Introduction: I teach piano, but with an emphasis on improvisation, arrangement, and songwriting, using theory as the foundation. This teaching method gives the student a solid understanding of musical theory, while at the same time allowing them to learn in a very creative environment. I offer a free introductory lesson where I will explain and demonstrate the method that I teach.
I enjoy helping my students obtain an understanding of how songs are arranged and composed, and then see them start to create songs of their own. When a student gets excited about an original composition or an original arrangement they have created, and then realizes that they can replicate those results with an infinite number of creative possibilities (different musical genres and different subject matter), I can't help but get excited also.

I took lessons from my grandma as a young kid, and hadn't had a lesson in over 20 years when I started to look for a teacher. I was a little a anxious about being able to find a teacher I liked that would also be able to teach me the things I wanted to learn, but it became clear from the very first lesson that Treyan easily had all of the bases covered and more. I haven't asked a question yet that he didn't immediately have answers for. Not only does he have tons of knowledge, but he also has the skill to demonstrate everything I asked about with a high degree of proficiency. From beginner concepts to advanced theory and songwriting, Treyan has it all. You will absolutely not be disappointed if you choose to pick up Treyan as your piano teacher.

Trey is very personable, conversational, and friendly! He takes the time to get to know his students and what their goals are in taking piano lessons with him. He is very passionate about playing the piano and is very skilled at it as well. Highly recommend to anyone looking to fine tune their existing piano skills!

I have feel enormously privileged to be taught by someone as passionate and talented as Treyan. My piano skills and understanding in the 6 months that I have been currently working with him have increased to levels I would not have thought I was capable of in such a short amount of time. Treyan has an inordinate amount of patience along with a welcoming teaching climate that encourages creativity, critical thinking about pieces, and a passion for playing the piano.
The method in which he teaches is unorthodox to how I would think traditional piano teaching would be carried out, but I believe it makes it that much more effective. I feel I have an understanding of how music theory and writing works to a level that is beyond what I what get with traditional instruction. I look forward to every lesson - Indeed, they tend to be one of the highlights of my week.
I can't stress enough how highly I would recommend Treyan if you are serious about learning not only how to play the piano, but understand and have passion for it. I worried when I first started seeking piano lessons from teachers that I would burn out in the first couple of weeks or months, but I feel as excited as ever to walk through the doors, and have Treyan guide, teach, and walk me through a new lesson every week.

I have had an amazing experience taking lessons from Treyan. I am an adult student, who knew next to nothing about piano when I started. Treyan did, and continues to do, an amazing job at listening to what my interests are, and then completely tailoring his lessons to my interests and goals.
I was interested in Treyan as a teacher after chatting with him because of the creative, flexible, and improvistational way he teaches his students to play. He has a strong core system to ensure you learn the important theory, chords, and scales, while also combining an intuitive rhythm method for learning songs.
I have been taking lessons for six months, and am astounded by not only how quickly I am learning, but how much I am enjoying the process. Best of all, Treyan is extremely responsive and diligent in his prep before and after lessons. I've had him send me instructional videos on the weekends, print and notate music for me, and listen/find songs that he thinks I would be interested in.
If you can't tell already from my review, I would highly recommend Treyan for any age student who is interested in learning and growing as a piano player.

Despite taking traditional piano lessons for 10 years, I still lacked a creative aspect in my performing. Sure, I could play almost any sheet music placed in front of me, but if someone asked me to improvise on a chord in a certain key signature I was completely clueless. I didn't know how to add my own flare to a piece - even though I desperately wanted to do so. I then found Treyan Porter online and read about his teaching method. I was so excited to find someone that taught this way because it was exactly what I was looking for. I contacted Treyan and was delighted when he offered to do a free introductory lesson with me to verify that he was a good fit for me. I have now been his student for over 2 months and have already learned a great deal about improvisation, arranging, and music theory. Even though I have been playing the piano for almost 20 years, I still benefit from Treyan's teaching because it is unlike anything I have ever done before. Treyan has made playing the piano fun for me again and I can't thank him enough for that.
