help around the house. It is also a huge plus that Mr. Guillot is very knowledgeable and does amazing work too. I hired Mr. Guillot to do a welding job to my favorite chair. My chair is like new again! Without reservation, I highly recommend the services of Atlas Construction and Remodeling. We are using Atlas Construction and Remodeling for our 'bucket list' of work starting with painting. Thank you, -Tim Tim Kightlinger BSN, RN League City, Texas 77573

I couldn't have asked for a better experience than the one I had with Modern Aztec Construction LLC. I hired them to repair my driveway, and through every step of the process they provided nothing but exceptional, professional, and outstanding service. Esaul & Hippolito were two of the nicest, most dependable, punctual contractors I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I will definitely be calling Modern Aztec for any work I might need in the future. You can count on these guys!

I called a couple different companies to get a quote for adding sprinklers to my yard, as well as add some landscaping and possibly turf. SafeWater Services was by far the most knowledgeable, reasonably priced and just nice people in general. I will be calling them again when I do my outdoor kitchen and pretty much for any outdoor construction.

Larry provided landscape design and implementation services. He took out most of my existing front yard landscaping and replaced it with a new design. He listened to what I didn't like about my existing landscaping and what I was looking for in terms of aesthetics, fullness and low maintenance and came up with a great design. In working with him, it was clear he has vast knowledge of flowers and shrubs and whether they would work to be planted in my front yard and considered the amount of sun and shade my front yard provided. My interaction with him was very educational and he managed my expectations well. His team completed the job timely and cleaned up each day before they left. I would definitely use Larry again and plan to have him come back to look at my backyard in the spring!

Eric was a great contractor to work with. Even though there were a few issues with the back yard patio. Eric was fantastic in getting the problem fixed. He stayed in regular communication while waiting on supplies to arrive and the weather windows to open up. He did everything necessary to fix the problem and went above and beyond what was needed to make things right! I would highly recommend him for future work and would easily use him again. Its hard to find great people to work with and even harder to find honest hard working people who take pride in the work they do and value their reputation!

O’Neil was amazing! He showed up on time and really listened to our situation and needs for our masonry repairs. His compassion for us as Harvey flood rebuilders was above and beyond our experiences with other contractors. He offered us a VERY fair price for the work. He will be our go-to mason for all our future needs. Hiring O’Neil was the best choice and it will be yours too!!!

Brick/Stone/Masonry Repair: Julian and his crew were very responsive and professional. They arrived at the time discussed, completed the job beyond my expectations, and were very professional both with myself and the other contractors that were working in the same area. His pricing was right in line with other contractor's I received pricing from for this job and his attention to detail made this project a great experience. I will definitely be using him again and would recommend him to anyone that is looking for any type of brick/stone/masonry repairs or construction.

Richard was hired as a subcontractor for a variety of work on my house. His task was mainly sheetrock and ceiling repair. He did an awesome job! Richard was professional, courteous, and honest about what he did and why. If a problem arose, he was prompt in informing me and offered a variety of options to mitigate the issue. He went above and beyond by encouraging the contractor to go get parts from Houston rather than waiting the 10-14 days for them to be delivered locally (as an aside, I am still waiting on the contractor to come finish installing the shower in my master bath) When I am ready to do more work on the house, I will be calling Richard rather than the original contractor.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
