Adam did a great job installing the hose bib. He used the best drill bit to get through my stucco, I was concerned it would rip it up. But he made a smooth shot through it. When he had finished the project I ask him if he ever gets nervous about leaks, and he said “not when I do the work”. I loved his confidence. Great work Adam. I’d have you back to finish the rest of my basement.

Nate did a great job handling a sink install that turned out to be more complicated that originally thought. He made sure it was down right before he gave up, and had a really positive attitude about it the whole time. At the end of it all, the price was very fair for the amount of extra work he had to put in. I’d highly recommend him for future plumbing work!

I have had Ashley fix 2 items in my home. A hose bib and a valve for our swamp cooler. He came same day and completed the jobs quickly and efficiently. Very professional and fair. Used him twice and it is sufficient to say I will call him again with any plumbing issues.

Terry responded within a half hour of when I posted my request. He was able to come by and give me a bid the same day. He worked his schedule so he could be here at the same time my construction worker was here the following day . He did a great job on a challenging project! If I have plumbing issues again I will certainly use him. I recommend him highly! JY

Our water heater went out and thumbtack referred us to Murray Plumbing, and he called us right away. We told him the situation and he gave us his best quote over the phone. We contacted same day and Home Depot and their bids were hundreds of dollars more, so we went with Murray. We had already been without hot water for 2 days, and Matt went out of his way to work late and came the same day. We found him to be pleasant, helpful, honest and fair. He did a great job. I would definitely use him again, and recommend him to friends and family.

When we hired Jason at Building Pros, we only intended him to complete some drywall repairs we needed done in a rental unit. However, as additional needs arose, we soon discovered Jason to be skilled in many different areas and had him complete not only the drywall repair, but door frame replacement, baseboard removal and installation, window repair, hvac assessment, plumbing repairs and several other miscellaneous jobs we needed done. Jason and his team have been incredibly efficient and professional and we look forward to maintaining a long term working relationship with Building Pros.

Kore investments recently did a major remodel in my kitchen, removing a wall, moving electrical and plumbing, installing new cabinets, etc. They did excellent work and everyone that was in my home was extremely professional and conscientious. I would recommend them to anyone. Everything turned out beautifully and we love our new kitchen.

Steve helped us with a couple of small fixes/projects. The first time he came to the house I was out of town and my wife was dealing with a fussy baby. We asked him to come back and he happily did. Charged us for 3 hours of work in total, and he probably spent more time than that. He couldn’t fix a plumbing issue we are having but was honest about it and didn’t try charging us for work he couldn’t do. We will use him Steve again.

DM handyman services is now the only handyman I will ever have do work for me. I've been burned by handymen before. My plumbing froze and burst over this last winter. While I already had a plumber, I had no clue who to call about the insulation and drywall. A dear friend of mine suggested Dave and said he was the best. I called him, and he informed me he was currently wrapping up two other projects at the moment, but could come out in a week. I was in no hurry since the space was empty and the plumber had not completed his work yet. A week later he showed up and gave me a bid SO fair that it felt like I had a friend giving me the buddy discount. He got right to work and took no time at all getting the insulation installed. He then informed me that it would be best to wait for warmer temperatures to install and finish the drywall. This is where I thought I was going to get hosed. To my surpise, the FIRST day it got warm he was on the phone with me saying it'd be a good time to fish the job. Once the drywall was in and he finished painting it, I couldn't even tell the damage had happened. He's a master of his trades. If he says you'll need to wait for his availability, WAIT. If he tells you its going to be a bit more than he bid you, PAY IT. He's worth the wait and every penny!

About

Most companies throughout Utah hire individuals with little to no plumbing experience. Once they have been hired, they are “trained” for a few weekends to become what their employer calls a “certified technician”. With this label, it is easily conveyed to you the customer, that you are hiring someone with an extreme knowledge and education of the plumbing industry. What it boils down too, is that instead of getting a licensed plumber, you end up with a “certified technician” who has a masters in sales! When you call Keeping It Green, or any reputable plumbing company, you will get nothing less than a licensed plumber with a minimum of 4 years State recognized schooling and 3500 on the job training hours. Here at Keeping It Green we strive to hire only the best plumbers around. Doing so, we search for State recognized Master Plumbers. A Master Plumber has a minimum of eight years of schooling and on the job training! We will NEVER, never push any sales tactics or scare tactics to make “Sales”! Our plumbers are paid by the hour, NOT by commission. By paying our plumbers by the hour and not by commission, as well as making sure they are completely educated, we can bring a sense of ease to all of our customers. We guarantee 100% satisfaction and we are confident that the services we provide will be informative and professional. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
