We have used Ted for two different jobs in the past. The first was to repair our Furnace motor. He responded quickly and was able to find the part he needed the same day. Because of this experience we had him return and help us install a new kitchen sink and reinstall our dishwasher after a remodel. While here we asked him to look at a clogged sink which he did. It turned out that the p-trap was cracked and so he replaced the whole drain pipe and replaced an old faucet all within the same day.

He walked me through a test of the furnace's components to let me know whether I should replace the furnace itself or only a part. It was only the part that needed replacing. He was efficient and professional the whole time.

Boyd was a pleasure to work with! He was quick to respond even during the off hours. I'd been helping out a friend who didn't know about Thumbtack and had his furnace breakdown. The good news is that my friend was able to fix his own furnace this morning! He found a broken circuit on the electrical board of his furnace and with a soldering iron was able to fix it. The bad news was that we didn't get to have Boyd come help us on this project. Of the five quotes that I received, Boyd's was one of the best. I had one at $39 ($99 for off-hours emergency), Boyd's and one other at $49, one at $59, and one at $79. Before my friend fixed the problem, I had decided to go with Boyd at Rapid Response Heating and Air for three reasons: 1. He was quick to respond and very responsive to my questions on Thumbtack. 2. Almost everyone of their 50 reviews were very positive and they had the most of those positive reviews of the five companies who responded. 3. They were one of the best prices quoted at $49 for the visit and labor. I definitely know where to go the next time I have a heating or air problem!

We had a great experience with Expert Plumbing, Heating, and Air. They were very communicative about our scheduled appointment - you get confirmation emails and texts beforehand and when they are on their way. They were able to install a new hose bibb on the back of our house for us that was well done and done quickly. Our technician, Allen, was super friendly and respectful - would hire again.

Zach was really easy to work with. He was quick to respond and quick to get out to my home to inspect the furnace. He worked quickly and efficiently and charge a very fair price for his work. Hire Zach for your projects, not only does he do a great job but he's polite and honest.

He came within about an hour and got right to work on diagnosing the problem with our furnace. I especially appreciate that he took the time to explain more than once the problem with our furnace. He's knowledgeable, clean-cut, reasonably priced and pleasant!

I had a major water leak. Matt had to dig out the pipe, repair and replace it. It was cold, wet, and snowing, but he took care of it for me. I was very pleased with the job. I'm sorry that I haven't given him the review before this.

Overall a great experience. Stuck to timeline for the work, excellent communication and responsiveness. Felt that the work was a solid value. Excited about our new furnace and AC unit and when we replace our other unit next year, we will use Daniel's Den. Will recommend to others.

Troy came for a free quote the day we called him for a new furnace. He even offered to do the install that same night! We had him come the next morning, and he arrived early. He and his team were incredibly efficient, did the entire job in about 3 hours! Very impressed! Will be calling him when we need our AC replaced.

We couldn't be more pleased with the work Julian did. Attention to detail above and beyond what was expected at an amazing price. He has the experience and professionalism that you want when hiring someone to work on your home. He took the time to figure out exactly what equipment would work best within our budget and listed carefully to what we wanted. We have hired multiple contractors during our 3 year remodel, and Julian is by far the best! High quality work and excellent customer service that you don't come across often. Highly recommended. Work done: New furnace, AC coil and condenser. New duct runs to basement rooms and replacement of flexible ducts to main floor with rigid sealed runs.

I’m really happy with the work from josh with quantum hvac, he retrofit a furnace, coil, and new water heater in my home. Josh informed me we had to cut a hole in the drywall But he was quick to call and have the hole patched. As well he stayed late to finish to make sure me and my family were comfortable.

We needed repair on our kitchen sink, garbage disposal, and two bathrooms. He was on time and he was very professional while he was in our home. He cleaned up after himself and also left things the way they were underneath the sink after he left. He was very friendly and very efficient and wanted to take care of our problems right away. You could see that he was sincere and that he cared.

Wayne and his crew were fantastic! He got me in really quick. He beat the competitors prices. His tech guy was very nice and helpful. He gave me a bid and stuck to it. Didn't try to sale me on anything else. He even left me with some extra filters for my furnace. They did a good job of protecting my floors and cleaning up after themselves. I would absolutely recommend them and use them again. It was a great experience! Especially after the other companies I have tried to work with that were awful.

Brett responded quickly to my inquiry and when he came out to do a bid I didn’t know exactly what I needed yet... He took the extra time to write up 3 completely separate bids so I would have all the information right in front of me. We ended up going with a new furnace/AC and lots of extra ducting. He kept me informed the entire time of what was happening, options of upgrades (but never pressured an “upsale”) and when the project would be completed. We were so happy, we’ve already had Brett back out to bid a new gas insert fireplace! Thx Brett and Total Air Solutions!!

We highly recommend Essential, (Andrew) for repair and service of a Home heating system. He assessed the problem quickly, after listening to our story of what had happened. He had it repaired in less than 30 minutes. He charged us a fair and reasonable price. We will use him again. We will recommend him to close friends and family. Thank you Andrew for your competence, honesty, and fairness.

I was a little skeptical with the pricing at first. It seemed almost too good to be true. Chris came in 2k less in some cases 4k. Fact of the matter is Hvac companies are making a killing. I found the parts online for 3k and these other companies wanted to charge me 6-9k for parts and labor. So we are talking about a ton of profit for a day's worth of work. I took a chance on Chris knowing it could be too good to be true. Well it was the best deal I've ever taken. Chris and his team came out and within 6 hours they installed a new furnace, AC unit, and lines. They were all very professional and always answered any questions or concerns I had. It's nice knowing that o have a got to Hvac guy now that charges a very very very fair price.I love my new setup!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
