Blast installed a wall unit dog door through my brick wall. His communication before, during and after the job was prompt and thorough, he was on time, he was friendly and professional, and he did a great job. I would certainly hire Blast again.

Issac came out and painted our living room and dining room, the previous owners of our house painted the walls a very bright blue and we wanted a very light tan color. Our walls also have rounded edges, making the job even more tedious. Issac came out Friday night at 6:30 and gave us an extremely reasonable quote to do the work and began promptly at 9 am Saturday morning. He worked until he had the job complete. He did an incredible job! He has a eye for perfection and we could not be anymore satisfied. When company came over to see our house, we had nothing but extremely positive comments as well as many requests for his business card. We already received a quote from him to do the rest of our house and will be using him again in the future. Very professional man and extremely pleased with the work he did for us.

I have had so much trouble trying to get someone to take on my job. Because of some water damage, I was in need of a new a/c access door and repair to the surrounding ceiling. Eduaro responded to my request almost immediately, and scheduled a time to come take a look that same day. He took some measurements, told me his plans, and gave me a quote including materials within the hour. He arrived the next day ready to work. He was fast, efficient, professional, and polite and did a high quality job for a reasonable price. I absolutely recommend!

He was so professional and completed the work in a timely manner. My window is now more secure than when the original builders installed it. I can sleep easier tonight than I've done in the past few nights since the window is now fixed. I will be definitely be using Philip again. Thank you so very much!!

Stan and his crew are awesome!! They removed my old fence and built a new fence with two gates. They did a beautiful job. My fence looks fantastic. They also did some wood repairs on my house and some landscaping. They did an excellent job. I am really pleased with the way everything turned out. Stan is very punctual, honest and his prices are reasonable. I highly recommend him.

After meeting with several installers for hardwood floors, I decided to go with A-1 American flooring. It was definitely the right decision for me! In addition to installing hardwood in my dining, formal living, family room and stairs, Al was willing to help with other miscellaneous projects: installation and painting of quarter round for the tile in my home (builder did not include it), installation of kitchen faucet, ceiling fans, and garage door opener. The heading that they still take pride in their work held true. I plan to use Al for future projects and have absolutely no hesitationi in referring him to friends and family. Happy to provide pictures of completed work upon request since I cannot include in this review. ~Tara

Overall, I am very pleased with the service that Daniel and Charles provided. I had damage in my office from a leaky window so both guys dug into the issue to figure out where the water was coming from which was a builder install mistake. His pricing was competitive to other insured contractor bids I received. I could have gone with a non-insured person to save a few hundred bucks, but I paid a huge price a long time for trying to save a few bucks. So I hired Danny because he was professional, insured, and has a nice little portfolio on Thumbtack. I'll be hiring these guys again for other work around the house! Thanks Danny & Charles!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
