Jon has helped me with a range of different at my new house- painting, installing a garbage disposal, installing blinds, minor electrical work, etc. I so much appreciate his professionalism, knowledge, attention to detail, and his follow through. I'm very grateful for his help- if I could leave six stars I would! Thank you Jon!

Joel and his team correctly estimated the total time required for the project and showed up and completed the work within the agreed upon timeframe. We're quite satisfied with the quality of the drywall repairs and painting he performed.

The PaintPro team did great work at our house. There were some issues with scheduling and timing when it came to the actual days where someone was there painting but Bobby did his best to resolve quickly. I'm only rating 4 instead of 5 due to some minor cleanup not being completed. There was left over wall paper on top of our refrigerator and paint in the sink after the job was completed.

We loved everything about working with Flying V's. Matt was knowledgeable and very friendly. He was quick to answer our questions and provide his expertise as we researched colors and paint finishes and what worked best for the rooms we had. We also liked that he encouraged us to pick out as many colors as we wanted. Next, the painting itself was very high quality. Matt strives for quality and integrity and we saw that clearly. Matt himself along with Jason and Mason did our project and all did exceptional work. Jason and Mason were both friendly as well. We would highly recommend Flying V's for any type of painting project.

Okay so the job I asked for was admittedly simplified, but when Bill and Tony showed up they immediately sized up the job and began work immediately. They removed the existing cabinets and placed them in my garage for later use. Then they installed the new light fixtures, patched and painted the wall and installed the new cabinets. I was impressed at this point, but when the Master Electrician came to inspect the electrical work, I was amazed! My wife is so happy with the work that I have been given permission to hire Fixed again to install the old cabinets in my garage! Stay tuned, guys! And great touch with the door mat and shoe covers! That was the icing on the cake for my wife! Thank again!

Derek and his crew did a great job painting my nursery. He was on time, professional, and came back the next day to fix a small flaw that I found. He had a positive attitude and was a pleasure to work with. I will definitely be hiring him again!

I'm sorely disappointed in the lack of professionalism in this work. On the phone, Joseph said that there would be a drop cloth to cover the sidewalk from drops, walls would be taped, that they always do a great job. I mistakenly took his quick phone contact as the real deal and scheduled without getting any other quotes. Upon arrival, there was no drop cloth, no tape to tape the side wall. He said he was initially going to use a paint roller to apply the stain, but now that it requires hand painting it will take a little longer. I put out a sheet for the guy to start working, and within minutes there were some splatters proving it was necessary. So many things were unsatisfactorily done. As you can see from the pictures, the poor attention to detail, lack of full staining on upper boards, splatters on the jam, etc. Moreover, I just built a bench, and the guy stepped on the bench with his boots leaving boot marks that I had to sand out and restain this afternoon. I also had to get out my ladder and stain areas that were missed on the lower areas. I got out the touch up paint for the side wall since they were going to try to use paint thinner on my exterior walls, so I stopped that before it could happen. A paint can was knocked over accidentally into my planter that now I had to clean out this afternoon as well. There's nothing I hate more than hiring someone to do work that requires me to do more work afterward. Despite my feedback throughout the process, they said that wood would always look different and that they indeed stained it. However, when I go back over with my cloth with stain and fix the spots, it's clear that they just wanted a quick job--which I was hoping for too. For as simple and straight forward as climbing a ladder and putting stain on a brush and being careful of were that stain went, It was an excruciatingly frustrating job that I just wanted to be over. Lesson learned about using Thumbtack.

Exterior painting and wood work Bud just finished the exterior of our house – painting and wood work. We are extremely pleased with Bud and his assistant. They were on time and efficient! Throughout the entire process, Bud was attentive, professional and made sure each of our concerns were addressed. His assistant was great too! They treated my entire property with great care. There were no 'shortcuts' taken. I would recommend Bud to anyone looking for a terrific handyman company!

Johnny and Diego of Quality Choice did a fantastic job at a fair price. Johnny was very responsive and easy to communicate with, not to mention fun to be around when I met him at the job site at the end of the job. I'm a real estate agency broker and will be using Johnny and Quality Choice for future painting jobs, as well as recommending them to my clients. -Drew Johnson

Allan and his crew did a fantastic "professional" job! He communicated exactly what he was going to do and arrived when he said he would! He went beyond expectations...patched every hole & imperfection in my house including trim. He will be painting the outside of my house next. He also does popcorn removal, drywall, tape & float, texture, carpentry....you name it he can do it

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
