Mike installed hot and cold water supply valves and drain plumbing connectors needed for the laundry utility sink in my laundry room. Mike connected all the plumbing for the sink and he secured the sink to the wall. Very nicely done!

I needed a hydrostatic sewer test as well as a static line test in order to transfer my foundation warranty from the previous owners of my home. Roy and Max with Delta 1 were able to get me on the schedule the same day I called. Very professional guys, and definitely knew what they were doing. Very well priced, and if---WHEN--- I have another plumbing project needing done, I won't hesitate to call on them again.

I have used The Fence Rescuer on several occasions and I will never have to look up another handyman/fix it service ever again. The first time was actually a complete face-lift inside my home before we moved in. Frank and his crew worked on several different aspects of my home, from building me a new gate to enclose my backyard, to sealing our attic, and even re-plumbing the back bathroom so it could accommodate my washer and dryer, and on top of it all they even finished the job early. The best part about the experience was the customer service, it was just my mother and I moving into the home, and all of the guys on the crew were not only polite but respectful, and that made us both feel very comfortable. It is truly hard to find trustworthy people that also do such quality work, I know this is a phone number I will be holding onto for sure!!

I am 65 and in the real estate business so I have worked with a lot of plumbers. Clint Teames is the most professional, hard working man and did a perfect job. I had a sewer line that was 14 ft deep where it broke. If you do not hire him it will be your loss. He is by far the best I have ever used! Roy Robertson

Jason was able to install the new faucet, which we primarily got to hookup a special water machine. We were not able to get it to connect to the new faucet. So, he went to a plumbing store nearby to try to find an additional part we needed (which they didn’t have). Since we couldn’t get it to work, he removed the new faucet and reinstalled the old faucet. Would definitely hire again, he went above and beyond!

Jordon installed a new waterline from the meter to the house bypassing the existing water line that was leaking underneath a tree. He also tie the existing water line for the master bedroom add-on to the new line. Jordon's estimate is very competitive and he is very good at his work. He also spent time educating me where to look for leaks in the house after I told him my water app detected ongoing leaks. I am very satisfied with the job he has done and will hire him again for my future plumbing projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
