After reading several positive reviews, we choose Meggan from InVision Interior Solutions to stage the main rooms of our house to get it ready to show once it is put on the market. Even though the interior was still being work on and had not even been painted yet she came to see the layout of the house to get an idea of where she wanted to place furniture and other items. Since we knew what colors we had chosen for the walls and cabinets she used photos that we sent her to help her choose the colors she would use throughout the house. Due to a scheduling conflict I had with another contractor I asked Meggan if she could move up her staging date by several days. She had no problem in accommodating me. Once the countertops were installed and all of the painting was completed it was now time to start the staging. She had the furniture delivered and setup in the appropriate rooms. The next day which was Saturday, Meggan brought in all of the accent pieces and placed them throughout the house which really made the house look attractive. The house was now ready for picture taking which was done the following Monday. I would say that Meggan has the vision to give a house a lot of flair and color. I am very glad I had her stage my house.

Taya is wonderful, and I'm so glad I found her! I just moved into my new place, and I had no idea what to do to make it more inviting (I'm horrible when it comes decorating). I hired Just Organized by Taya, and they accomplished more than I could ever imagine! Taya helped me to pick out the furniture and appliances that best fit my style, and her team was able to stage my house in just a day. I am beyond grateful. I feel like I finally have my dream home. Thank you, Taya! I will definitely be recommending you to anyone who needs help with interior design in the future!

Kimberly really delivered!!! I couldn’t be more pleased with the results! I needed help deciding which items from my old house would work in my new house. Kimberly looked at both houses (my staged house and my new house) and told me exactly where to place the furniture and wall treatments in my new house. This was an overwhelming task for me to contemplate myself. Within two hours I had all the answers from Southern Allure Staging and Design! I will use Kimberly again whenever I need help designing the items in my home. I was so pleased with the outcome and the charge for services was very reasonable.

I've found Lauren via Thumbtack for her Wedding Planning Services. I have noted that Lauren is very determined, hardworking, and puts in the extra time for her business. During our meeting she told me she has her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts in Interior Design from the Art Institute in Houston. Perfect, I thought! I recently bought a new home and needed some design work. I told her what I was looking for, what I needed, and I gave her a deadline due to a party I would be hosting soon and she executed! When an issued occurred she followed-up and ensured it was corrected. I'm very pleased with her Interior Design service and will recommend her services.

Moreover, Jann & Elizabeth were very cost conscious and helped me stay on budget regarding the fixtures and materials used in the project. They are constantly on the forefront of trends in the industry and provide excellent customer service. Brittany was very professional and personable. She reached out to me constantly before our first meet up to have an idea of what I was looking for in my home. Her main goals were making sure that I was happy with the layout and interior service she provided my husband and me. House of Brittany provided me with a five star service. She bounced ideas off of me and my husband and always came back with designs that pleased and surprised us. She has a great eye and sense of decorum! My home has all the comforts and statements I want it to have due to her keen eye for spacing and style. I would recommend her to anyone looking to stage their home for the buyers market or for home owners beginning to decorate or revamp their home!

Edwin was the best decision I made for our renovation/remodel. Edwin remodel the kitchen / master bathroom and added an addition of 240 sq ft to our 102 yr old house. The remodel took 5 months and he saw every detail through to the end. He took care of permitting, revising and adapting our original drawings, and advising us on improvements that were needed outside the original scope of work such as new insulation, new incoming water pipes, and modern techniques to improve upon architect's design. I was constantly price checking him, and found his pricing very fair. He was timely on a day to day basis and kept us well informed on what work was happening and if work was not happening, why. We would definitely recommend Brivenca Builders and would use them again.

It was our pleasure to have The Deco Guys work with us on our home renovation. They both brought a wealth of knowledge, talent, and professionalism with them, which made our extensive project go as smooth and efficiently as possible. Always open to our ideas, and concerns, with prompt response, top quality products/designs and understanding. Their sub-contractors were the same, wonderful to have in/out of our home. The result turned our home into a beautiful, functional, and comfortable dwelling we enjoy and share often.

She's great! I have had her redecorate my child's room as a beautiful Cinderella type princess throne room. Beautiful mauvy tones! Then had her redecorate my living room a natural bamboo and Chinese pottery inspired haven. And she has helped me redecorate my Christmas tree many times over. All her designs are beautiful and she can help the most indecisive of clients.

Sherry was amazing to work with. She was honest, hard-working and thorough. We had 2 half walls knocked down, all floors either refinished or replaced, new countertops and back splash and everything painted. The fireplace was refaced with stone and a reclaimed beam. Everything is perfect and the timeline she gave me, she stuck to. There was only a week delay from the initial timeline she gave me. We were very pleased with the quality of all her work. We couldn't be happier and we highly recommend her company.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

        • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
        • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
          • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
        • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
          • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
        • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
        • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
