The two men who did the work were excellent. The overall price was OK. There was, however one significant area of dissatisfaction. We were told that there would be 3 men working, for a rate of $70 per hour. When the time arrived for the move--and it was too late for us to want to postpone, we were informed that only two men would work, and that we would pay only the two-man rate. I agreed, but did not ask what that rate was. When the work was finished, having taken longer than expected due to only two men working, I was informed that the two-man rate was only $10 less than the rate for 3 men. WHY??????? 1/3 of 70 is 23, not 10. This leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth, and detracts from a positive experience otherwise.

I would recommend these movers and use them again in the future. My movers were Jon and Chance. They were professional, courteous, and quick. You can tell they have worked together before because they seemed to have a "you do this while I do this and then we'll help each other on this" system of communication. When they showed up, they assessed all items to be moved to decide where to start. They wrapped all furniture in plastic to avoid damages. I didn't even have to remove any items or drawers. They disassembled my washer and dryer for me. They even beat me to the new address and were very willing to put things exactly where I wanted them to go. I was hesitant to go with an hourly rate moving company but this went great. Thanks!

Great experience! David, Jonathan, and Juan (don't have the names in front of me but I believe these are the names) took exceptional care of my things. Between the plastic wrap on everything and the patience they showed in navigating around the corners and walls in my house, it felt like all my furniture was wrapped in airbags. Aside from meals (they worked for me for 12 hours!) and a thunderstorm, these guys moved at a high rate of speed. Very professional and courteous. I will definitely use them again if I have a need.

We had Elite Movers(Thomas and his team) help us move recently and our experience was very pleasant. They were consummate professionals & incredible! They wrapped all of our furniture and moved them very efficiently. They moved heavy weight boxes very easily and no damage all together from 3rd floor to 3rd floor. Flat rate moving was very reasonable and affordable. We will definitely recommend them for all projects. While we don't want to move anytime soon, we will definitely use them again next time we do.

They moved all my things in one truck, one trip, very efficiently. Didn’t break anything. They contacted me right away and accommodated the next day. Nice guys, would’ve liked the tv stuff connected after being disconnected but it’s no big deal. They had been working hard for 4 straight hours without a break under the rain. No extra fees. Which I loved, flat hourly competitive rate. I tipped them though.

Red Carpet Moving was fantastic in my move. They were fast and efficient - had my entire house loaded onto the truck in about an hour and fifteen minutes. My move had two stops: a storage shed and a house. Most of my furniture was going into storage, and I had some concerns about it all fitting, but the guys Tetris'd everything into the unit so well that there was space left over. When we got to the house, they were patient with me while I rolled out rugs and had them place furniture in specific spots. They didn't break anything. After they left, the only damage I found was a scrape on the frame of a mirror, which I can easily fix. Considering that they were moving 3 mirrors, a large flat screen tv, and a bunch of cabinets with glass doors, I consider that a great success. The crew was also very friendly and nice. I would definitely use them again.

There were two workers. I have to give major props to Jaime! He was professional, fast, he knew exactly what was going on, and did everything to make my move smooth. If not for him, I would have pulled my hair out. Jaime packed up my bathroom, bedroom, clothes closet, hallway closet, and hallway in the amount of time it took the other worker (main person?) to pack up the kitchen. One. plate. at. a. time.... :-/ I'll let you read between those lines. Thing is, if they had finished sooner, I would have tipped even higher! Loading and unloading was fine, but again, this is where Jaime shined over the second worker. I was very clear about where I wanted most items, but Jaime went out of his way to set up my bed so I could be comfortable on my first night in my new place. The other worker kept acting confused about a lot of things: "That bookshelf isn't going to make it up those stairs", "where do you want that box again?" "what room are you talking about????" Then he made a comment that moving my electric piano would cost extra even though it wasn't on the initial quote--even though I included it on the things I needed moved. The comment came out of nowhere halfway into the move. I took a lot of time to make this review just to make sure I was calm, but even a month later, it all still applies. The main worker made a couple of comments that don't apply to the move that still left a bad taste in my mouth, so just for next time: Don't worry about hourly rates, just get the move going; your customers will appreciate it. If they don't compensate you then, they will in either the reviews or word of mouth...ie, more business.

Service was great but I was extremely disappointed to hear that the movers made about 25-30% of the total amount I was billed and that Bellhops takes the remaining 70-75% when all the movers are essentially gig economy workers (similar to Uber drivers). They should absolutely be taking home a higher percentage. It's outrageous.

The quality and professionalism they showed when doing the actual move was second to none. 10/10 I definitely recommend you to call Alex and Edwin.

Universal Movers provided by far the best flat rate for my move and they stayed on budget. My only complaint - and it's pretty specific - but there was some lightweight little stuff in drawers that fell behind the drawers to where they wouldn't close. Not a big deal but would've rather they say something even if they weren't going to be able to fix it. Just a heads up would've been nice... But they worked hard and got the job done!

So happy with the job Hawks movers did on packing and moving my house. Mark and Robert were super fast and took great care of my things. They were even able to fit all my junk in their trailer...although I did mention I didn't have that much stuff, but it turns out that I really did have that much stuff, they still made it work lol! Although they weren't the cheapest place that sent me a quote, they were worth every penny I spent on the move. Thank you so much for all your help guys :)

Hired Guidance Moving to move our business office to a new location. A team of 3 showed up and got right to work. They quickly disassembled our desks and wrapped them for transport. They were all very polite, hard working professionals. I often worry about such services when there is an hourly rate involved as people sometimes "milk the clock" but not these guys! They did not slow down until the job was finished. Everything was handled perfectly. The rate was great and the quality of work was exceptional. If you are looking for movers, look no further, these are your guys! I will hire them again in the future!

We had hired 2 movers from another source , but they sent a text at 9:30 the night before stating they couldn’t make it because they were too busy. We only had that next day to move. I was up at 3:00 am trying to figure out how to hire a mover on short notice. I remembered about the thumbtack app. I sent my info and received options for 4 local movers immediately. I responded to 3 and Samuel texted me back at 6 am! Yahoo! He was working in our area that morning. He sent me his phone number and we decided on a time. He was even able to come earlier. He and his associate were very nice. They did a good job. They went the extra mile to help us. They carefully packed our uhaul which we were traveling with that same afternoon. We are very happy we chose this company, and they had the best rate. I might add we moved from a one bedroom apartment and the job took about 2 1/2 hours. We had no stairs and we had the use of a residential elevator and a nice loading area which helped the movers. I really liked using the thumbtack app. Thumbtack saved the day.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
