This man is the master of the small jobs. He is honest, very fair in costs, definitely the most polite soul I have ever met, and an extremely hard worker. I started out with one project and had him do 3 before it was over. He will be my go to man for the jobs I have around my home, especially as I get older. I recommend him for your projects around your home. Don Knebel

I called JWR Home Services for installing the garage overhead saferack. Jason was very punctual and provide the update on-time during arrival. He provide estimation before screwing the walls. Eventually the saferack I bought was not suitable for my ceiling. so I had to return the things but he provided the additional information to buy the suitable safe racks. He helped me to pack the stuff back to the original boxing which I did not see with anyone. He is so helpful and I strongly recommend this company to hire for any handyman work.

Medina Construction & Roofing did an excellent job replacing our roof when it was wrecked by hail. They repainted the ceiling inside, completely matched texture of the ceiling and paint color — they really did a beautiful job on the repairs and were fantastic to work with. Marcial was patient and professional throughout and his crew cleaned up like they had never been there and did solid work pretty quickly. I highly recommend Medina for home improvement projects.

Joel responded to my request timely. He was professional in the way in which he addressed the work that needed to be completed in our home as well as with the scheduling of the appointment. His rates are reasonable. His work is very neat and precise. Also, he is very knowledgeable about his skill and the work that he does. He gave us great advice as to how to approach our home improvement projects. Needless to say we shall be using more of his services to complete more of what we need to get done.

Wilfredo and his team painted my entire house, remodeled my kitchen, added crown molding and refaced my fireplace mantel. We are very happy with how everything turned out and will be calling him back when we are ready to remodel our bathroom. Wilfredo was always very professional and he always went above and beyond to make sure he found me the colors, back splash and sink that I was specifically wanting. I would highly recommend him for any home improvement project.

Meeting someone for the first time and hiring them to do one of the important things for the place you are going to live for the next couple of years/decades can be daunting task. I was on the same boat couple of weeks ago. Frank did have all the parameters i needed for the person i wanted to hire to install my engineered hardwood floors for ~ 2500 sqft. Biggest + i find is he imagines himself to be living in the home rather than treating it a customers house and added advantages are being professional, knowledgeable No one can be perfect, frank and his crew are no exception but the difference lies when you want to correct it before the customer says or after the argument. I only had to direct him to the location and he would take care it for me. Next time hire : Yes Recommend to someone: Yes Affordable: Yes Chances of improvement: Yes All in all happy and I might have found a trustable contact in a domain that i have never dealt before.

Dan is a swell guy. Interesting person to chat about and I enjoyed his thoughts on the projects I was doing to my home. I actually changed a plan of mine that I never had thought about (the placement of a door I'm building) and....well, that brought a lot of value to the work he did. Fun guy and I suggest picking his brain...he'll give honest feedback. Cheers

I hired Ever to do 3 jobs for me. Paint and texture my entire garage, epoxy the garage floor, and paint my concrete patio in the back all one color. He showed up with his team on friday ready to work and knocked out all the garage prep work, taping off and texture. On Saturday he painted the entire garage, did the epoxy, and painted the patio. I came home from work at night and just stood at my open garage grinning and shaking my head with complete satisfaction. He did an amazing job and went above and beyond to guarantee my wife and I were very happy! He even painted and mounted our shelves and flag brackets, and cut and made a better attic lid cover for us which I really appreciated. We will be calling Ever back for any future plans we have in the future. My wife and I will be hiring again for more work!!!

Manny saved my renovation - and maybe my marriage! Hired Manny's Painting Services to paint the downstairs of a Condo my wife and I just purchased. When I met him, I could tell he was the guy for the job! His bid was straight forward and fair and he could work with our short time frame. Well, as renovations often go, the small project of removing part of a wall grew with the addition of plumbing and electrical. I ran out of time and wasn't able to get the Sheetrock up myself. I messaged Manny and he told me not to worry, he would get it handled - and he definitely did! I told Manny I would have the Sheetrock there for the guys by 9:30 Am. His guys were waiting at the house for me when I got back from Home Depot at 9:10! They unloaded the Sheetrock and asked for corner stripping, which o of course forgot. In the 25 minutes it took me to go to Home Depot and back, they had almost all the Sheetrock up. They filled in holes all over the house and made all the corners straight. Everything looked perfect and they even cleaned up after! Manny was on site for much of the job and made everything so easy. He told me they would be back the next day to paint (they needed to give the mud a day to dry). They guys were there early again the next day and wasted no time and got right to work! They knocked out the whole place (including a 20 foot tall stairway) in just a couple hours and everything was perfect! Manny came by soon after the job to make sure everything was perfect and it was! I can't say enough about the work Manny and his guys did! True professionals!

We are putting our house on the market soon. We need touch ups done throughout the house as well as one wall painted. They first visited our home to give accurate quote. Then they were able to complete the work just two days later. Work turned out lovely. What I am equally impressed with is that one of his guys accidentally knocked a lamp over. They immediately paid for that damage! Mistakes happen and this group really took care of us! Thank you!!! Would hire again!

Luis and his mother who is his assistant on the job, were such a pleasure to have working in our home! We needed to have done some drywall work and change some ridiculously high placed bulbs on our chandeliers. Luis got the work done in a timely manner while his mother prepped the areas that would be worked on. Both of them made sure to clean up after themselves. They treated our place like it was their own and we really appreciated that. Overall, they were upbeat, positive, and a pleasure to chat with. If you need something done, call Luis. He is a go getter and his dedication shows!

We called Eric to come over to tape and bed some seams in our garage along with take care of some popped nails that appearex over time. He did a WONDERFUL job. Everythring he quoted about the job was spot on. The time he appeared. The price. The length of time required for the job to be completed. He completed the job as promised in all aspects. It looks like a new garage. I would HIGHLY recommend him for a return job to my home or to anyone else.

I would really recommend this remodeling company to any body needing any kind of work around their home. I called to get a quote to convert my garage into a bedroom with bathroom and also needed renovations in my kitchen. I called for a quote and they came out that same day. Very helpful and even gave me some advice to save a quick buck in the process. It didn't take long before they were starting to remodel. They kept me updated every step of the way and I really appreciate it. I loved the communication. Really happy with the final result. Nice family owned business. Will use them again.

I had an excellent experience with Sami and his crew from The Flooring Shop. Having been through another home improvement that was disastrous, I was very skeptical but they delivered with flying colors. Sami was the only person I got an estimate from that actually followed up with me and was responsive to my emails/texts. Before, during, and after the process, he would always be available to help even after hours and on weekends. They remodeled 2 baths for me installing tile for floor and walls on shower/tub plus a frameless shower. I was very impressed how fast they got the job done and sometimes were working until late. They did quality work at a fair price and I would definitely recommend. Thanks guys!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
