These ladies did an exceptional job at my home. I only requested services for my kitchen and it was WELL worth it. When I purchased my home, there was this disgusting stain on my stove that I thought was permanent. when I came downstairs and saw my stove, I was SHOCKED! the stain was gone. I will definitely use them again. I would have rated them 5 stars but there were 2 things that I would have liked done better. they missed my microwave oven and I SHOULD have requested that my floors be finished with a Shine. If I would have done a walkaround in my kitchen I would have caught that they accidentally forgot my microwave oven, Other than that, they were WONDERFUL! Very sweet, kind and Professional women. I would definitely recommend.

I am glad I hired W&W Painters for my kitchen cabinets, front door and some outside work. William was organized and professional. His main guy did most of the work and William filled in. He also has people for specific things such as spraying cabinets and changing ceiling look. All of the workers did a great job and I would not hesitate to hire them again.

I hired Les to install a dining chandelier and two kitchen pendant lamps (from 12 ft ceilings) and a dimmer switch. I was extremely pleased with Les. He showed up exactly at the agreed time and did a great job hanging the fixtures. And Les' price for his services was very reasonable.

John was nothing short of amazing! I called him out to fix the mess I made of my bathroom walls, having taken down wallpaper. I planned on just having him re-float the drywall, so I could put up new wallpaper but his price was good enough I went ahead and had him rehang the paper. It looks terrific and he did a perfect job VERY quickly. I already have plans for him to do more paint projects and next week he’s power-washing for me. He is a very kind and honest man and I had no qualms about having him work at my home while I was at work.

Simply put, there is not a better carpenter in Texas than Daniel Coronado. Daniel made custom cabinets for me out of White Maple wood and I have received a compliment from every last person who has seen the cabinets. Daniel walked me through the entire process and spent about two hours going over different wood types, stains, and other specifics about cabinets. He never once got frustrated with me despite having limited knowledge on the subject. I was originally debating about getting designer cabinets, but, as Daniel explained, every cabinet is made from a finite selection of wood, so the only variable is the carpenter. In other words, the designer cabinets are made at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars even though they are made of the same wood as someone like Daniel would make. The big companies are just getting paid based on name recognition. The problem is finding a carpenter to trust. I completely trust Daniel.

We had an excellent experience with Ardeco for our kitchen remodel. They removed one wall of cabinets and installed shelves, painted remaining cabinets and tiled remaining walls. They were very professional and also helped with some unexpected finds (not unexpected in our old home) such as a leak from outside into the kitchen. I felt very comfortable with the entire crew. Roberto was punctual and did not leave until the job was completed. The price was excellent.

I hired Bryan to frame a bar for our outdoor kitchen. We had a budget that we were trying to stay within and he was very understanding of this and open to discussion about ways that we could accomplish what we wanted and still have a quality finished product. He showed up when he said he would and worked quickly. I recommend Bryan and his partner without hesitation and will definitely use him again!

Working with Cathy was easy and well worth it! Cathy knew exactly what to do with my vacant home. She selected the furniture pieces, rugs, and decor. The house showed well and we had two serious offers within the first week. We actually hated it when Cathy had the furniture and accessories removed since the house looked great, better than when we lived there. I would recommend Cathy to anyone looking for a Stager. Cathy is talented and reasonably priced!

I hired JoJo after interviewing two other designers. One of the selling points in initial discussion was her desire to reuse whatever I already have and would fit into the new design. The scope of project was to refresh all rooms in my three level 2500sft townhome. Once I pointed out what furniture I wasn’t going to give up (master bedroom set, guest bedroom set, and a few art pieces), we then talked about the look I was trying to achieve, and the budget I was willing to commit to. Over course of next few days JoJo sent me “A or B” choice pictures to better understand what my tastes were. My approach was to delegate to JoJo the design, selection, and end to end procurement, and contractor management. So her fees were for a turnkey design which also included her listing and selling items that we did not reuse. She would keep me informed on items she was selecting and often asked for my choices. She kept me updated weekly on budget and items being shipped to the house. Her contractor crew for tile work, painting, handymen, etc., were all professional, and she managed them by giving them specific instructions on what to do each day, what to get done by when, getting updates from them daily, and paying them. She visited the site several times a week to ensure progress, and later in the project even to specify what height a chandelier should be, where what wall art went, organizing display knick knacks, etc. She also would ask me frequently how I felt things were going, and if I was satisfied with work done so far. We are almost done with the project – we are ahead of schedule, and at budget. The look turned out to be exactly what I was hoping for, and several visitors have already commented on how nice, clean, modern and integrated everything looked. JoJo has a keen eye for detail, design, and aesthetics. While I never saw the room storyboards, I really appreciated how together the rooms now look. From a daring stone tiled wall, to a wood panel wall to a neutral color selection – her choices were creative, on point, and allowed me to expand my own thinking about possibilities. I was comfortable letting JoJo take the lead and make smaller design decisions without my consultation, but that may not be everyone’s cup of tea. She does have a good idea of what she feels will work together, and might not consult with you on every single decision – I was ok with that. Having now gotten to know her, I don’t doubt she can adapt to different collaboration styles. She is warm, kind hearted, and very personable – a person with whom you will relate to very quickly, and that allows you to have an honest collaborative relationship. For the amount of work and duration – this was the least stressful interaction I’ve had with any trade. I would definitely use her services in the future, and would highly recommend her to my friends and family.

I couldn't be more pleased with Curtis. He did a fantastic job on my cabinet doors and drawers. He is such a nice person to talk to and he stands by his work. He had great communication and he went out of his way to install my door and drawers before thanksgiving (2016). I definatly recommend him to any needing cabinet doors made to match a specific design. He and I already discussed him building my kitchen island for me. Thank you

I contacted TAG Construction for the remodeling of my kitchen and living room floor. Homero did a great job explaining the process of the remodel and accomplishing what we wanted to have done with our home. We did our remodel loan through the VA and Homero was wonderful with helping with paperwork needed for the loan and the entire loan process. I would recommend him for any home project anyone may be thinking of completing.

Nick with L & C was very professional. We wanted a home remodel for our kitchen, living room and master bathroom. We chose L & C after several quotes. They actually had the best price for want we wanted done. Nick explained the time of our remodel and costs exceptionally well and finished within the time frame we needed. I highly recommend this company and if we need anything else we will definitely have them work on our home again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
